Exploring the Enchanting Pelion: A Greek Adventure with My Spouse
Day 11: A Day of Serenity and Art in Coastal Pelion
Discover the tranquil beauty of Limnionas Beach, the peaceful Sycamore Square, and unique art in Pelion on an unforgettable day trip.
Coastal Calm and Artistic Charms
Today was a day of simple pleasures, a gentle exploration of Pelion’s quieter corners. Lena and I set out with no grand agenda, just a desire to soak in the natural beauty and local culture. It's amazing how much you can discover when you let the day unfold organically.
Our morning started with a delightful breakfast at To Katofli tis Ketis. This charming spot is tucked away and offered a truly authentic Greek experience. We enjoyed fresh bread, local honey, and strong Greek coffee, all while overlooking the rolling hills. It was the perfect way to fuel up for our day of exploration. The owner was incredibly welcoming, making us feel like we were part of the family. It reminded me of the small family-run cafes back in Havlíčkův Brod, where everyone knows each other and the coffee is always served with a smile.
After breakfast, we headed to Limnionas Beach. The drive itself was an adventure, with winding roads offering stunning views of the coastline. When we arrived, we were greeted by crystal-clear waters and a serene atmosphere. The beach is a mix of sand and pebbles, with interesting rock formations dotting the landscape. It felt secluded and peaceful, a world away from the busier beaches we had visited earlier in our trip. We spent a few hours swimming, sunbathing, and simply enjoying the tranquility. Lena, ever the artist, was captivated by the play of light on the water and spent some time sketching in her notebook. I, on the other hand, enjoyed simply relaxing and listening to the gentle lapping of the waves. It was the perfect way to unwind and recharge.

The best view comes after the hardest climb.
Leaving the beach, we drove to the Sycamore of Peace Square. This square, located in Makrinitsa, is known for its ancient sycamore tree, which provides shade and a sense of tranquility. The village itself is incredibly picturesque, with traditional stone houses and cobblestone streets. We strolled around the square, taking in the sights and sounds of local life. There were a few small shops selling local crafts, and we enjoyed browsing the handmade items. Lena was particularly interested in the textiles, admiring the intricate patterns and vibrant colors. I was more drawn to the historical aspect of the square, imagining the generations of people who had gathered under the shade of the sycamore tree.

Before lunch, we decided to explore the Mediterraneo Art Store. This little shop was a treasure trove of handmade crafts and local art. We spent a good hour browsing the unique items, from ceramics to textiles, each piece telling a story of Pelion’s rich heritage. Lena found a beautiful hand-painted ceramic bowl that she absolutely loved, and I picked up a small wooden carving as a memento of our trip. Supporting local artisans is something we both feel strongly about, and it was a pleasure to find such unique and well-crafted items.

For lunch, we stopped at Sarande Beach Bar Restaurant. Located right on the beach, this restaurant offered stunning views of the Aegean Sea. We enjoyed fresh seafood and a refreshing Greek salad, savoring the flavors of the region. The atmosphere was relaxed and inviting, and the staff were friendly and attentive. It was the perfect spot to enjoy a leisurely lunch and soak in the beauty of the surroundings.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to the Salkimi tavern for dinner. This traditional tavern is known for its authentic Greek cuisine and warm hospitality. The restaurant is adorned with a huge wedge that covers it from spring to autumn. We indulged in local specialties and a glass of local wine, enjoying the cozy and inviting atmosphere. The owner, Antonis, greeted us with a warm smile and made us feel right at home. He shared stories about the history of the tavern and the local culture, adding to the overall experience. The food was delicious, and the portions were generous. It was the perfect way to end our day of exploration.

Tomorrow is our last day in Pelion, and we plan to make the most of it. Our itinerary includes a visit to the Home of Alexandros Papadiamantis and the Spring Of Manas. We’ll also be having breakfast at Akti, lunch at 1701 Wine Restaurant, and dinner at Meintani (Niki's Taverna). To cap off our trip, we'll visit the Alter Ego Rock & Blues Bar for a final taste of Greek nightlife. I’m already looking forward to it, but I’m also a little sad that our time here is coming to an end. Pelion has truly captured our hearts, and I know we’ll be back someday.
As I sit here reflecting on our day, I’m filled with a sense of gratitude. We’ve experienced so much beauty and kindness on this trip, and I’m so grateful to have shared it with Lena. These are the moments that make life so rich and meaningful. And as a software developer, it is refreshing to spend time away from my computer and enjoy nature.
