Volos: A Sunday Kind of Love
Today was all about embracing the vibrant city life of Volos, a change of pace from the serene villages of Pelion. After several days of mountain vistas and tranquil beaches, Lena and I were eager to immerse ourselves in the urban energy, explore its landmarks, and savor its culinary offerings. It was a day of simple pleasures, from leisurely park strolls to discovering hidden gems in the city's heart.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Mountain Top Cafe - Pelion. Perched high in Pelion, the cafe offered stunning panoramic views that stretched all the way to the sea. The fresh mountain air and the aroma of freshly brewed coffee was the perfect way to kickstart our day. I opted for a traditional Greek yogurt with honey and walnuts, while Lena chose a savory spinach pie. Fuelled up and ready for the day, we set off towards Volos.
Our first stop was Saint Konstantinos Park, a green oasis in the heart of the city. As we strolled through the park, we were immediately struck by the vibrant atmosphere. Families were picnicking on the lawns, children were playing by the water, and couples were enjoying leisurely walks along the shaded pathways. The park was alive with activity, a true reflection of the city's spirit.
The park itself is beautifully landscaped, with tall trees providing ample shade, colorful flower beds adding splashes of color, and serene pathways inviting exploration. We wandered along the waterfront, enjoying the sea breeze and the stunning views of the Pagasetic Gulf. It was the perfect spot to relax and soak in the city's ambiance.

The best part of any journey is discovering the unexpected joys in the simplest of moments.
Next on our list was the Clock Tower, a historical landmark that stands as a testament to Volos' rich past. As we approached the tower, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at its imposing presence. The tower has seen Volos grow and evolve around it. While I had hoped to learn more about the Clock Tower's history, details seemed surprisingly sparse. Nevertheless, standing in its shadow, I felt connected to the city's past, imagining the countless generations who had marked time by its face. I made a mental note to do some more digging later; I am sure there are fascinating stories hidden within the stones of this old tower.

For lunch, we headed to KRITSA Restaurant, enticed by its reputation for authentic Greek cuisine. Nestled in Portaria, the restaurant exuded a cozy and inviting atmosphere. We were lucky enough to snag a table under the shade of the gigantic plane trees, surrounded by an environment of unique natural beauty.
We started with a selection of traditional mezes, including tzatziki, dolmades, and fried zucchini flowers. Each dish was bursting with flavor, a testament to the freshness of the ingredients and the skill of the chef. For our main courses, I opted for the lamb souvlaki, while Lena chose the moussaka. Both dishes were cooked to perfection, showcasing the best of Greek cuisine. The service was friendly and attentive, making us feel right at home.

As the sun began to set, we decided to experience Volos' nightlife. We made our way to Grooove, a bar known for its sophisticated cocktails and vibrant atmosphere. The bar was buzzing with activity, a mix of locals and tourists all eager to enjoy a night out. The music was upbeat, the energy was infectious, and the cocktails were expertly crafted. Lena chose a classic margarita, while I decided to try one of their signature creations, a concoction of local spirits and fresh fruits. Sipping our drinks, we soaked in the lively ambiance, feeling like we were truly part of the city. Grooove definitely lived up to its reputation, offering a perfect blend of upscale cocktails, quality bites, and amazing music. It's no wonder it's considered one of the best bars in Volos.

Reflecting on the day, I realized how much I enjoyed experiencing the urban side of Pelion. While the mountain villages and beaches have their own unique charm, Volos offers a different kind of appeal. It's a city that seamlessly blends history and modernity, offering a vibrant cultural scene, delicious cuisine, and a lively nightlife. It was a day of simple pleasures, a reminder that sometimes the best travel experiences are the ones where you simply wander, explore, and soak in the local atmosphere.
Tomorrow, we’re off to explore more of Pelion’s coastal beauty, with Limnionas Beach and the Sycamore of peace square on the itinerary. I am looking forward to more sun, sea, and discovering hidden gems along the way. Until then, good night from Volos!
As I sit here, penning down our day’s adventures, Lena is already fast asleep, dreaming of the sandy shores awaiting us tomorrow. I, however, am wide awake, still buzzing from the city’s energy and the delightful cocktails at Grooove. Perhaps a bit more research on Volos' Clock Tower is in order before I turn in. After all, a curious mind never rests!
