A Day of Discovery in Visby

Today was a day of contrasts, venturing both deep underground and strolling through the sunlit streets of Visby. Lena and I explored the natural wonders of Lummelunda Cave, wandered through the picturesque Fiskargränd, and savored the local flavors at some fantastic restaurants. It's amazing how much history and beauty can be packed into a single day in this medieval city.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Plaza Restaurant & Pub. I opted for a classic Swedish breakfast, while Lena enjoyed a continental selection. The Plaza Restaurant & Pub offered a varied selection from Italian, French and Swedish cuisines. Fueled up, we set off towards Lummelunda Cave, a short drive north of Visby. I had double-checked that I had my camera - I would never forgive myself if I forgot it. It was a beautiful morning, with the sun casting long shadows across the Gotland landscape. The drive itself was pleasant, offering glimpses of the island's natural beauty. The landscape was mostly flat, as I noticed while driving.

Arriving at Lummelunda Cave, we were immediately struck by the lush greenery surrounding the entrance. The area felt like a natural oasis, a stark contrast to the rocky depths that awaited us. We joined a guided tour, eager to explore this geological marvel. Descending into the cave, the temperature dropped noticeably, a welcome change from the warm May sunshine. The air grew heavy with moisture, and the scent of damp earth filled our nostrils.

The cave itself was breathtaking. Stalactites and stalagmites adorned the chambers, creating otherworldly formations that have taken millennia to develop. The guide explained the cave's history, from its formation to its discovery in the 20th century. I was particularly fascinated by the 'Crystal Room' and the 'Great Hall', each showcasing unique geological features. Lena was captivated by the delicate beauty of the formations, her eyes wide with wonder. I captured as many photos as I could, trying to convey the sheer scale and beauty of the cave. It's hard to believe that such a hidden world exists beneath the surface of this island. We learned that the cave is not only a geological wonder but also hosts diverse ecosystems, which makes it even more fascinating.

Exploring Lummelunda Cave was like stepping into another world, a hidden realm of natural artistry sculpted over millennia.

Emerging from the cave, blinking in the sunlight, we felt like we had journeyed to another planet and back. It was time for lunch, and we headed back towards Visby, our appetites whetted by our subterranean adventure. We decided to try Bolaget i Visby AB, a restaurant known for its modern Swedish cuisine. The place was bustling, but we managed to snag a table with a view of the main square. I ordered a traditional Gotland dish, while Lena opted for a seafood salad. The food was delicious, fresh, and beautifully presented. Bolaget i Visby AB has a convenient location, making it easy to find.

After lunch, we strolled through Visby Harbour, soaking in the maritime atmosphere. The harbor was alive with activity, boats bobbing gently in the water, seagulls crying overhead, and tourists milling about, enjoying the pleasant weather. We watched as ferries arrived and departed, connecting Visby to the mainland. I imagined the countless journeys that had begun and ended in this historic harbor over the centuries. We walked along the pier, enjoying the sea breeze and the panoramic views of the city.

Next on our itinerary was Fiskargränd, Visby's most photographed street. This narrow cobblestone lane is famous for its climbing roses and charming medieval buildings. As we entered Fiskargränd, we were immediately transported back in time. The air was fragrant with the scent of roses, and the colorful blooms cascaded down the walls of the ancient houses. It was easy to see why this street is a favorite subject for postcards and photographs. I snapped dozens of pictures, trying to capture the unique beauty of this hidden gem. Lena and I walked hand in hand, marveling at the picturesque scene. This area has been called Fish root since the 1600s.

After our stroll, we decided to do some shopping. We stopped by Makalös design, a local shop known for its unique, locally crafted items. I was looking for a special souvenir to take back to Berlin, something that would remind me of our time in Visby. Makalös Design had a great selection of locally crafted items. I finally settled on a beautiful hand-painted ceramic plate, while Lena found a delicate silver necklace. It's nice to support local artisans and take home a piece of Gotland's culture.

As evening approached, we made our way to Familjen Jessens Saluhall & bar for dinner. This restaurant and delicatessen is known for its high-quality local produce and traditional Swedish dishes. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, and the aroma of delicious food filled the air. We started with a selection of Swedish cheeses and cured meats, followed by a hearty main course of lamb and potatoes. The meal was a true culinary delight, showcasing the best of Gotland's flavors.

To cap off the evening, we visited Bryggeriet Mat & Malt, a local brewery and restaurant. I was eager to sample some of Gotland's craft beers, and this place came highly recommended. The brewery shared a building with Barlingbo Bryggeri. The atmosphere was lively and convivial, with locals and tourists mingling and enjoying the local brews. I tried a flight of different beers, each with its unique flavor and character. Lena, who isn't as fond of beer as I am, opted for a glass of local cider. We chatted with some of the locals, learning more about Gotland's history and culture. I particularly enjoyed the Galgbacken IPA.

As we walked back to Hotell Repet, the streets of Visby were quiet and peaceful. The medieval buildings were bathed in the soft glow of streetlights, creating a magical atmosphere. I felt a deep sense of contentment, reflecting on the day's adventures. Visby had truly captured my heart with its unique blend of history, natural beauty, and culinary delights. Tomorrow, we plan to explore Galgberget, S:ta Karin ruin and St Görans Ruin. I'm looking forward to uncovering more of Visby's secrets and sharing them with you all. I am also looking forward to trying some new restaurants, such as Wisby Hof and Ocean House.

Today, Gotland Pride is ongoing, but we did not have time to check it out. We might check it out tomorrow, if we have the time.

What a day! I am looking forward to sharing more of my adventures with you all!
