Echoes of History

Today in Visby felt like stepping back in time. The air was filled with whispers of centuries past as Lena and I explored the ancient ruins and historical sites that dot this fascinating island. It's amazing how much history is packed into this relatively small area. Each stone seems to have a story to tell, and I found myself completely engrossed in trying to decipher them.

Our day began, as it often does, with a hearty breakfast. Wisby Hof was the perfect spot, filling us up before a day of exploring. The breakfast was simple, but satisfying, and set us up perfectly for the adventures ahead.

Our first stop was Galgberget, the Gallows Hill. It’s a rather somber place, but incredibly interesting. The stone pillars of the gallows still stand, a stark reminder of the justice meted out here centuries ago. It’s hard to imagine such a brutal site now serving as a peaceful nature spot, but that's exactly what it is. Standing there, I couldn’t help but reflect on how different life must have been back then. The views from the hill were impressive, offering a panoramic vista of Visby and the sea. It was easy to see why this location was chosen; it would have been visible to all, serving as a grim warning. Lena and I spent some time wandering around, reading the information boards, and trying to imagine what it must have been like to witness an execution here. I found it particularly chilling to learn that archaeological excavations had revealed the remains of around 30 people near the gallows. Some were even buried in coffins, suggesting that not only common criminals met their end here, but also members of the upper class.

History is not a burden on the memory but an illumination of the soul.

From Galgberget, we made our way to the ruins of S:ta Karin. This Franciscan monastery, founded in 1233, is now a skeletal silhouette against the sky. The arches and walls still reach upwards, hinting at the grandeur it once possessed. It was fascinating to wander through the remains, imagining the lives of the monks who once lived and worshipped here. The intricate details in the stonework were still visible, showcasing the skill of the medieval craftsmen. Lena was particularly taken with the way the sunlight streamed through the empty window frames, creating an ethereal atmosphere. We learned that the church had many patron saints, including St. Catherine of Alexandria, St. Mary Magdalene, St. Francis, and St. Anthony. The fact that a relic of St. Mary Magdalene was found in the high altar added an extra layer of intrigue to the site.

Next on our list was St Görans Ruin, located just outside the city walls. This church was originally part of a leper hospital, a somber reminder of the diseases that plagued medieval society. The isolation of the church and hospital outside the city walls speaks volumes about the fear and stigma associated with leprosy. It was a simple, unadorned structure, reflecting its function as a place of solace for those suffering from a terrible illness. Standing there, I felt a deep sense of empathy for the people who sought refuge within its walls. We discovered that the church was built on the site of an older church dating back to the 1100s, highlighting the long history of this location as a place of worship.

For lunch, we decided to try Ocean House, drawn in by its seafood offerings. The reviews were a bit mixed, but we were hoping for the best. Unfortunately, our experience was also a bit underwhelming. The food was decent, but the service didn’t quite meet our expectations. It was a bit disappointing, but we didn’t let it dampen our spirits. There are so many other restaurants to try in Visby, and we were determined to find some real gems.

In the afternoon, Lena wanted to do some shopping, so we headed to Nordic Jewelry Design. She had read about their handmade jewelry, inspired by the Sami culture of northern Sweden, and was eager to see it for herself. The shop was small and cozy, filled with beautiful bracelets, necklaces, and earrings. Lena spent ages browsing, admiring the intricate designs and the quality of the craftsmanship. She ended up buying a delicate silver bracelet with a reindeer leather strap, a perfect reminder of our trip to Sweden. I was fascinated to learn that the founder of the company, Ewa Roslin, still makes each piece by hand, using materials sourced from Lapland. It’s wonderful to see such dedication to traditional craftsmanship in a world of mass-produced goods.

Before dinner, we stopped by Joda bar & kök for a drink. This bar was near the harbor, and had a great atmosphere. We sat outside, enjoying the view of the boats and the lively chatter of the other patrons. I tried a local beer, while Lena had a cocktail. It was the perfect way to unwind after a busy day of sightseeing. I noticed they had a diverse menu with options to dine outside, inside, or in the inner garden.

For dinner, we had made a reservation at Lilla Bjers Krog, a farm-to-table restaurant located just outside Visby. This place came highly recommended, and we were excited to try it. The restaurant is situated on an organic farm, and the menu features vegetables and fruits grown on the property. The chef, Jonathan Kasche, sources the remaining ingredients from other organic farms on Gotland, ensuring that everything is fresh, local, and sustainable. The atmosphere was relaxed and rustic, with a greenhouse dining area filled with plants and flowers. We ordered the tasting menu, which allowed us to sample a variety of dishes. Each course was a work of art, beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. My favorite was the lamb with variations of carrot – baked, pureed, and pickled. The homemade juice pairings were also excellent, complementing the food perfectly. Lilla Bjers Krog was definitely a highlight of our culinary experiences in Visby. It reminded me a bit of the sustainable practices we try to implement back home in Berlin, reinforcing my belief in the importance of supporting local and organic agriculture.

As the sun began to set, we strolled back to Hotell Repet, our cozy home away from home. The sky was ablaze with color, casting a golden glow over the medieval walls of Visby. It was the perfect end to a perfect day. Reflecting on our adventures, I realized how much Visby has to offer. From its somber gallows to its stunning church ruins and vibrant culinary scene, this town is a treasure trove of history and culture. I am already looking forward to tomorrow, when we plan to explore the DBW's Botanical Garden, Drottens ruin, and Södra hällarna. I'm also intrigued by the prospect of visiting the Sunny Side Up Beach Store and the Hop Shed Brew Pub. It seems there is always something new to discover in this enchanting place.
