Island Waterfalls and Aromatic Discoveries

Today was a day of embracing the natural beauty and unique scents of Yakushima. After spending so much time in structured environments, the freedom of solo travel really hit home as I explored cascading waterfalls and local craftsmanship. The island's blend of wild landscapes and thoughtful artistry offered a refreshing change of pace, reminding me why I needed this escape in the first place.

My morning began with a hearty breakfast at Smiley. The simple, comforting meal of grilled fish and rice set a positive tone for the day. Fuelling up was essential, knowing I’d be spending the day exploring Yakushima's famed waterfalls. The weather in Yakushima in July is warm and humid, with temperatures around 29°C, and the chance of rain is relatively high. I made sure to pack my rain gear, just in case.

First on the itinerary was Ohko Waterfall, one of Japan's top 100 waterfalls. The drive there was stunning, with lush greenery on both sides of the road. As I approached, the sound of the cascading water grew louder, building anticipation. The parking lot was conveniently located near the waterfall, and a short walk brought me to the viewing area. The sight of Ohko Waterfall was truly breathtaking. The water plunged 88 meters down a cliff, creating a powerful and mesmerizing display. The mist from the falls cooled the air, providing a welcome respite from the humidity. I spent a good while simply watching the water, feeling the energy of nature.

The best view comes after the hardest climb.

Next, I headed to Senpiro Falls. This waterfall is known for its unique granite rock formation, said to resemble a thousand people holding hands. The valley leading to Senpiro Falls was impressive, with steep cliffs and dense vegetation. The waterfall itself, cascading down the granite face, was a sight to behold. I took some photos, trying to capture the scale of the natural architecture, but as always, pictures don't quite do it justice. I read somewhere that Senpiro Falls is especially awe-inspiring after heavy rainfall, so I felt lucky to see it in full flow.

Before heading to my final waterfall destination, I stopped for lunch at Kamogawa Restaurant. I enjoyed a delicious bowl of ramen, savoring the local flavors. It's these small culinary experiences that add so much to a trip, providing a taste of the local culture.

My last stop for the day was Yakushima-todai Lighthouse. Perched on the coast, it offered panoramic views of the ocean. The lighthouse itself was striking, a white tower against the blue backdrop. I learned that it has been protecting maritime safety since 1897. Although I couldn't go inside, standing there, feeling the sea breeze, and looking out at the vast expanse of the Pacific was a great experience. The sun was beginning to set, casting a warm glow over the landscape. It was a perfect moment of solitude and reflection.

After a day of chasing waterfalls and coastal views, I decided to indulge in a unique sensory experience at YAWARACA “The Scent of Yakushima LAB”. This shop specializes in aromatic products made from local Yakushima cedar. As someone who appreciates sustainable living, I was intrigued by their approach to forest management. I learned that YAWARACA thins neglected reforestation areas to extract essential oils, contributing to a healthier forest ecosystem. The shop itself was a haven of calming scents. I sampled various essential oils, each with its distinct fragrance. I ended up purchasing a small bottle of their signature blend, “Shima-no-Kioku” (Island Memory), hoping to bring a piece of Yakushima's tranquility back home to Berlin. It reminded me a bit of the forests around Havlíčkův Brod, where I spent so much of my childhood.

For dinner, I chose Wakadaisho, a local restaurant known for its fresh seafood. I opted for a grilled fish dish, wanting to taste the local catch. The fish was cooked perfectly, and the meal was a satisfying end to a day filled with natural wonders and aromatic discoveries.

As I reflect on today, I'm struck by the diversity of Yakushima’s offerings. From the awe-inspiring waterfalls to the calming scents of cedar, the island engages all the senses. It's a place where nature and culture intertwine, creating a truly unique experience. I’m looking forward to tomorrow’s adventures, which include a visit to the Kurio River View and the ancient Kigensugi Cedar. I might even check out Ambar bar in the evening, if I’m feeling up to it. For now, I'll drift off to sleep, dreaming of waterfalls and fragrant forests. I'm also glad I didn't forget my camera and hiking boots, even though I did forget my portable phone charger and lightweight backpack. It's a good thing I remembered to pack my rain gear, though.

Yakushima continues to surprise and inspire, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
