A Forest Awakening

After a long journey from Berlin, via Tokyo and Kagoshima, I've finally arrived in Yakushima. The air here is thick with humidity and the scent of cedar, a stark contrast to the dry summer heat I left behind. As a software developer who moonlights as a travel blogger, I'm always seeking new perspectives, and I have a strong feeling that Yakushima will deliver just that. My first day was a deep dive into the island's natural and cultural heart, a promise of the adventures yet to come.

My day began, rather unexpectedly, at the Yakushima Airport Restaurant. After a slightly delayed flight from Kagoshima, grabbing breakfast here was more a matter of convenience than choice, but it turned out to be a pleasant introduction to local flavors. It had a charming, old-school vibe, reminiscent of traditional soba shops. I purchased a meal ticket at the counter and enjoyed a simple yet satisfying set meal of grilled fish, rice, and miso soup.

Fueled up, I headed to the Yakushima World Heritage Conservation Center. As someone deeply interested in sustainable living, I wanted to understand the island's unique ecosystem and the efforts to preserve it. The center provided a wealth of information about Yakushima's flora and fauna, including exhibits on the island's diverse wildlife and a 3D map of the national park terrain. I learned about the vertical distribution of plant species depending on altitude, which was fascinating. I found myself particularly drawn to the photography exhibit showcasing the island's seasonal beauty, a reminder of what I hope to capture through my own lens during this trip.

The best view comes after the hardest climb.
Next on the itinerary was Yakusugi Land, a majestic nature park famed for its ancient cedar trees. The park offered a variety of hiking trails, and I chose a moderate one that allowed me to immerse myself in the forest without overexerting myself on the first day. The towering yakusugi were truly awe-inspiring, their gnarled trunks telling stories of centuries gone by. Sunlight filtered through the canopy, creating an ethereal glow on the moss-covered forest floor. I paused frequently, camera in hand, attempting to capture the grandeur of these ancient giants. I was particularly struck by the Buddhasugi, its form vaguely resembling a meditating Buddha, and the Sennensugi, estimated to be over 1,000 years old. It was easy to lose myself in the tranquility of the forest, a welcome escape from the digital world I usually inhabit.

Leaving Yakusugi Land, I ventured towards Shiratani Unsui Gorge, a location that's said to have inspired the Studio Ghibli film *Princess Mononoke*. As a fan of the film, I was eager to see the moss-covered forests and pristine streams for myself. The gorge was even more enchanting than I had imagined. The air was cool and damp, and the sound of rushing water filled the air. I hiked along the well-maintained trails, marveling at the vibrant green moss that carpeted every surface. It felt like stepping into another world, a place of magic and wonder. I spent a long time simply sitting by the stream, listening to the water and soaking in the atmosphere. The play of light and shadow through the trees was mesmerizing, and I felt a deep sense of peace and connection with nature.

Before dinner, I decided to explore the Yakushima Market. I wanted to get a sense of the local crafts and produce. The market was bustling with activity, locals selling everything from fresh fruits and vegetables to handmade souvenirs. I picked up a few small items, including a locally made cedar wood carving and some *ponkan* citrus fruits, a Yakushima specialty. It was a great opportunity to support local artisans and sample some of the island's unique flavors.

For dinner, I treated myself to a meal at At Pesca. I had heard about its unique approach to seafood. It's not a traditional restaurant; instead, it's designed as a fish market where you select your own fish and side dishes. The selection changes daily based on what's fresh and available. I chose a grilled snapper with a side of local vegetables, and it was absolutely delicious. The fish was perfectly cooked, and the vegetables were bursting with flavor. It was a fitting end to a day of exploring Yakushima's natural bounty.

As I reflect on my first day in Yakushima, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude and excitement. The island has already exceeded my expectations, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings. I'm particularly looking forward to hiking to Jōmon Sugi, the island's oldest and most revered cedar tree. I've heard it's a challenging hike, but I'm determined to make it. I also plan to visit Wilson's Stump, another iconic landmark. Before that though, I'll make sure to grab a hearty breakfast at Aqua Cafe. I've heard great things about their breakfast menu, and I'll need the energy for the day's adventures.

I'm also intrigued by Cafe&Bar RainTree, which I plan to visit in the evening. It sounds like a great place to unwind after a long day of hiking and perhaps meet some locals or fellow travelers. It's these little moments of connection that often make a trip truly memorable. Tonight, though, I'll rest up and prepare for another day of exploration in this magical island.

I'm also reminded of Lena, who would have loved to see the craft shops here. I'll have to pick up a few things for her before I leave. It's moments like these I miss having her by my side.

As I sit here in my guesthouse, the sounds of the forest lulling me to sleep, I know that this trip to Yakushima will be one for the books. It's a place where nature reigns supreme, and where you can truly disconnect from the stresses of modern life. I'm eager to share my experiences with you, and I hope that my blog will inspire you to explore this incredible island for yourself. Until tomorrow, *sayōnara* from Yakushima!
