Vineyards and Views: A Day in the Douro Valley

Today was a day of pure immersion in the Douro Valley’s charm. From exploring a renowned Quinta to soaking in panoramic vistas, every moment felt like a postcard come to life. It’s amazing how a single day can encapsulate so much of what makes this region special – the history, the flavors, and of course, the stunning landscapes.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Veladouro in Pinhão. The restaurant is just by the docks, and it was the perfect way to start the day with a view. I enjoyed some fresh traditional food while Lena had a Caprese salad. The tomatoes were so fresh and flavorful, it reminded us of our little garden back in Berlin. I’m always looking for ways to incorporate more sustainable practices into our travels, and supporting local restaurants like Veladouro feels like a small but meaningful step.

After breakfast, we set off to Quinta do Tedo. The drive itself was an experience, winding through the narrow roads flanked by terraced vineyards. Arriving at the Quinta, we were immediately struck by its beauty. The estate is nestled in an ecological reserve, and the views were simply breathtaking. The vineyards sloped down to the river, creating a scene of tranquility and natural beauty. We decided to do the wine tour and tasting at Quinta do Tedo. It was amazing to learn about the history of the winery, and how they were among the first Porto producers to practice responsible and sustainable agricultural practices. We sampled a few of their wines, each with its own unique character and flavor profile. I particularly enjoyed their 20-year Tawny Port, with its rich notes of caramel and dried fruit. Lena, who usually prefers white wines, found herself captivated by the rosé Port.

The Douro Valley isn't just a place you see; it's a feeling you carry with you long after you've left.

One thing that struck me was the passion and dedication of the people working at Quinta do Tedo. They were so knowledgeable and enthusiastic about their craft, and it was clear that they truly cared about preserving the heritage of the Douro Valley. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful.

After the wine tasting, we decided to take a walk through the vineyards. It was a beautiful day, and the sun was shining down on the vines. We strolled along the certified walking trails, taking in the sights and sounds of the countryside. I tried to capture the beauty of the moment with my camera, but no photo could truly do it justice.

Next on our itinerary was the Miradouro da Foz do Tedo. After a short drive, we arrived at the viewpoint and were immediately rewarded with panoramic views of the Douro River and the surrounding vineyards. The vista was simply stunning, and we spent a few moments just taking it all in. I always appreciate finding these spots that offer a moment of peace and reflection, away from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Lena and I took some photos, trying to capture the scale and grandeur of the landscape. The Miradouro da Foz do Tedo really is a must-visit destination.

For lunch, we headed to Douro à Mesa in Peso da Régua. I was eager to try some authentic Portuguese cuisine, and this restaurant came highly recommended. The menu featured a variety of traditional dishes, and we decided to share a few different plates. We sampled some local pork dishes, and of course, some fresh seafood. Everything was delicious, and the portions were generous. It was the perfect way to refuel after a busy morning of exploring.

In the late afternoon, we decided to treat ourselves to a bit of relaxation. We headed back towards Pinhão and made our way to the Douro Sky Lounge. Perched atop the Vincci Porto Hotel, this rooftop bar offered stunning views of the river and the surrounding hills. We settled into some comfy lounge sofas and ordered a couple of cocktails. I opted for a classic gin and tonic, while Lena tried one of their signature sangrias. As we sipped our drinks, we watched the sun slowly sink below the horizon, painting the sky with vibrant colors. The Douro Sky Lounge had a vibrant atmosphere, with live music and a lively crowd.

As the evening approached, it was time for our final culinary experience of the day. We had made a reservation at São Luiz by Chef Vitor de Oliveira, located at Quinta de São Luiz. This restaurant promised a celebration of Portuguese cuisine, and it certainly delivered. The setting was elegant and refined, with a harmonious blend of modern design and traditional elements. Chef Vitor de Oliveira takes pride in using locally sourced ingredients to create dishes that reflect the flavors of the region. For dinner, I decided to try one of the chef’s signature dishes, the Bísaro pork, while Lena opted for the Celtic Rooster. Each dish was thoughtfully prepared and beautifully presented. The flavors were intense and complex, showcasing the rich culinary heritage of Portugal. The service was impeccable, and the staff went out of their way to make us feel welcome.

Chef Vitor de Oliveira clearly has a deep respect for the Douro’s gastronomic history. The atmosphere was comfortable, and the service was decent. It’s a place where the past and future memories of taste collide! The essence of the land is respected in an almost religious way. The intensity, the truth and the authenticity of the flavors are presented in an informal and organic way. The black iron pots are forgotten in the fire and the finest pieces of Celtic Rooster, Barrosã Beef, Bísaro Pork, Algarve Octopus and of Dry Salted Cod, of Charcuterie from Trás-os-Montes and Iberia, are all treated with the respect their origin and quality deserve!

Reflecting on today, I’m reminded of why Lena and I started this travel blog in the first place. It’s about sharing these incredible experiences with others, inspiring them to step outside their comfort zones and explore the world. And the Douro Valley, with its stunning landscapes, rich history, and delicious cuisine, is certainly a destination worth exploring.

Tomorrow marks the final day of our Douro Valley adventure. We plan to visit Quinta de Santa Marinha, another renowned winery, and Miradouro de Valença do Douro for one last panoramic view. We’ll also have breakfast at Cantina de Ventozelo, lunch at The River, and a farewell dinner at Val Moreira. Before heading to the airport on Sunday, we will swing by Time By Wine to find a little something to take back home to Berlin to remind us of this trip.

It's hard to believe our time here is coming to an end. This trip has been a wonderful blend of relaxation and adventure, and I'm so grateful to have shared it with Lena. As much as I enjoy my work as a software developer, these moments of escape and discovery are essential for recharging and gaining new perspectives. I am already looking forward to sharing our final day with you all.
