A Day of Discovery
Today was all about immersing ourselves even deeper into the heart of the Douro Valley. It's amazing how each day here brings new perspectives and experiences, solidifying why Lena and I chose this region for our summer escape. We prepared for a day filled with exploration, eager to uncover more of the Douro's hidden gems.
Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Terraçu's Restaurant. The restaurant, nestled within Quinta Nova, offered stunning views of the surrounding vineyards. I opted for a hearty Portuguese breakfast, complete with fresh bread, local cheese, and strong coffee to kickstart the day. Lena enjoyed a lighter meal of yogurt and fruit, savoring each bite while taking in the panoramic vistas. I was reminded of our mornings back in Berlin, but instead of the city's hustle and bustle, we were surrounded by the tranquility of the Douro Valley. I must admit, I felt a pang of guilt for forgetting my portable phone charger; capturing these views would have been easier with a fully charged phone.

After breakfast, we set off to Quinta do Vesúvio, a place I had been particularly excited about. The drive there was an adventure in itself, with winding roads offering breathtaking views at every turn. The Quinta do Vesúvio is known for its remoteness and traditional winemaking methods. The estate itself is impressive, a testament to the rich history and dedication that goes into producing their renowned Port wines.

We took a tour of the vineyards, learning about the unique terroir and the meticulous process of grape cultivation. The guide explained how the steep slopes and the hot, dry summers contribute to the distinctive character of their wines. It was fascinating to hear about the traditional methods still in use, such as foot-treading the grapes in lagares. I couldn't help but admire the blend of tradition and innovation that defines Quinta do Vesúvio.
Of course, the highlight of the visit was the wine tasting. We sampled a range of their Ports, each with its own unique flavor profile. From the rich, fruity Vintage Port to the smooth, nutty Tawny, each sip was a journey in itself. Lena, with her keen eye for detail, particularly enjoyed the complex aromas and the lingering finish of the Vintage Port. I found myself drawn to the Tawny, appreciating its smooth texture and nutty undertones. I made a mental note to find something similar back in Berlin, perhaps at one of the wine shops near our apartment.
The Douro Valley is more than just a wine region; it's a tapestry of history, culture, and breathtaking landscapes woven together by the art of winemaking.
Next on our itinerary was Quinta da Côrte. The drive from Vesúvio was equally scenic, offering different perspectives of the Douro's stunning landscapes. Quinta da Côrte presented a different, yet equally captivating, experience. This quinta is known for its modern approach to winemaking, blending traditional techniques with contemporary design. The architecture was stunning, a seamless integration of modern aesthetics with the rustic charm of the Douro Valley.

We explored the vineyards, which were meticulously maintained, showcasing a deep respect for the land. The tour guide shared insights into their sustainable practices, emphasizing their commitment to preserving the environment. It was inspiring to see how they balanced tradition with innovation, creating wines that reflect both the heritage and the future of the Douro Valley.
The wine tasting at Quinta da Côrte was a revelation. We sampled a selection of their wines, each showcasing the unique characteristics of the terroir. Lena appreciated the elegance and complexity of their red wines, while I was particularly impressed by their crisp, refreshing white wine. The tasting room itself was a work of art, with panoramic windows offering breathtaking views of the vineyards. It was the perfect setting to savor the flavors of the Douro Valley.
For lunch, we ventured to Figurino do Douro, a restaurant recommended by several locals. The restaurant offered a cozy and inviting atmosphere, with traditional Portuguese décor and a warm, welcoming staff. We started with a selection of petiscos, including local cheeses, cured meats, and olives. For the main course, Lena chose the grilled octopus, while I opted for the bacalhau à brás, a classic Portuguese dish made with salt cod, eggs, and potatoes. Both dishes were expertly prepared, showcasing the rich flavors of Portuguese cuisine.

In the late afternoon, we made our way to PORTOLOGIA - La Maison des Port, a shop dedicated to Port wine. Located in Peso da Régua, this charming shop offered an extensive selection of Ports from various producers in the region. We spent a delightful hour browsing the shelves, learning about the different styles and vintages of Port. The staff was incredibly knowledgeable, offering helpful recommendations and insights.

We purchased a few bottles to take back home, including a vintage Tawny for a special occasion and a ruby Port to enjoy with cheese. I imagined sharing these wines with friends back in Berlin, reminiscing about our adventures in the Douro Valley. Lena also picked up a few bottles as gifts for her family, eager to share the flavors of Portugal with them.
As the sun began to set, we headed to Tasca da Quinta for dinner. This charming restaurant, tucked away in a small street, offered a cozy and intimate atmosphere. The menu featured traditional Portuguese dishes, prepared with fresh, local ingredients. We started with a hearty soup, followed by the roasted pork belly and the grilled sardines. The food was simple, yet incredibly flavorful, showcasing the best of Portuguese cuisine.

We both agreed that the Douro Valley had exceeded our expectations, offering a perfect blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, and culinary delights.
As we savored our last sips of wine, we couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience this remarkable region. The Douro Valley had captured our hearts, leaving us with memories that we would cherish for years to come. I was glad that we decided to veer off the beaten path and explore this hidden gem of Portugal. Even though I missed capturing some moments due to my forgotten charger, the memories were etched in my mind.
Looking ahead to tomorrow, we're planning to visit Quinta do Tedo and Miradouro da Foz do Tedo, and perhaps enjoy a drink at Douro Sky Lounge. I'm particularly excited about Quinta do Tedo, as I've heard great things about their wines and the stunning views from their estate.
