Exploring the Depths of Phong Nha-Ke Bang

Today was a day of subterranean exploration and gastronomic adventures here in Phong Nha-Ke Bang. Lena and I set out to discover the wonders hidden beneath the surface, and indulge in the local flavors that this region has to offer. It's amazing how much natural beauty can be found both above and below ground.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Phong Nha Vegan Restaurant. As someone who appreciates sustainable living, I was excited to try a place that prides itself on using locally sourced ingredients. The restaurant itself was a cozy little spot, tucked away inside the owner's house, with fresh herbs decorating the space. We enjoyed a variety of Vietnamese dishes, including banana flower tempura and rice pancakes with seitan filling. It was a delightful start to the day, fueling us up for our cave expeditions.

First on our itinerary was the famous Phong Nha Cave. To get there, we hopped on a dragon boat, which took us on a scenic cruise along the Son River. The views were stunning, with limestone cliffs rising majestically from the water. It was a peaceful way to start our exploration, and I couldn't help but snap a few photos of the picturesque scenery. As we approached the cave entrance, I was struck by the sheer scale of the place. It's hard to believe that such a massive cavern lies hidden beneath the mountains. The boat took us deep into the cave, and we were immediately enveloped in darkness. The only light came from the lamps on our helmets, which illuminated the intricate stalactites and stalagmites that adorned the cave walls. It felt like entering another world, a subterranean cathedral sculpted by nature over millions of years. We disembarked from the boat to explore further on foot, marveling at the unique rock formations and the echoing silence of the cave.

After Phong Nha Cave, we made our way to Tien Son Cave, also known as the Heavenly Son Cave. To reach the entrance, we had to climb over 500 steps. It was a bit of a trek, but the panoramic views from the top were well worth the effort. Tien Son Cave is located a short distance from the main entrance of Phong Nha Cave. Unlike Phong Nha Cave, which is primarily a water cave, Tien Son is a dry cave that can be explored on foot. Inside, we were greeted by a dazzling display of stalactites and stalagmites, illuminated by the cave's lighting system. The formations were incredibly diverse, with some resembling mythical creatures and others forming intricate patterns on the walls. Lena and I spent a good hour wandering through the cave, taking photos and marveling at the natural artistry. The cave has a clear geological stratification formed over millions of years.

By lunchtime, we were both feeling quite peckish, so we headed to The Rice House. This restaurant is known for its authentic Vietnamese dishes and commitment to using fresh, locally sourced ingredients. We ordered a variety of dishes, including the tomato tofu and the eggplant clay pot, both of which were incredibly flavorful. The restaurant had a cozy and inviting atmosphere, and the staff were very friendly and attentive. It was the perfect place to relax and refuel after our morning of cave exploration.

In the late afternoon, after a short rest at our accommodation, Lena and I decided to explore the town a bit more. We stumbled upon King Kong Bar Phong Nha, a newly opened spot that seemed to be quite popular with both locals and tourists. The bar had a lively atmosphere, with music playing and people chatting and laughing. We ordered a couple of mixed drinks and settled in to enjoy the evening. It was a great way to unwind and soak in the local vibe. As the night wore on, we struck up conversations with some of the other patrons, sharing stories and travel tips. It's moments like these that make traveling so special – the chance to connect with people from different backgrounds and cultures.

For dinner, we decided to try Son Doong Restaurant, named after the famous Son Doong Cave. The restaurant had a wide variety of Vietnamese dishes on offer, and we decided to try a few local specialties. The food was delicious, and the portions were generous. It was a satisfying end to a day filled with exploration and adventure. We discussed the plans for tomorrow, when we will be visiting Hang Son Doong, the largest cave in the world. I am very excited to see what that entails. I’ve heard it requires swimming through underground rivers, exploring gigantic cave ceiling collapses and traversing through underground rainforests.
