Arrival in Phong Nha: A Promising Start
After a long journey from Berlin, with a layover in Hanoi and a connecting flight to Dong Hoi, Lena and I finally arrived in Phong Nha. The anticipation had been building for months, ever since we decided to explore this UNESCO World Heritage site. As a software developer, I usually spend my days immersed in lines of code, but now, I was ready to trade my keyboard for hiking boots and my monitor for breathtaking landscapes. Lena, always the artist, was eager to capture the beauty of Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park through her graphic designer's eye.

Our journey here was quite smooth, though I must admit, I nearly forgot the power adapter for Vietnamese outlets. Luckily, Lena reminded me just in time! We took a car from Dong Hoi to Phong Nha, and the scenery along the way was already captivating. The lush greenery and towering karst mountains hinted at the wonders that awaited us. The weather in November is quite pleasant. It's warm and breezy, perfect for exploring the outdoors.
Our first stop was The Villas Restaurant for breakfast. The ambiance was lovely, and the food was delicious. I had a traditional Vietnamese breakfast, while Lena opted for something more familiar. It was the perfect way to start our adventure.

After breakfast, we decided to take a stroll around the park area. The sheer scale of Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park is awe-inspiring. The karst formations are unlike anything I’ve ever seen, and the air is so fresh and clean. It's a welcome change from the hustle and bustle of Berlin. We spent the morning simply soaking in the atmosphere, taking photos, and planning our next few days.
For lunch, we chose the Lotus Restaurant. The food was excellent, and the prices were reasonable. I tried a local specialty, while Lena enjoyed a vegetarian dish. We both agreed that Vietnamese cuisine is incredibly flavorful and diverse.

To travel is to take a journey into yourself.
In the afternoon, we ventured deeper into the park, exploring some of the hiking trails. The trails were well-maintained, and the scenery was stunning. We saw a variety of plants and animals, including some monkeys playing in the trees. As someone who enjoys hiking in the Harz Mountains back in Germany, I felt right at home amidst nature.
As evening approached, we made our way to Son Doong Restaurant for dinner. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, and the staff were very friendly. I ordered a seafood dish, while Lena chose a vegetarian option. The food was delicious, and we both left feeling satisfied.

After dinner, we decided to check out the King Kong Bar. It was a lively spot with a good selection of drinks. I had a local beer, while Lena tried a cocktail. The atmosphere was fun and relaxed, and we enjoyed chatting with some of the other travelers.

One thing I've noticed is that, much like in Berlin, there's a real emphasis on sustainability here. Many restaurants and cafes are trying to reduce their plastic usage, which is something I greatly appreciate. It aligns perfectly with our interest in sustainable living.
Before heading back to our accommodation, we took a moment to reflect on our first day in Phong Nha. It had been a whirlwind of sights, sounds, and flavors, and we were both excited for what tomorrow would bring. We are planning to visit Phong Nha Cave and Tien Son Cave tomorrow.
I must admit, I felt a pang of guilt for not brushing up on my Vietnamese before arriving. Communication can be a bit challenging at times, but the locals are incredibly patient and helpful. Lena, with her artistic eye, has already started sketching some of the landscapes. She is eager to capture the unique beauty of this place.
As we settle in for the night, I can't help but feel grateful for this opportunity to explore such a beautiful and unique part of the world. Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park has already exceeded my expectations, and I can't wait to see what other adventures await us.
We are both looking forward to exploring Phong Nha Cave and Tien Son Cave tomorrow. I have heard they are absolutely stunning, and Lena is eager to capture their beauty through her photography.
I am also hoping to find some time to visit Phong Nha Collection tomorrow. Lena has been wanting to pick up some souvenirs, and I am sure we will find something unique there.
As I close this entry, I am filled with a sense of excitement and anticipation. Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park has already captured my heart, and I know that this is just the beginning of an unforgettable adventure.
Goodnight from Phong Nha!
P.S. I am making a mental note to buy some insect repellent tomorrow. The mosquitos here are quite persistent!
