Gion After Dark

Today was a day of wandering through the heart of Kyoto, a city that continues to captivate me with its blend of ancient traditions and modern life. I've always found that a place truly reveals itself when the sun dips below the horizon, and today was no exception. I decided to dedicate the day to Gion and its surrounding gems, and it turned out to be a wonderful experience that I’m eager to share.

My day began, as usual, with a hearty breakfast at Arash's Kitchen. I opted for a comforting plate of lentil stew and freshly baked naan. It's quickly becoming my favorite spot for a familiar taste that reminds me of home, even though it's thousands of kilometers away. Fuelled up and ready to explore, I set off towards Gion.

Gion, Kyoto's famed geisha district, was first on my list. As I strolled through its narrow, lantern-lit streets, I felt like I had stepped back in time. The preserved wooden machiya houses exuded an old-world charm, and I couldn't help but imagine the stories these walls could tell. The area was bustling with activity, yet there was a sense of serene elegance that permeated the air. I kept my eyes peeled, hoping to catch a glimpse of a geiko or maiko gracefully making their way to an appointment, but alas, no such luck this time. Perhaps tomorrow!

The beauty of Kyoto lies not just in its temples and gardens, but in the way it seamlessly blends the past with the present.

Next, I made my way to Yasaka Shrine, a vibrant Shinto shrine at the eastern end of Gion. The bright vermillion gates stood out against the clear blue sky, inviting visitors to explore its sacred grounds. As I wandered through the shrine, I admired the intricate details of the architecture and the peaceful atmosphere that enveloped the area. It was interesting to learn that Yasaka Shrine is considered the “patron shrine” of Gion. It’s quite a lively place, especially around festival times. I was a bit too late to witness the Setsubun Festival, which took place earlier in February, but I hear it’s quite the spectacle with geisha throwing soybeans from the main stage.

From Yasaka Shrine, I strolled into Maruyama Park, a sprawling green space that offered a welcome respite from the bustling city streets. Even though it's still February, I could sense the first hints of spring in the air. I read that Maruyama Park is one of the most popular spots for cherry blossom viewing in Kyoto, and I can only imagine how stunning it must be when the sakura trees are in full bloom. Today, the park was relatively quiet, with locals and tourists alike enjoying the serene atmosphere and picturesque scenery. I took a leisurely walk around the park, admiring the meticulously manicured gardens and tranquil ponds.

For lunch, I ventured to Katsukura Tonkatsu Sanjo Main Store, tucked away in a small alley. I had read rave reviews about their tonkatsu, and I was eager to try it for myself. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, and the staff were friendly and attentive. I ordered their signature tonkatsu set, and it did not disappoint. The pork cutlet was perfectly crispy on the outside and tender and juicy on the inside, and the accompanying sauces and sides were equally delicious. It was the perfect comfort food to fuel me for the rest of the day.

As evening approached, I decided to treat myself to a traditional Kaiseki dinner at Hanasaki. I had heard good things about this restaurant, and I was curious to experience this quintessential Kyoto dining experience. Hanasaki is located in a refined townhouse in Gion, and the ambiance was elegant and inviting. The Kaiseki dinner consisted of multiple courses, each artfully prepared and beautifully presented. From the delicate vegetable tofu to the melt-in-your-mouth braised pork belly, every dish was a culinary masterpiece. It was a truly memorable dining experience that gave me a deeper appreciation for Japanese cuisine.

To cap off the evening, I decided to check out UNDERBAR-KYOTO, a quirky little bar known for its neon lights and live DJ. It was a bit of a hidden gem, tucked away in the basement of a building, but it was well worth the effort to find. The bar had a fun and energetic vibe, and the staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming. I ordered a couple of local beers and enjoyed the music and the company of the other patrons. It was a great way to unwind after a long day of exploring.

As I walked back to Hotel Gracery Kyoto Sanjo, I couldn't help but reflect on the day's adventures. Gion, Yasaka Shrine, and Maruyama Park had all exceeded my expectations, and I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience the beauty and culture of Kyoto. It's interesting to note that February 25th also marks the Tenjin-san Market, but I was too tired to check it out. Maybe next time!

Tomorrow, I plan to visit Nijo Castle, the Kyoto International Manga Museum, and the Kyoto Botanical Gardens. I’m particularly excited about the Manga Museum; it sounds like a fun and unique experience. And perhaps I’ll do some shopping at the Harajuku Chicago Kyoto Store. For dinner, I've made a reservation at Teppan Tavern Tenamonya. I’m looking forward to trying some local specialties there. I’ll be sure to share my experiences with you all soon. Until then, sayōnara!

I'm finding that traveling solo offers a unique opportunity for self-reflection and discovery. Without the distractions of coordinating with others, I'm free to explore at my own pace and immerse myself fully in the local culture. It's a liberating experience that I highly recommend to anyone who's considering it.

In other news, I really need to get a travel adapter. Charging my camera and phone has been a constant struggle. It’s a small thing, but it makes a big difference when you're trying to document your travels. I'll make sure to pick one up before heading out tomorrow.

All in all, today was a fantastic day of exploration, delicious food, and cultural immersion. Kyoto continues to surprise and delight me, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings. I think I'll sleep well tonight, dreaming of ancient temples, serene gardens, and the vibrant streets of Gion.
