A Day of Discovery in Kyoto

Today was a deep dive into the multifaceted culture of Kyoto. From the grandeur of a historical castle to the vibrant world of manga and the tranquil beauty of a botanical garden, it was a day of contrasts and discoveries that painted a vivid picture of this captivating city.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Komefuku. I decided to try their tempura and seafood. It was a delicious start to the day, fueling me up for a day of exploring. Komefuku had a warm ambiance that reflected the essence of Japanese hospitality.

First on the itinerary was Nijo Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The castle is an impressive display of power and artistry from the Edo period. As I approached the main gate, the sheer scale of the structure was striking. The intricate carvings and gold leaf details on the Karamon gate shimmered in the morning light, offering a glimpse into the opulence within. The castle has a rich history, and I was eager to explore it.

Stepping inside, I was immediately transported back in time. The Ninomaru Palace, with its 'nightingale floors' designed to chirp underfoot to alert the shogunate of intruders, was fascinating. I walked through the various rooms, each adorned with stunning paintings and intricate details that spoke volumes about the lifestyle of the shogunate. The vastness of the palace was impressive, and I could only imagine the ceremonies and important meetings that once took place here. I learned that Nijo Castle will hold the NIJO-JO CASTLE SAKURA FESTIVAL from March 14th to April 13th. There will be a special nighttime illumination event. I might have to come back to see that!

Next, I headed to the Kyoto International Manga Museum. As someone who appreciates both art and storytelling, I was excited to see what this museum had to offer. I was not disappointed. The museum is housed in a former elementary school, which added a nostalgic charm to the experience. Inside, the walls were lined with shelves upon shelves of manga, creating a colorful and immersive environment. It was interesting to learn about the history of manga and its cultural impact, not just in Japan but around the world. I spent hours browsing through the collection, discovering new artists and revisiting some old favorites. There was even a special exhibition showcasing manga, anime and games. It was fun to see the evolution of the art form and its influence on popular culture.

For lunch, I stopped at Tategami, a restaurant known for its Kyoto-style cuisine. It had the atmosphere of a secret hideaway. I tried their Kaiseki Course, which was a series of small, artfully prepared dishes that showcased the local flavors and seasonal ingredients. Each dish was a work of art, both visually and gastronomically. I savored every bite, appreciating the skill and attention to detail that went into creating such a memorable meal. The restaurant purchases vegetables, organic vegetables, and fresh fish from the market every day.

In the late afternoon, I made my way to the Kyoto Botanical Gardens. After the hustle and bustle of the city and the vibrant energy of the manga museum, the gardens provided a welcome respite. The gardens are expansive, featuring a diverse collection of plants and flowers from around the world. I strolled along the winding paths, taking in the sights and scents of the various themed gardens. The conservatory was particularly impressive, housing tropical and subtropical plants in a lush, green environment. It was a peaceful oasis, and I spent a good hour simply wandering and enjoying the tranquility. I learned that the Kyoto Botanical Gardens remain an underrated cherry blossom spot and boast over 500 cherry trees.

Before dinner, I decided to do some shopping at Harajuku Chicago Kyoto Store. I was looking for some unique souvenirs to bring back home. It was fun to browse through the vintage clothing and quirky accessories. I found a few interesting items that I knew Lena would appreciate.

For dinner, I ventured to Teppan Tavern Tenamonya, a small teppanyaki restaurant that serves high-quality wagyu beef. The restaurant is run by a couple who are both chefs. I opted for one of their set menus, which included a selection of grilled meats, vegetables, and, of course, the A5 wagyu beef. The beef was cooked to perfection, melting in my mouth with each bite. The chefs were friendly and engaging, making the dining experience even more enjoyable. The restaurant also has vegetarian and vegan options.

As the day drew to a close, I reflected on the incredible variety of experiences I had in Kyoto. From the historical grandeur of Nijo Castle to the contemporary art of the manga museum and the natural beauty of the botanical gardens, Kyoto had revealed itself to be a city of contrasts and surprises. It was a day that deepened my appreciation for Japanese culture and left me eager to explore even more of this fascinating city. Perhaps I'll even visit Yasaka Shrine at night, since it's so close to Teppan Tavern Tenamonya.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Shugakuin Imperial Villa, Kifune Shrine and Kamigamo Shrine. I'm also planning to check out Bar K6.

Back at the Hotel Gracery Kyoto Sanjo, I felt a sense of contentment. I made sure to charge my camera and portable charger in preparation for another day of exploration. It's a good thing I remembered my portable charger, unlike my travel adapter! I drifted off to sleep, already dreaming of the adventures that awaited me in the days to come.
