A Golden Beginning in Kyoto

Today marked the beginning of my solo adventure in Kyoto, and what a day it was! From shimmering temples to serene gardens and a glimpse into imperial history, Kyoto has already cast its spell. I was especially excited to put my photography skills to the test, capturing the essence of this beautiful city.

The February air was crisp, with temperatures ranging from 2 to 10°C, a cool welcome that invigorated me for a day of exploration. I made sure to layer up, remembering the advice to wear warm clothing and comfortable shoes – essential for the amount of walking I had planned. Though there was a slight chance of snow, I was hoping to see Kyoto wrapped in a silver world.

My first stop was Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion. Arriving there, the sight was truly breathtaking. The temple, covered in gold leaf, shimmered in the morning light, reflecting beautifully on the pond. It was as if I had stepped into a postcard. Despite the crowds, arriving early allowed me to soak in the peaceful atmosphere. I spent a good hour wandering around, capturing photos from every angle, trying to encapsulate its beauty. It's easy to see why it's one of Kyoto's most popular spots; the harmonious blend of architecture and nature is simply mesmerizing.

Few places in Kyoto capture the essence of Japanese aesthetics quite like Kinkaku-ji. Its golden exterior glistening in the sunlight is a sight that leaves an indelible mark on every traveler's memory.

Next on the itinerary was Ryoan-ji, famous for its Zen garden. After a short bus ride, I arrived at the temple and entered the serene space. The garden, with its 15 rocks arranged on a bed of white gravel, was a lesson in minimalist beauty. I sat there for a while, trying to find my own zen, contemplating the arrangement and the hidden rock that’s always out of view. It’s amazing how such a simple design can evoke so much thought and tranquility. The garden was tranquil and at that early morning hour there were very few tourists, and I could walk around in peace. There are three main sites to see: the famous Rock Garden, the large Kyoyochi Pond and the garden space.

Before heading to my next destination, I stopped by Katsukura - Kyoto Porta for breakfast. I opted for their famous tonkatsu. The pork cutlet was perfectly crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. With free refills of rice, miso soup, and cabbage, it was the perfect way to start the day.

After breakfast, I made my way to the Kyoto Imperial Palace. The palace, surrounded by a vast park, offered a glimpse into Japan's imperial history. Although the interiors were closed, I enjoyed strolling through the grounds, admiring the elegant architecture and serene gardens. It was fascinating to imagine the emperors who once lived and ruled from this very spot. The Kyoto Imperial Palace (also known as Kyoto Gosho) consists of four main buildings, plus several smaller halls and residences. While the buildings can only be admired from the outside, visitors can enjoy Kyoto Imperial Palace guided tours to view the gorgeous grounds and learn more about the history of this incredible landmark in Kyoto.

For lunch, I had made a reservation at Kikunoi Roan, a Michelin-starred kaiseki restaurant. The meal was an exquisite experience, a multi-course set menu of creative and beautifully presented dishes. Each course was a work of art, showcasing fresh, seasonal ingredients and highlighting the delicate flavors of Japanese cuisine. The service was impeccable, and the ambiance was serene and refined. I am glad I decided to try the caramel ice cream and buckwheat flour sponge cake for dessert.

In the afternoon, I decided to explore the Kyoto Crafts Store. The store was a treasure trove of traditional crafts, from ceramics and textiles to lacquerware and paper goods. I spent hours browsing the displays, admiring the skill and artistry of the local artisans. I even picked up a few souvenirs for Lena and myself, a reminder of this incredible trip. The permanent exhibition displays 74 types of Kyoto traditional crafts. It covers the charm of traditional crafts deeply rooted in Japanese life, including daily necessities and decorative items for Buddhist and Shinto rituals.

As evening approached, I headed to Gion for dinner at Gion Nanba, another Michelin-starred restaurant specializing in kaiseki cuisine. The restaurant was tucked away in a small alley, adding to its intimate and exclusive atmosphere. The dishes were more traditional than at Kikunoi Roan, with a focus on highlighting the natural flavors of the ingredients. The chef allowed the key offerings of the season – which in winter is fish – to shine. Chef Nanba allows the key offerings of the season to shine. The kitchen is very small, so it's really quite amazing to watch how adroitly the two chefs navigate the tight space, taking command of their stoves, ovens and produce as they juggle numerous food preparation tasks.

After dinner, I took a stroll through Gion, hoping to catch a glimpse of a geisha. Though I didn't see one, the atmosphere of the district was magical, with its narrow streets, traditional wooden buildings, and glowing lanterns. It was the perfect way to end my first day in Kyoto.

Reflecting on the day, I feel a sense of awe and gratitude. Kyoto has exceeded my expectations, offering a blend of history, culture, and natural beauty that is truly unique. I'm already looking forward to tomorrow, where I plan to visit Kiyomizu-dera, Sannenzaka, and Ninenzaka. I also plan to check out the Kyoto Star Bar for a nightcap. As I head back to Hotel Gracery Kyoto Sanjo, I can't help but feel excited about what tomorrow will bring. I am also glad I remembered to pack my travel adapter, as I would not have been able to charge my camera and phone.
