A Solo Cultural Exploration in Kyoto, Japan
Day 2: A Spiritual Journey Through Kyoto's Ancient Streets
Explore Kyoto's timeless beauty: Kiyomizu-dera, Sannenzaka & Ninenzaka offer a captivating journey through history and culture.
Echoes of Ancient Kyoto
Today was a day of wandering through living history. I set out to explore the eastern hills of Kyoto, a place where time seems to slow down, and the echoes of old Japan resonate in every stone and every whispered breeze. It's amazing how much history is concentrated in this area, and I was eager to soak it all in.
My day began with a hearty vegan breakfast at AIN SOPH. Journey KYOTO. I must admit, finding a vegan spot in Kyoto was a pleasant surprise. I opted for their famous pancakes, and they were indeed heavenly – fluffy, light, and the perfect start to a day of exploration. Fuelled up and ready, I made my way toward Kiyomizu-dera.

As I approached Kiyomizu-dera, the temple seemed to emerge organically from the hillside. Founded in 778, its history stretches back over 1250 years. I was immediately struck by the sheer scale of the wooden stage, jutting out from the main hall. I learned that it was constructed without the use of any nails, a testament to the ingenuity and craftsmanship of the builders. The view from the stage was breathtaking – a panoramic vista of Kyoto nestled amidst the surrounding hills. Even with the ongoing renovations on the main hall, the temple exuded a sense of timelessness and serenity.
The temple's name, Kiyomizu-dera, translates to 'Temple of Pure Water,' and it’s derived from the Otowa Waterfall, which cascades down the mountain. I joined the throng of visitors lining up to drink from the sacred waters, each stream said to offer different benefits: health, longevity, and success in studies. I chose the stream for health, hoping for a long and adventure-filled life ahead. The crisp, clear water felt invigorating, a refreshing contrast to the cool February air. It was quite chilly today; the weather forecast predicted highs around 49°F (9°C).
To walk in Kyoto is to walk through a living museum, where every corner holds a story and every step echoes with the whispers of the past.
After exploring Kiyomizu-dera, I descended into the charming streets of Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka.
Discover the historic allure of Sannenzaka, a traditional street in Kyoto, filled with wooden architecture, unique shops, and stunning views of Kiyomizu-dera Temple.
These historical slopes, with their cobblestone paths and traditional wooden buildings, transported me back in time. I strolled leisurely, browsing the quaint shops selling local crafts, sweets, and souvenirs. The atmosphere was enchanting, a blend of old-world charm and modern-day commerce. I found myself captivated by the intricate details of the traditional architecture, the delicate beauty of the handcrafted goods, and the tantalizing aromas wafting from the tea houses and restaurants.
I learned that Ninenzaka was built in 807 and Sannenzaka in 808. There's a local myth that says if you fall on Sannenzaka, you'll die within three years, and if you fall on Ninenzaka, you'll die within two. I made sure to watch my step!
For lunch, I ventured into Kyoto cuisine Teramachi Yoshikura, a restaurant known for its traditional Kyoto cuisine.

I opted for a set meal featuring fresh fish and seasonal local vegetables. The meal was a delightful exploration of flavors and textures, a testament to the artistry and skill of the chef. The restaurant also offered an Obanzai All-You-Can-Eat option, featuring an array of local side dishes that perfectly complemented the main course.
As the day drew to a close, I found myself at Pound Sanjo-Kiyamachi for dinner.

This restaurant, nestled along the Takase River, is renowned for its exquisite meat dishes. I decided to treat myself to a Kobe beef steak, and it was an unforgettable culinary experience. The steak was cooked to perfection, tender and flavorful, and the attentive service added to the overall ambiance of the restaurant. The chef's skill was evident in every bite, a true celebration of Japanese cuisine.
To cap off the evening, I decided to experience Kyoto's nightlife at Kyoto Star Bar.

Tucked away in a quiet corner of the city, the bar exuded a cozy and inviting atmosphere. I savored a meticulously crafted cocktail, enjoying the smooth jazz music and the sophisticated ambiance. It was the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploration, a moment to reflect on the beauty and history I had encountered.
One thing that struck me today was how well Kyoto blends the old and the new. Tomorrow, I'm planning to visit Arashiyama, including the Tenryu-ji Temple and the famous Bamboo Path. I've heard it's another must-see location in Kyoto, and I'm eager to experience its natural beauty. I'm also planning to stop by the Kyoto Station ASTY Kyoto Kyoani Goods Store, as I am a big fan of anime and want to see what they have to offer.
As I headed back to Hotel Gracery Kyoto Sanjo, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience the magic of Kyoto.

It's a city that captivates the senses, nourishes the soul, and leaves a lasting impression on the heart. I'm already looking forward to tomorrow's adventures, eager to uncover more of Kyoto's hidden gems and cultural treasures.
Tonight, though, I’ll need to remember to buy a travel adapter, since I forgot mine! It will be useful for the rest of the trip, and I don’t want to have to worry about charging my camera.
It's February, and I've heard that the Plum Blossom Festival at Kitano Tenmangu Shrine is a sight to behold. The festival is held on February 25th, and I'm hoping to be able to attend. I've also heard that there are several Setsubun festivals held at shrines around the city in early February. I'll have to check those out as well.
Until tomorrow!
