A Solo Cultural Exploration in Kyoto, Japan
Day 9: A Day of Vermilion Gates and Ancient Wonders in Kyoto
Exploring Kyoto's iconic Fushimi Inari, serene Toji Temple, and panoramic Kyoto Tower on a solo journey through Japan's cultural heart.
Kyoto's Timeless Charms
Today was a deep dive into the heart of Kyoto, a city that continues to surprise me with its blend of the ancient and the modern. It's a place where you can walk through a tunnel of vibrant red gates one moment and stand atop a tower gazing over a sprawling metropolis the next. These are the experiences that resonate deeply, reminding me why I set out on this solo adventure in the first place.
My day began early, fueled by a traditional Japanese breakfast at Kikuichimonjushirokanenaga honten. While I appreciate a good continental breakfast, there's something uniquely satisfying about starting the day with grilled fish, miso soup, and perfectly steamed rice. It set the tone for a day of cultural immersion and exploration.

Fushimi Inari Taisha: A Journey Through a Thousand Gates
My first stop was Fushimi Inari Taisha, a place I had eagerly anticipated visiting. The thousands of vermilion torii gates snaking up the mountainside are even more breathtaking in person than in photographs. Each gate, donated by individuals and businesses, is a testament to gratitude and hope. The sheer scale of the shrine is impressive; the seemingly endless path invites you to lose yourself in contemplation. The history of Fushimi Inari Taisha dates back to the 8th century, with its origins tied to the worship of Inari Okami, the god of rice, sake, and prosperity. As I walked, I reflected on the shrine's significance, not just as a religious site but as a symbol of perseverance and gratitude. The climb was invigorating, and the views from the upper reaches of the mountain offered a stunning panorama of Kyoto. I took my time, stopping to admire the smaller shrines and fox statues (kitsune) that dot the landscape. I even managed to capture a few photographs that, I hope, do justice to the shrine's beauty.
The journey through Fushimi Inari's gates is a pilgrimage not just through space, but through time and tradition.
Toji Temple: A Glimpse into Buddhist History
Next on my itinerary was Toji Temple, another of Kyoto's UNESCO World Heritage sites. Founded in 796, Toji Temple, or East Temple, was one of the three Buddhist temples permitted when Kyoto became the capital. Emperor Saga gifted the temple to Kobo Daishi (also known as Kukai), a revered monk who established Shingon Buddhism in Japan. The temple's five-story pagoda is particularly striking. Standing at 57 meters, it's the tallest wooden pagoda in Japan and a symbol of Kyoto. The Kondo Hall houses a statue of Yakushi Buddha, the Buddha of medicine, flanked by Nikko and Gakko Bodhisattvas. The Kodo Hall contains nineteen statues brought from China by Kobo Daishi, arranged in a mandala. Walking through the temple grounds, I felt a sense of peace and reverence. The architecture is stunning, reflecting various periods, and the gardens provide a serene space for reflection. It’s fascinating to imagine the temple's role as a center for esoteric Buddhism and its enduring legacy over centuries.

A Culinary Pause: Lunch at Ajikyu
For lunch, I ventured to Ajikyu, a local izakaya recommended for its authentic atmosphere and delicious food. The place was small and intimate, tucked away on a quiet residential street. I followed the owner's recommendations and enjoyed a selection of sashimi and grilled fish, each dish bursting with flavor. It was a delightful culinary experience, offering a glimpse into the everyday life of Kyoto locals.

Kyoto LOFT: A Modern Detour
After immersing myself in history, I decided to explore a more modern side of Kyoto with a visit to Kyoto LOFT. This multi-story emporium is a treasure trove of contemporary Japanese lifestyle products, from innovative home goods to trendy stationery. I found myself drawn to the unique gifts and design items, perfect for souvenirs or adding a touch of Japanese flair to my Berlin apartment. It was a fun contrast to the ancient temples and shrines I had visited earlier in the day.

Kyoto Tower: A Panoramic Perspective
As evening approached, I made my way to Kyoto Tower, a modern structure that offers panoramic views of the city. Some might find it a bit of an oddity amidst Kyoto's traditional landscape, but I found it to be a perfect vantage point to appreciate the city's layout and beauty. From the observation deck, 100 meters above the ground, I could see the sprawling cityscape, with glimpses of temples and shrines nestled among modern buildings. The free telescopes allowed me to zoom in on landmarks like Toji Temple and Kiyomizu-dera. It was a great way to gain a sense of perspective and reflect on the day's adventures. The tower, completed in 1964, stands 131 meters tall and offers a unique contrast to the city's ancient temples and shrines. The observation deck, open 365 days a year, provided a sweeping view of Kyoto. I could even spot some national treasures, like the Sanmon Gate of Tofukuji, from above.

Dinner at THE SODOH HIGASHIYAMA KYOTO: A Culinary Finale
For my final stop of the day, I had dinner at THE SODOH HIGASHIYAMA KYOTO, an Italian restaurant known for its exquisite cuisine and beautiful setting. The restaurant is located in a former residence built in 1929 by the renowned Japanese painter Seihou Takeuchi. The ambiance was elegant, with a blend of modern design and traditional Japanese influences. I enjoyed a delicious meal of handmade pasta and local ingredients, paired with a glass of Italian wine. It was a perfect way to end a day of exploration and cultural immersion. The restaurant combines traditional Italian recipes with fresh local ingredients, creating dishes that are both flavorful and visually stunning. The elegant decor reflects both modern design and traditional Japanese influences.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, I'm excited to explore more of Kyoto's temples, including Shorenin Temple, Eikando Temple, and Ginkaku-ji (Silver Pavilion).
