Day 8: Sacred Sanctuaries and Culinary Delights: Exploring Kyoto's Hidden Gems
Discover Kyoto's serene shrines, imperial villas, and gourmet dining experiences on a captivating solo journey through ancient traditions.
A Day of Serenity and Discovery
Today was a day of venturing into the northern reaches of Kyoto, an area known for its tranquil shrines and imperial estates. It was a journey that blended historical exploration with moments of quiet reflection, perfectly aligning with my desire to delve deeper into the cultural heart of Japan. From meticulously designed gardens to sacred spaces filled with centuries of history, each location offered a unique perspective on Kyoto's rich heritage.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Komefuku. This restaurant was a great way to start the day, offering a variety of traditional Japanese options. I chose a tempura set, which was light, crispy, and flavorful. It was the perfect fuel for a day of exploration.

Shugakuin Imperial Villa: A Stroll Through History
First on my list was the Shugakuin Imperial Villa. Securing a reservation beforehand was essential, and I was glad I planned. The villa is a sprawling estate consisting of three separate gardens, each designed with meticulous care. As I walked through the grounds, I was struck by the harmony between the natural landscape and the man-made structures. The villa was built in the mid-seventeenth century by the order of the Retired-Emperor Gomizunoo. It is located at the foot of Mt. Hiei, and the vast premises feature three villas: the lower, middle and upper villas.

The upper garden was particularly impressive, with its large pond and carefully arranged stones. It was easy to imagine the emperors of the past strolling through these gardens, enjoying the peace and tranquility. Unfortunately, Lena couldn't be here to appreciate it with me, as she would have loved the landscape design.
The beauty of Kyoto lies not just in its famous landmarks, but in the quiet corners where history whispers and nature soothes.
Kifune Shrine: A Mystical Encounter
Next, I headed to Kifune Shrine, nestled in the mountains north of Kyoto. The shrine is dedicated to the kami (spirits) of water and rain, and the approach to the shrine is lined with iconic red lanterns. As I walked along the path, I felt a sense of anticipation building. The shrine is beautiful, and there are a lot of things to see and do. You can walk the path of Torii gates, visit the main shrine, and eat at local restaurants.

The lanterns, combined with the surrounding forest, created a mystical atmosphere. I took my time to explore the shrine, admiring the intricate details of the architecture and the serene beauty of the natural surroundings. I made a small offering and took a moment to reflect on the importance of water in Japanese culture.
It's interesting to note that February is known for Setsubun events and plum blossoms beginning to bloom, adding to the charm of visiting shrines during this time. There's even a special lighting at Kifune Shrine on snowy days, which I unfortunately missed, but it sounds absolutely magical!
Kamigamo Shrine: Ancient Traditions
My final stop for the day was Kamigamo Shrine, one of the oldest Shinto shrines in Japan. The shrine is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and it's known for its beautiful architecture and peaceful atmosphere. As I entered the grounds, I was immediately struck by the sense of history and tradition.

The main buildings of the shrine are impressive, with their intricate carvings and elegant design. I spent some time wandering through the grounds, admiring the various structures and taking in the peaceful atmosphere. I was particularly interested in the shrine's history, which dates back to the 7th century. According to some sources, February hosts events such as the Kigen Sai at Kamigamo Shrine, which includes traditional performances like Kendo. It's fascinating to witness these ancient customs still being practiced today.
Culinary Curtain Call
After a day of exploring these serene locations, it was time for lunch. I decided to try Arancino Kyoto, an Italian restaurant that came highly recommended. I opted for their famed sea urchin pasta, and I must say, it lived up to the hype. The cream was smooth, and it blended well with the noodles. I recommend that you order this if you ever find yourself at Arancino Kyoto.

As evening approached, I made my way to Gion Mikaku for dinner. This steakhouse is known for its high-quality Wagyu beef, and I was eager to try it for myself. The restaurant had a cozy and intimate atmosphere, and the staff was friendly and attentive. I ordered a steak cooked teppanyaki-style, and it was absolutely delicious. The beef was tender, juicy, and full of flavor.

To end the day, I ventured to Bar K6, a sophisticated spot known for its extensive selection of drinks. The atmosphere was relaxed and inviting, perfect for unwinding after a long day. I enjoyed a glass of Japanese whiskey, savoring the smooth taste and reflecting on the day's adventures.

Final Thoughts on Day 8
Today was a reminder of why I love traveling solo. It allowed me to fully immerse myself in the experience, to explore at my own pace, and to connect with the culture in a meaningful way. As I prepare for tomorrow's itinerary, which includes visits to Fushimi Inari Taisha, Toji Temple, and Kyoto Tower, I feel grateful for the opportunity to experience the beauty and history of Kyoto.
I'm particularly excited about Fushimi Inari Taisha, with its thousands of vibrant red torii gates winding up the mountain. And of course, seeing Kyoto from above at Kyoto Tower should offer a completely different perspective on this amazing city.
The blend of serene temples, stunning gardens, and culinary delights has truly made this solo journey unforgettable. I'm looking forward to sharing more of my adventures as I continue to explore Kyoto's hidden gems. I am also looking forward to sharing stories with Lena when I get back to Berlin.
