Family Adventure on Naoshima Island: Art, Culture, and Nature
Day 9: Art in Motion: A Day of Kinetic Sculptures and Serene Reflections on Naoshima
Exploring Naoshima's art scene through kinetic sculptures, tranquil temples, and delightful local flavors with my family. A day of beauty!
Swinging Through Naoshima's Artistic Heart
Today was a day of discovery and delightful surprises here on Naoshima. The island continues to enchant us with its unique blend of art, nature, and tranquility. It's amazing how a place can feel both stimulating and relaxing at the same time. I'm eager to share our experiences as we continue to soak in all that Naoshima has to offer, capturing every moment with my trusty camera.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Little Plum. Mei, Lina, and I fueled up for the day ahead with their delicious offerings. It's a cozy spot, perfect for starting the day with a smile. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and it set the tone for a day of exploration and artistic appreciation.

After breakfast, we ventured out to see George Rickey's Three Squares Vertical Diagonal, 1972-82. The kinetic sculpture was mesmerizing, with its squares gently swaying in the breeze. It was fascinating to watch how the sunlight played off the metal, creating an ever-changing display of light and shadow. Lina was particularly captivated, chasing the shadows and giggling as the squares danced in the wind. It's moments like these, sharing art with my family, that make these trips so special.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.
Next on our itinerary was Kasaneiwa. The serene and spiritual atmosphere of the location was a welcome contrast to the modern art we had been seeing. Climbing the stairs to reach Kasaneiwa was a bit of a workout, but the view from the top was well worth the effort. The stacked rocks, seemingly defying gravity, were awe-inspiring. Mei found the spot particularly calming, spending a few moments in quiet contemplation. I took some photos, trying to capture the essence of the place, but some things just can't be fully captured by a lens. It's about the experience, the feeling of being present in such a unique and peaceful location.

For lunch, we headed to Yayoda, a seafood restaurant known for its fresh, local ingredients. The meal was a delightful culinary experience, with each dish showcasing the flavors of the sea. Lina, surprisingly, enjoyed the sashimi, a testament to the freshness of the fish. Mei and I savored every bite, appreciating the simplicity and artistry of the cuisine. It's these local culinary experiences that truly immerse you in the culture of a place.

As the day wound down, we decided to check out maimai, a local bar known for its relaxed atmosphere. While Mei and Lina rested back at My Lodge Naoshima, I enjoyed a quiet drink, reflecting on the day's adventures. It was a perfect way to unwind and soak in the ambiance of Naoshima. The bar had a cool, laid-back vibe, and I struck up a conversation with a local artist, exchanging stories and insights about the island's art scene. These unexpected connections are one of the joys of travel.

Dinner was at Luke's Table, located within our lodge. The restaurant focuses on Setouchi slow food, using local ingredients to create simple yet delicious dishes. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with art and exploration. We shared stories and laughter, cherishing the moments we've had together on this incredible island. Lina was already fast asleep when we got back to the room, dreaming no doubt of dancing sculptures and serene temples.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, we plan to visit Chinu - the Black Sea Bream of Uno and Miyanoura Gallery 6. I'm particularly excited about Miyanoura Gallery 6, as I've heard it offers a unique perspective on contemporary art. We'll also be grabbing breakfast at Akaito Coffee, lunch at Tee's DELI GROCERY, and dinner at Namihei. And, of course, a visit to kokochi, a local shop, is on the cards. I'm hoping to find some unique souvenirs to bring back to Berlin.
Naoshima continues to surprise and delight us. The blend of art, nature, and local culture is truly captivating. It's a place that stimulates the senses and soothes the soul, a perfect combination for a family adventure. I'm grateful for the opportunity to share these experiences with Mei and Lina, creating memories that will last a lifetime. And I'm excited to see what tomorrow brings, as we continue to explore this artistic haven.
This trip has been a wonderful escape from my usual routine as a freelance IT consultant in Berlin. It's refreshing to step away from technology and immerse myself in the beauty of art and nature. I find that these experiences often spark new ideas and perspectives, which I can later apply to my work. It's a reminder that inspiration can be found in the most unexpected places. I am also glad that Mei and Lina are enjoying the trip, and that Lina is experiencing a different culture than what she is used to. It's important for her to see the world and learn about different ways of life.
As I sit here writing this blog post, I can't help but feel a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to travel and explore the world with my family. It's a privilege that I don't take for granted, and I cherish every moment. I hope that my blog inspires others to embark on their own adventures, to step outside their comfort zones and discover the beauty and wonder that exists in the world. Whether it's a trip to a far-off land or a simple exploration of your own backyard, there's always something new to discover.
