A Town of Ancient Echoes

After a long journey from Antwerp, I've finally arrived in Hoi An, and the transition feels like stepping through a portal into another era. The air is thick with the scent of incense and something floral, perhaps frangipani, and the gentle sounds of daily life create a symphony that's both calming and intriguing. I'm eager to explore every nook and cranny of this ancient town, to lose myself in its history and discover the stories etched into its walls.

The flight to Da Nang was thankfully uneventful, though I did realize I’d forgotten my Vietnamese phrasebook – a rookie error! Luckily, getting from Da Nang to Hoi An was a breeze. The drive was short, and I was soon pulling up to the Hadana Boutique Resort HoiAn (former Belle Maison Hadana HoiAn). It’s a charming place, a blend of modern comfort and local style, exactly what I needed after a long day of travel. The staff greeted me with warm smiles and refreshing tea, a welcome gesture that immediately made me feel at home.

After settling in, I couldn't resist the allure of Hoi An Ancient Town. My first stop was HOME Hoi An - HOME Vietnamese Restaurant for breakfast. The restaurant is located in a charming French townhouse. I decided on a traditional Vietnamese breakfast of *pho*, which was delicious.

With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I set out to explore the town itself. Hoi An Ancient Town is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and it’s easy to see why. The streets are lined with centuries-old buildings, their ochre walls adorned with colorful lanterns. It felt like wandering through a living museum. The November weather is quite pleasant, with warm days and slightly cooler evenings. Though rain is expected this time of year, it only adds to the town's charm, creating a soft, romantic ambiance.

I spent the morning simply wandering, letting my curiosity guide me. I strolled along the Thu Bon River, watching the boats drift by, their reflections shimmering in the water. I peeked into tailor shops, their shelves overflowing with silks and fabrics of every imaginable color. Hoi An is famous for its tailoring, and I might just have to indulge in a custom-made shirt or two before I leave. I also explored Phố cổ Hội An, taking in all the sights and sounds.

The beauty of Hoi An lies not just in its well-preserved architecture, but in the vibrant tapestry of daily life that unfolds within its ancient walls.

For lunch, I ventured to Morning Glory Original, a restaurant recommended by several locals. I tried the *cao lầu*, a local noodle dish, and it was an explosion of flavors – savory, sweet, and slightly spicy. The restaurant itself was bustling with activity, a testament to its popularity. It's owned and managed by Ms Vy, who also owns other restaurants in town.

After lunch, I decided to immerse myself in the local art scene with a visit to the Precious Heritage Art Gallery Museum. This museum is the result of French photographer Réhahn Croquevielle's journey to capture the cultural beauty of Vietnam’s 54 ethnic groups. The museum is free to enter and showcases photographs, traditional costumes, and artifacts collected over a decade. It was an eye-opening experience, a glimpse into the diverse cultures that make up this fascinating country.

I've always been fascinated by photography, and Réhahn's work is truly inspiring. He spent years living with ethnic communities, documenting their lives and traditions. The portraits are striking, capturing the dignity and resilience of these people. It's a powerful reminder of the importance of preserving cultural heritage.

As the afternoon wore on, I continued my exploration of Hoi An Old Town, diving into the shopping street. Hoi An is renowned for its tailoring and I was keen to see what the hype was about. I popped into a few shops, admiring the silks and linens, the vibrant colors and intricate designs. It's easy to see why so many people come here to have clothes made. I am contemplating having a few items tailored, perhaps a light jacket for the cooler Antwerp evenings. I've heard good things about Be Be Tailor. It's something to consider over the next few days.

For dinner, I chose Secret Garden Hoian, a restaurant tucked away in a quiet alley. The setting was magical, a peaceful oasis away from the bustling streets. The restaurant is known for its traditional Vietnamese cuisine and its tranquil ambiance. I enjoyed a delicious meal of fresh spring rolls and grilled fish, savoring the flavors of Vietnam in a serene setting.

The November air was comfortably cool as I walked back to the Hadana Boutique Resort. The lights of Hoi An twinkled around me, casting a warm glow on the ancient streets. It's a truly enchanting place, a town that seems to exist outside of time. I am already captivated by its charm, and I know that the next ten days will be filled with unforgettable experiences. I know that the rainy season does come with its challenges and that the weather can switch between sunny days and chilly nights unexpectedly. I've packed a light jacket and a scarf just in case.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Diep Dong Nguyen House, the Nguyen Tuong Family Chapel, and The Old House of Phung Hung. I am looking forward to delving deeper into the history and architecture of this remarkable town. Perhaps I'll also find some time to relax at KoFi Hoi An - Cocktail bar in the evening, a perfect way to end another day of exploration.

As I drifted off to sleep, I thought about Marie and Thomas back home in Antwerp. I wished they could be here with me, experiencing the magic of Hoi An. Perhaps one day we'll return together, and I can share this special place with them. But for now, I'll continue my solo adventure, soaking up the culture, the history, and the beauty of this ancient town.

I'm also mindful of the Vietnam Cultural Heritage Day (November 23) celebrations that will be taking place during my visit. It will be a wonderful opportunity to learn more about the country's rich heritage and to participate in the local festivities. Perhaps I can catch the tail end of the celebrations, experiencing the exhibitions and cultural activities planned for the occasion. It is exciting to think that I may be able to experience Vietnam Cultural Heritage Day during my trip.

This journey is not just a vacation; it's a chance to connect with the past, to appreciate the present, and to reflect on the future. And who knows, maybe I'll even find a few treasures for my antique restoration business back in Antwerp. After all, every object has a story to tell, and Hoi An is a town overflowing with stories waiting to be discovered.
