Whispers of the Past, Tastes of the Present

Today was a delightful blend of history, gastronomy, and a touch of local nightlife here in Mols Bjerge. It's amazing how much this region offers, from ancient monuments to cozy corners where you can savor the flavors of Denmark. I'm so glad I get to share these experiences with my friends, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurant Moment. The sustainable, vegetarian fine-dining experience was truly exceptional. It's inspiring to see a restaurant so dedicated to using locally sourced ingredients and employing sustainable practices. It reminded me of the importance of making conscious choices, not just in our travels but in our everyday lives back in Helsinki. Fuelled up with a delicious meal, we set off to explore the historical landmarks of the area.

Our first stop was Poskær Stenhus, an ancient burial site dating back to 3300 BC. Standing among those massive stones, I couldn't help but feel a connection to the people who lived here thousands of years ago. It's incredible to think about the rituals and ceremonies that took place on this very spot. The sheer size of the stones, especially the 11-tonne capstone, is awe-inspiring. It made me ponder the ingenuity and determination of the people who erected this monument so long ago. It was a beautiful spring day, and the surrounding landscape was lush and green, adding to the serene atmosphere of the site.

History is not a burden on the memory but an illumination of the soul.

Next, we ventured to Kalø Castle, a ruined fortress with a fascinating history. The castle was built in 1313 by King Erik Menved to suppress peasant revolts. The setting is stunning, with the castle ruins perched on a small island connected to the mainland by a 500-meter-long causeway. Walking along that cobbled path, worn smooth by centuries of footsteps, felt like stepping back in time. The views from the castle ruins were breathtaking, with the Mols Bjerge hills rolling away into the distance. I learned that the castle had also served as a prison, holding notable figures like Gustav Vasa, who later became the King of Sweden. It's amazing to think about the stories these stones could tell if they could talk.

For lunch, we stopped at Stenbækhus / mad på Mols, a local catering service that also offers meals. We enjoyed a delightful smørrebrød, a traditional Danish open-faced sandwich. It was the perfect way to refuel after our historical explorations. The ingredients were fresh and the flavors were vibrant, giving us a true taste of the region. I was particularly impressed by their commitment to using fresh ingredients and traditional craftsmanship. It’s always a treat to discover local gems like this that take pride in their culinary heritage.

In the evening, we had dinner at Restaurant Mols Bjerge. The food was delicious, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. It was a lovely way to end a day filled with exploration and discovery. The restaurant had a cozy, rustic charm, and the staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming. It felt like a true local experience, and I enjoyed chatting with some of the other diners and learning more about the area.

To cap off the night, we decided to check out Mols Cross Club, a local bar known for its lively atmosphere. I must admit, I don't usually frequent bars, but I was curious to experience a bit of the local nightlife. The atmosphere was indeed vibrant, with music, laughter, and friendly chatter filling the air. It was a fun way to unwind and soak in the local culture. I even tried a local beer, which was surprisingly good!

As I reflect on the day, I'm struck by the diversity of experiences Mols Bjerge has to offer. From ancient history to culinary delights to lively nightlife, there's something for everyone here. And the natural beauty of the landscape is simply breathtaking. I'm so grateful for the opportunity to explore this region with my friends and to share these experiences with all of you.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, we plan to explore more of the natural wonders of Mols Bjerge, including the Mols Bjerge hills themselves and Jernhatten - Djursland, a coastal cliff offering stunning views. We'll also be trying out MolsCafeen for breakfast, Restaurant Moment again for lunch (it was that good!), and Molskroen for dinner. I’m also intrigued by Rugaard Camping Djursland - I toppen af Nationalpark Mols Bjerge, which seems like a great place to pick up some local souvenirs.

Good night from Mols Bjerge, and stay tuned for more adventures!

Oh, and I almost forgot to mention: I realized today that I forgot to pack sunscreen and a portable phone charger! Luckily, my friends had some to share, but it's a good reminder to always double-check your packing list before embarking on a trip.

I'm also starting to wonder if there might be mold in the air ducts where we are staying, as there's a slight musty smell. I'll keep an eye on it and perhaps look into getting an air quality test when I get back to Helsinki. It's always good to be mindful of these things, especially since I'm generally quite sensitive to such issues.

I am also curious about another thing. I remember, back in Alaska, that we would always use a mold with open embrace to create car air freshies. I wonder if that is a thing here, and if I can find one in the local shop we plan to visit tomorrow!

Before I sign off, I wanted to share something personal. As some of you know, I'm a librarian specializing in Arctic and Nordic literature. Today, as I stood among the ancient stones of Poskær Stenhus, I couldn't help but think about the stories and myths that have been passed down through generations in this region. It reminded me of the power of storytelling and the importance of preserving our cultural heritage. It's moments like these that make me appreciate my work even more.

Until tomorrow, happy travels!
