A Day of Heights and Horizons
Today was a day of reaching new heights, both literally and figuratively, as we ventured into the heart of Mols Bjerge National Park. With my friends by my side, I was ready to explore the unique landscapes and savor the local flavors that this beautiful region of Denmark has to offer. It was a day filled with stunning views, delicious food, and the kind of camaraderie that makes travel so special.

The morning started with a hearty breakfast at MolsCafeen. It’s amazing how a simple meal of freshly baked bread, local cheeses, and strong coffee can set the tone for a day of adventure. Fuelled up and ready to go, we set our sights on Mols Bjerge, eager to experience the rolling hills that give the park its name. The weather was perfect—a bright, sunny day with a gentle breeze, ideal for hiking. We spent hours traversing the trails, each turn revealing a new vista more breathtaking than the last. The landscape here is truly unique, shaped by glaciers from a bygone era, leaving behind a tapestry of hills, valleys, and stunning viewpoints. I couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe and gratitude for the natural beauty surrounding me. Hiking through Mols Bjerge, I was struck by the sheer variety of the landscape. One moment we were surrounded by lush woodlands, the next we were walking across open heathland, with views stretching out to the sea. The trails were well-maintained, and it was easy to lose ourselves in the tranquility of the surroundings. We even stumbled upon a few granite barrows, ancient burial mounds that served as silent witnesses to the area's rich history. It was a humbling experience to walk in the footsteps of those who came before us, imagining what life must have been like in this beautiful, yet rugged, landscape.
The best view comes after the hardest climb.
After our invigorating hike, we drove towards Jernhatten - Djursland, a protected hill known for its panoramic views of the Kattegat Sea. The drive itself was a treat, with picturesque villages and rolling fields dotting the landscape. As we approached Jernhatten, the anticipation grew. The hill rises dramatically from the coastline, promising a vista that would be well worth the climb. Parking near Havmølleåen, we started our ascent. The path was steep in places, but the views kept us motivated. The unique flora and fauna, a result of low rainfall and significant sun exposure, made the climb even more interesting. Reaching the summit of Jernhatten was an exhilarating experience. The views were simply stunning. To the north, we could see the island of Hjelm, and in every direction, the coastline stretched out before us, a mosaic of blue sea and green fields. The wind was strong at the top, but the feeling of accomplishment and the beauty of the surroundings made it all worthwhile. I took countless photos, trying to capture the essence of this magical place, but I knew that no image could truly do it justice. Jernhatten, I learned, is not just a scenic viewpoint but also a place of unique natural significance. The hill is home to rare plants typically found in southeastern Europe, thriving here due to the specific climate conditions. The area is also known for its geological features, with the hill itself composed of marl-like clay formed at the end of the Ice Age. Knowing this added another layer of appreciation to the experience, understanding that we were standing on a place shaped by both time and unique environmental factors. The area of Jernhatten is also popular among divers. They come to explore the underwater stone reef, where, if you are lucky, you can find remains from the English Wars. We did not go diving, but it is certainly something to consider for a future visit.
