A Fond Farewell to Mols Bjerge

As our two-week adventure in Mols Bjerge National Park draws to a close, I find myself filled with a bittersweet mix of emotions. This trip has been an incredible journey through Denmark's natural beauty and rich history, shared with some of my dearest friends. From exploring ancient ruins to savoring local delicacies, every moment has been a treasure. It's hard to believe our time here is already coming to an end, but the memories we've made will undoubtedly last a lifetime.

Our final day began with a hearty breakfast at MolsCafeen in Ebeltoft. The cozy atmosphere and delicious Danish pastries were the perfect start to a day filled with exploration. I savored the freshly brewed coffee, thinking about all the wonderful moments we’ve experienced as a group. It felt good to sit and reflect before diving into our last planned adventures.

After breakfast, we set off to explore Kalø Castle. The drive there was beautiful, with the rolling hills of Mols Bjerge providing a stunning backdrop. As we approached the castle, the causeway leading to the island offered a picturesque view of the ruins against the backdrop of the sea. The fresh sea air and the sound of the waves made the experience even more magical. Markus, ever the history buff, was particularly excited about this stop. He had read about Kalø Castle's strategic importance in medieval Denmark and was eager to see it up close. The walk along the causeway was bracing, the wind whipping around us as we made our way to the castle entrance.

Exploring the ruins of Kalø Castle was like stepping back in time. The castle, built in 1313 by King Erik Menved, has a rich history, having served as a royal residence and a prison. Standing within the ancient walls, I imagined the lives of those who once inhabited this fortress. The views from the top of the remaining towers were breathtaking, offering a panoramic vista of Kalø Vig and the surrounding landscape. Aino would have loved this place; she's always been fascinated by castles and knights. I made a mental note to bring her here someday.

“The best journeys answer questions that in the beginning, you didn't even think to ask.”

Next on our itinerary was a hike through Mols Bjerge itself. We chose a trail that promised stunning views and a chance to immerse ourselves in the park's natural beauty. As we walked, the landscape unfolded before us, revealing a tapestry of rolling hills, lush woodlands, and open grasslands. The air was filled with the scent of wildflowers, and the sounds of birds singing created a peaceful symphony. I felt a sense of tranquility wash over me, a reminder of the simple joys of being in nature.

The trails were well-maintained, and we encountered other hikers along the way, all eager to share their love of the park. We even spotted a few of the wild horses that roam freely in the area, their presence adding to the park's unique charm. I took countless photos, trying to capture the beauty of the landscape, but I knew that no image could truly do it justice. You have to experience it firsthand to fully appreciate the magic of Mols Bjerge.

For lunch, we stopped at Stenbækhus / mad på Mols, a local catering service known for its delicious Danish cuisine. We enjoyed a delightful meal of traditional smørrebrød, open-faced sandwiches topped with various savory ingredients. Each sandwich was a work of art, both visually appealing and incredibly tasty. The flavors were fresh and vibrant, a true celebration of Danish culinary heritage. It was the perfect way to refuel after our morning of exploring.

In the afternoon, we visited Ørnbjerg Mølle, an old watermill nestled in the woods. The mill dates back to the 16th century and offers a glimpse into Denmark's industrial past. Although we didn't get to see the mill in operation, the surrounding area was beautiful, with a tranquil stream and lush greenery. We took a leisurely stroll around the mill, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere and the sounds of nature. It was a reminder of a simpler time, when life moved at a slower pace.

Before dinner, we decided to do some shopping at Ørnbjerg Mølle. It was a great opportunity to pick up some local crafts and souvenirs. I found a beautiful hand-knitted scarf, perfect for the Helsinki winters, and a few small trinkets for Aino. Supporting local artisans is important to me, and I was happy to find such unique and well-made items.

Our final dinner was at Molskroen Strandhotel og Molskroens Brasserie, a renowned restaurant known for its exquisite French cuisine and stunning beachfront location. We indulged in a multi-course meal, each dish a culinary masterpiece. The flavors were complex and refined, and the presentation was impeccable. As we dined, we watched the sunset over the sea, the sky ablaze with vibrant colors. It was a perfect ending to our trip, a celebration of friendship, adventure, and the beauty of Mols Bjerge.

As I packed my bags, I couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude for this incredible experience. Mols Bjerge National Park had exceeded all my expectations, offering a perfect blend of natural beauty, historical significance, and cultural immersion. I had come seeking an escape from the hustle and bustle of city life, and I had found it in this tranquil corner of Denmark. I am bringing home memories that I will treasure forever. I am also bringing home a renewed sense of appreciation for the simple things in life: friendship, nature, and the joy of discovery.

Tomorrow, we begin our journey back to Helsinki. While I am eager to see Markus and Aino, a part of me will always remain in Mols Bjerge. This trip has reminded me of the importance of taking time to explore the world, to connect with nature, and to cherish the bonds of friendship. And who knows, perhaps someday I will return to Mols Bjerge, to once again wander its scenic trails and soak in its tranquil beauty.

For now, it's time to say goodbye. But I know that this is not the end of my adventures. The world is vast and full of wonders waiting to be discovered, and I am eager to continue my journey, one step at a time.
