Family Adventure in Hornstrandir: An Icelandic Wilderness Escape
Day 10: A Day of Tranquility and Tastes in Ísafjörður
Discover Ísafjörður's charm with a scenic hike to Stórurðarlundur, delightful meals, and a touch of icy magic at an ice bar.
Finding Serenity in Ísafjörður
Today was a beautiful blend of gentle exploration and culinary delights in and around Ísafjörður. It felt like a perfect pause before our final day in the wilderness of Hornstrandir. After so many days of rigorous hiking and unpredictable weather, a touch of civilization was exactly what we needed.
The day started with the aroma of freshly brewed coffee wafting through the air as we made our way to Kaffibarinn for breakfast. The cozy atmosphere was just what we needed to warm up our spirits. Sipping on strong Icelandic coffee, we enjoyed some pastries and planned our day. Aino was particularly excited about the prospect of a less strenuous day, and Markus was keen to explore more of the town's culinary scene.
Our main objective for today was Stórurðarlundur, a park just outside Ísafjörður known for its stunning landscapes and peaceful trails. The drive there was scenic, with the fjords stretching out before us like shimmering ribbons. I couldn’t help but think of my work back in Helsinki, surrounded by books about these very landscapes. It felt surreal to be living the stories I usually only read about.
The hike to Stórurðarlundur was gentle, a welcome change from the demanding terrains we'd been navigating. The trail wound through lush greenery, with the sounds of birds filling the air. Aino skipped ahead, her laughter echoing through the trees. Markus and I strolled at a more leisurely pace, taking in the breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and fjords. The park itself was an oasis of tranquility. We found a serene spot by a small stream and simply sat, soaking in the beauty of Icelandic nature. It was the perfect opportunity to reflect on our journey so far.

The best view comes after the hardest climb. Today reminded me that sometimes, the most rewarding experiences are those that allow us to simply be present and appreciate the beauty around us.
After our hike, our stomachs started to rumble, leading us to Pablo Discobar for lunch. The funky decor and lively atmosphere were a stark contrast to the serene park we had just left. We indulged in some delicious Icelandic fare, savoring every bite. Aino, ever the social butterfly, struck up a conversation with the friendly staff, learning about the local music scene. It’s moments like these that make traveling with family so special – seeing the world through their eyes and sharing in their discoveries.

In the late afternoon, we ventured back into Ísafjörður, eager to experience more of its charm. We wandered through the town's colorful streets, admiring the traditional Icelandic architecture. The houses, with their vibrant hues and quaint designs, seemed to tell stories of generations past. I imagined the lives of the fishermen and their families who had called this place home, their days filled with hard work and resilience.
As evening approached, we decided to treat ourselves to a special dining experience at Faktorshus in Haestikaupstadur. The restaurant came highly recommended, and we were not disappointed. The ambiance was elegant yet welcoming, and the food was exquisite. We savored each course, enjoying the flavors of Iceland. Markus, ever the connoisseur, paired our meal with a local wine, adding to the overall experience.

To cap off the evening, we decided to venture into Reykjavik for a unique experience at Magic Ice Reykjavík - Ice Bar & Gallery. The bar was a spectacle of ice sculptures and creative lighting, it was truly a unique experience, even if a little touristy. Sipping on cocktails in glasses made of ice, we marveled at the artistry around us. Aino was particularly fascinated by the intricate designs, and even Markus, who is not usually one for tourist traps, admitted that it was quite impressive.

As we head back to our accommodation, I can’t help but feel a sense of gratitude for the experiences we’ve had today. It was a day of simple pleasures, of connecting with nature and each other. It was a reminder that sometimes, the most memorable moments are those that unfold organically, without any grand plans or expectations.
Tomorrow marks the end of our adventure in Hornstrandir. We plan to spend the day back in the Hornstrandir Nature Reserve, soaking in the last moments of its untouched beauty. We'll start with breakfast at Kaffi Sól, then head out for a final hike, maybe even visit The Fjord Hub for some last-minute souvenirs. Dinner at Thai Tawee will be a perfect way to celebrate our journey before we head back to Helsinki. I'm already anticipating the quiet moments of reflection I'll have as I sort through my photos and jot down my memories in my travel journal.
As I reflect on the day, I realize that travel is not just about seeing new places, but about experiencing them fully, with all our senses. It’s about connecting with the people we meet, savoring the flavors of the local cuisine, and immersing ourselves in the beauty of the natural world. And most importantly, it’s about creating memories that will last a lifetime.
