Westfjords Wonders: Glaciers, Crafts, and Culinary Delights

Today was a day of contrasts, from the stark beauty of glaciers to the cozy charm of local shops and restaurants. It’s amazing how much Iceland manages to pack into a single day, especially in a region as remote and captivating as the Westfjords. After spending so many years surrounded by Nordic and Arctic literature, experiencing this landscape firsthand with Markus and Aino feels like stepping into the pages of my favorite sagas.

Our morning began with a hearty breakfast at Kaffi Norðurfjörður. The café itself was incredibly inviting, with the aroma of freshly baked bread and strong coffee filling the air. I opted for their famous fish soup, a creamy and comforting concoction that warmed me from the inside out. Markus, ever the traditionalist, chose the Icelandic fish pie, while Aino happily devoured a plate of vöfflur (waffles) with jam. Fuelled up, we set off to chase glaciers!

The drive to Drangajökull útsýnisstaður (viewpoint) was nothing short of spectacular. The landscape transformed into a rugged, almost lunar terrain as we ventured further into the Westfjords. The roads twisted and turned, hugging the coastline, with dramatic cliffs on one side and the vast expanse of the sea on the other. I was so glad I remembered to pack my camera, as every bend revealed a new photo opportunity. As a librarian, I'm used to finding beauty in the written word, but Iceland is teaching me to appreciate the visual splendor of the natural world. Aino, ever curious, peppered us with questions about the geology and history of the region, turning our drive into an impromptu lesson on Icelandic geography.

The beauty of a place lies not just in its scenery but in the stories it holds and the people who shape it.

Reaching the Drangajökull viewpoint was truly breathtaking. Even though the glacier was in the distance, its presence was imposing. The sheer scale of the ice against the backdrop of the surrounding mountains was humbling. Drangajökull, I learned, is the northernmost glacier in Iceland and unique for its low elevation. We parked near the Kaldalón inlet and walked closer, feeling the crisp Arctic air on our faces. It was a moment of pure awe, a reminder of the raw, untamed beauty that Iceland has to offer. I made a mental note to find some books on glaciers for Aino when we got back to Helsinki; her curiosity is insatiable.

After our glacial encounter, we headed to Ísafjörður, a charming town nestled in the Westfjords. Our first stop was Falda - Hannyrða- og skartgripaverslun, a delightful little shop specializing in handicrafts and jewelry. As someone who enjoys knitting traditional Finnish patterns, I was immediately drawn to the shop’s collection of yarn and textiles. Aino, always on the lookout for unique accessories, was fascinated by the intricate jewelry pieces crafted by local goldsmiths. We spent a happy hour browsing the shelves, admiring the skill and artistry of the local artisans. I even picked up a beautiful skein of Icelandic wool, envisioning a new scarf project for the coming winter. It’s comforting to know that even in a remote corner of Iceland, the tradition of craftsmanship is alive and well.

For lunch, we stopped at Stúkuhúsið. I savored the soup of the day with freshly baked bread, while Markus enjoyed the local food. Aino, predictably, opted for a homemade cake. The view from Stúkuhúsið was stunning, overlooking the fjord and the surrounding mountains. It was the perfect place to relax and recharge before our afternoon adventures. I must try to find the rhubarb jam recipe, as it was delicious.

In the evening, we treated ourselves to dinner at Edinborg Bistro. Located in the cultural center of Ísafjörður, the bistro exuded a cozy and welcoming atmosphere. The menu offered a variety of Icelandic dishes, with a focus on fresh, local ingredients. Markus and I both chose seafood dishes, savoring the delicate flavors of the Arctic fish. Aino, however, decided on a classic burger, a reminder that even in Iceland, some cravings are universal. The bistro was filled with locals and tourists alike, creating a vibrant and convivial ambiance. It was a lovely way to end our day, surrounded by good food and good company.

As we head back to our campsite, I couldn’t help but reflect on the day’s adventures. From the majestic Drangajökull glacier to the charming streets of Ísafjörður, the Westfjords had captured my heart. I am already looking forward to tomorrow's adventure, as we plan to visit Krossneslaug, a remote thermal pool, and perhaps even stop by Skúli Craft bar for a taste of local brews. It’s days like these that remind me why I love to travel, to explore new places, and to share those experiences with my family.

And as I sit here in our tent, the midnight sun casting a surreal glow over the landscape, I realize that Iceland is more than just a destination; it’s an experience that stays with you long after you’ve left. It is a place that challenges you, inspires you, and reminds you of the beauty and fragility of our planet. And as a librarian, a storyteller, and a traveler, I am grateful for every moment of it.
