Whispers of Ancient Giants and Ocean Views

Today was a day of contrasts, a journey from the heart of Yakushima's ancient forests to its rugged coastline. It was a day filled with quiet contemplation amidst towering trees and invigorating sea breezes, a reminder of the diverse beauty this island holds. I embraced the solitude, letting the natural world speak to me in its own language.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Matsutake. I savored a traditional Japanese breakfast, fueling up for the day's adventures. The warm hospitality and authentic atmosphere of the restaurant set a positive tone for the day.

Daio Sugi: A Meeting with the Great King

My first stop was Daio Sugi, one of the largest and oldest Yakusugi trees on Yakushima. As I approached the ancient cedar, I was immediately struck by its immense size and presence. Standing at 24.7 meters tall with a circumference of 11.1 meters, it truly felt like meeting a king. The sheer age of the tree, estimated to be around three thousand years old, filled me with awe.

The trail to Daio Sugi was an extension of the Arakawa Trail, leading towards the Okabu Trail. The walk itself was a meditative experience, surrounded by the lush greenery and the sounds of the forest. I felt a deep connection to nature, a sense of being a small part of a much larger, ancient world.

Just one look at this grand tree is enough to be impressed.

Although Daio Sugi is no longer in its best condition, with parts of its hollow visible, it was still possible to approach the tree and view it up close. Unlike Jomon Sugi, which can only be seen from an observatory, this proximity allowed me to truly appreciate its grandeur. I spent a long time simply gazing at the tree, imagining all the seasons it had witnessed and the stories it could tell.

Yakushima-todai Lighthouse: A Beacon on the Coast

After my encounter with Daio Sugi, I made my way to the Yakushima-todai Lighthouse. Located on the western side of the island at Cape Nagata, the lighthouse has been protecting maritime safety since 1897. The drive to the lighthouse was scenic, offering glimpses of the rugged coastline and the vast Pacific Ocean.

Though the lighthouse itself is unmanned and not open to visitors, the surrounding area provided stunning views. From this vantage point, I could see Kouerrabu Island, the Mishima Islands, and even the mainland of Kyushu in the distance. The Tokara Islands were visible to the left, creating a panorama of islands and sea.

The sea breeze was invigorating, and the sound of the waves crashing against the shore was both calming and energizing. I spent some time walking along the coastline, exploring the rocky formations and enjoying the solitude. It was a perfect spot for reflection, a place where the vastness of the ocean met the solidity of the land.

Culinary Delights: Lunch at Il Mare

For lunch, I decided to try Il Mare, an Italian restaurant near the Yakushima Airport. It was a delightful change of pace, offering authentic Italian cuisine with a focus on local ingredients. I opted for a seafood pasta, savoring the freshness of the ingredients and the skill of the chef.

The restaurant had a cozy and welcoming ambiance, making it a perfect spot to relax after a morning of exploring. The staff was friendly and attentive, adding to the overall positive experience. It was a reminder that even in a remote island like Yakushima, you can find unexpected culinary gems.

Evening Reflections: Dinner at SamPotei and Drinks at Ganta

As evening approached, I headed to Anbo for dinner at SamPotei, a local izakaya known for its quality ingredients and cozy atmosphere. I had made a reservation, as it's a popular spot and fills up quickly. The jazzy vibes and the friendly service made for a very enjoyable experience. I enjoyed some local dishes and craft beer, savoring the flavors of Yakushima.

After dinner, I decided to check out Ganta, a bar in Miyanoura. It was a late-night izakaya and cafe, open until 2 AM, which is quite late for Yakushima. The bar faced the Miyanoura harbor, offering a nice view. I enjoyed a drink and chatted with some locals, learning more about the island's culture and history.

Tomorrow marks the final day of my solo adventure in Yakushima. My plan is to explore the World Heritage Listed Coastal Road with Wildlife and Shitoko Gajumaru Banyan Park. I also intend to have breakfast at Yakushima Airport Restaurant, lunch at At Pesca, and a farewell dinner at Each Meal, a Once-in-a-Lifetime Encounter. Before heading to the airport, I will check out Gramoon shop. I am looking forward to one last day of exploration and reflection on this magical island.

As I prepare to leave, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the experiences I have had and the memories I have made. Yakushima has left an indelible mark on my soul, a reminder of the power and beauty of the natural world. I know that I will carry these memories with me long after I have left its shores.
