A Day of Discovery in Gran Paradiso
Today was all about immersing myself in the heart of Gran Paradiso National Park, a day filled with the roar of cascading water, the quiet charm of ancient houses, and the comforting flavors of the Aosta Valley. It's days like these that remind me why I traded the familiar streets of Berlin for a solo adventure in the Italian Alps. It's amazing to reflect on the fact that this is day six of my eight-day adventure, and I'm already dreading leaving.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Brasserie Les Pertzes in Cogne. Fuelled up with local pastries and strong coffee, I set off towards my first destination: Cascata di Noasca. The drive itself was a treat, winding through lush valleys with the snow-capped peaks of the Gran Paradiso massif always in view. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of pine and damp earth – a welcome change from the urban atmosphere I'm used to.
The anticipation of seeing Cascata di Noasca had been building since I first read about it. Nestled just inside the southern boundary of the national park, the waterfall is easily accessible from the village of Noasca. As I approached, the sound of rushing water grew louder, hinting at the spectacle to come. I parked the car and followed a well-trodden path leading towards the falls. The trail meandered through a forest, the sunlight dappling through the leaves, creating an ethereal glow. Soon, the trees opened up, revealing the majestic Cascata di Noasca in all its glory. The water plunged down a 32-meter drop, crashing into the rocks below with a thunderous roar. The spray created a fine mist that kissed my face as I stood in awe of its raw power. It's moments like these that make me feel truly alive, connected to something bigger than myself.

I spent a good hour simply watching the waterfall, mesmerized by its constant motion and the way the sunlight played on the water. The surrounding rocks were slick with moisture, and the air was thick with the scent of damp moss and minerals. I took dozens of photos, trying to capture the essence of this natural wonder, knowing full well that no image could truly do it justice. According to local experts, the waterfall was formed during the last glacial period, about twelve thousand years ago. Over the centuries, travelers have praised the grandeur of the falls. As I stood there, breathing in the misty air, I understood exactly what they meant. It was truly one of the most beautiful sights I've seen.
The best view comes after the hardest climb.
After soaking in the beauty of Cascata di Noasca, I decided to head towards Introd, a charming village known for its traditional architecture and historical significance. My destination was Maison Bruil, a well-preserved example of rural Aosta Valley architecture. The drive from Noasca to Introd was scenic, passing through quaint villages and rolling hills dotted with wildflowers. I arrived in Introd in the early afternoon and found Maison Bruil without much difficulty. The house is located in Villes Dessous, and its rustic charm was immediately apparent. The building dates back centuries and offers a glimpse into the life of the Aosta Valley's rural past. Maison Bruil now houses a museum dedicated to traditional food and nutrition, which was fascinating to explore. I learned about the various techniques used to preserve food in the past, as well as the importance of local ingredients in the region's cuisine. The museum also features an Atelier du Goût, where visitors can participate in workshops and tastings. Although there wasn't a workshop scheduled for today, I did sample some local cheese and honey, which were absolutely divine.

After exploring Maison Bruil, I wandered around Introd, soaking in the village's atmosphere. The houses were built of stone, with wooden balconies adorned with colorful flowers. The narrow streets were quiet and peaceful, and I felt as though I had stepped back in time. Introd has a rich history, and it has been inhabited since the Neolithic era. The village is strategically located near the entrance to the Rhêmes and Valsavarenche valleys, making it a popular destination for tourists and hikers. Introd is also known as the village loved by Popes. Since 1989, both Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI have chosen the hamlet of Les Combes as their preferred retreat for summer stays, visiting a total of 12 times.
As evening approached, I made my way to Rhêmes-Saint-Georges for dinner at Le Barmé de l'Ours. The restaurant, whose name translates to the bear's den, is a cozy mountain establishment known for its quality cuisine and enchanting setting. The restaurant prides itself on using seasonal, local, and zero-kilometer ingredients, ensuring that every dish is fresh and full of flavor. I started with a selection of local cured meats and cheeses, followed by a hearty plate of rye gnocchi, a regional specialty. The gnocchi were perfectly cooked and served in a rich, creamy sauce that was simply heavenly. For dessert, I indulged in a slice of homemade apple pie, which was the perfect ending to a perfect meal. I savored the flavors of the Aosta Valley, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience such authentic cuisine.
After dinner, I decided to treat myself to a drink at MPC Maison Publique de la Cervoise in Aosta. The bar had a laid-back atmosphere, with locals and tourists mingling and chatting over drinks. I ordered a local craft beer and savored the moment, reflecting on the day's adventures. It was a perfect way to end a day of exploration and discovery.

As I drove back to my campsite, the stars began to appear in the night sky. The air was cool and crisp, and the silence was broken only by the sound of crickets chirping in the fields. I felt a sense of peace and contentment wash over me, knowing that I had made the most of my day in Gran Paradiso National Park. Tomorrow, I'm planning to explore the Gran Paradiso massif and Prato di Sant’Orso, so it's time to get some rest. I'm also planning to visit the Mountain Shop Aosta, as I forgot to pack sunscreen and a portable phone charger, which I really miss.
This solo trip has been exactly what I needed – a chance to reconnect with nature, challenge myself physically, and discover new cultures. I'm already looking forward to tomorrow's adventures, and I can't wait to see what else Gran Paradiso National Park has in store for me. The memories I'm making here will stay with me long after I return to Berlin.
