Solo Adventure in Gran Paradiso National Park
Day 5: A Day of Royal History and Enchanting Finds in Gran Paradiso
Exploring castles, hunting lodges, and charming shops in Gran Paradiso National Park. A day of history, culture, and delightful discoveries.
Echoes of Royalty and Whimsical Charms
Today's journey through Gran Paradiso National Park was a delightful mix of historical exploration and charming discoveries. It felt like stepping back in time while also indulging in the present, creating a day filled with rich experiences and delightful surprises. From the imposing Castello di Fénis to the serene Royal Hunting House at Orvieille, and the enchanting finds at a local shop, every moment was a unique adventure.
The day began with a hearty breakfast at La Brasserie du Bon Bec. The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong Italian coffee filled the air, setting the perfect tone for a day of exploration. I savored a flaky croissant and a cappuccino, enjoying the cozy atmosphere of the brasserie before heading out. It’s amazing how a good breakfast can fuel not only the body but also the spirit for a day of adventure.
My first stop was the Castello di Fénis, a magnificent structure that immediately transported me back to the Middle Ages. The castle's architecture is remarkably well-preserved, offering a glimpse into the lives of the noble families who once resided here. As I walked through the castle courtyard, I couldn't help but imagine the bustling activity of knights, servants, and visiting dignitaries. The guide shared fascinating stories about the Challant family, who significantly shaped the castle's history and prestige. I was particularly impressed by the intricate frescoes adorning the walls of the chapel and the great hall, depicting scenes of medieval life and religious significance. The level of detail and artistry was truly remarkable. It's incredible to think that these paintings have survived for centuries, offering a window into the past. Unfortunately, the castle was closed from June 9th to 12th, but thankfully it was open today!

The past is never dead. It's not even past.
After immersing myself in medieval history, I made my way to the Royal Hunting House at Orvieille. The drive to Orvieille was scenic, winding through lush forests and offering breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. The Hunting House, once favored by King Vittorio Emanuele for his hunts, now serves as a ranger station and a research facility for the park. The serene atmosphere and the stunning natural surroundings made it easy to understand why the king chose this location for his retreats. I took a leisurely hike along one of the trails near the Hunting House, enjoying the tranquility of the forest and the panoramic vistas of the valley below. The air was crisp and clean, filled with the scent of pine and wildflowers. I even spotted a few deer grazing in the distance, a reminder of the abundant wildlife that calls this park home. Apparently, many of the trails still used today were built by the royals of the House of Savoy, which is a pretty neat fact.

For lunch, I stopped at Rifugio Massimo Mila, a charming mountain retreat known for its regional cuisine. The rifugio was bustling with hikers and nature enthusiasts, all eager to enjoy a hearty meal after a morning of outdoor activities. I ordered a plate of homemade gnocchi with local cheese, savoring every bite as I took in the stunning views from the rifugio's terrace. The manager mentioned that they cater to guests with special dietary needs, offering vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options, which I thought was a wonderful touch. Seems like Roberto Menzio used to manage this rifugio before deciding to change his life and open Rifugio Detto Dalmastro. It's always interesting to hear stories of people who have decided to pursue their passions and make a career out of it.

In the afternoon, I stumbled upon La Bottega Incantata, a whimsical shop in a nearby village. The shop was filled with unique handcrafted items, from colorful ceramics to intricately carved wooden sculptures. I spent quite a bit of time browsing the shelves, admiring the creativity and skill of the local artisans. I ended up purchasing a beautiful hand-painted ceramic bowl as a souvenir, a perfect reminder of my time in Gran Paradiso. The shop owner was a friendly woman named Maria, who shared stories about the history of the shop and the local community. She mentioned that there was a similar shop in Trieste dedicated to Harry Potter merchandise, which sparked my interest. I made a mental note to visit it the next time I'm in the area.

Dinner was at Ristorante La Genzianella, a cozy establishment known for its traditional mountain dishes. I started with a selection of local cheeses and cured meats, followed by a hearty serving of pizzoccheri, a buckwheat pasta dish with cheese, potatoes, and Swiss chard. The flavors were rich and comforting, the perfect way to end a day of exploration. The restaurant had a warm and inviting atmosphere, with a fireplace crackling in the corner and friendly staff eager to share recommendations. They offer a wide variety of wines, so I decided to try a local red wine, which paired perfectly with my meal.

I am grateful for the opportunity to explore this beautiful region and immerse myself in its rich culture and history.
Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Cascata di Noasca and Maison Bruil di Introd. I'm excited to explore these new destinations and continue my adventure in Gran Paradiso National Park. I also plan to grab breakfast at Brasserie Les Pertzes, lunch at Rifugio Grauson - 2510 m, and dinner at Le Barmé de l'Ours. And if I have time, I might check out MPC Maison Publique de la Cervoise, a local bar.
