A Botanical Beginning
The first day of my solo adventure in Gran Paradiso National Park was nothing short of magical. After months of planning and anticipation back in Berlin, I finally traded the city's concrete for the park's lush greenery and towering peaks. Today was all about immersing myself in the natural beauty of the region, starting with a visit to an alpine botanical garden and a leisurely hike along a nature trail.

The journey here was smooth, thankfully. My flight from Berlin to Turin was uneventful, and the subsequent train and bus rides offered stunning previews of the Italian countryside. By late morning, I had arrived in Cogne, a charming village nestled in the heart of the park, ready to begin my exploration.

My first stop was the Giardino botanico alpino Paradisia. As someone who appreciates sustainable living and the beauty of flora, this garden was a dream come true. Located in Valnontey, at an altitude of 1,700 meters, Paradisia is home to over a thousand plant species from the Alps, Apennines, and other mountain regions around the world. The garden was founded in 1955 and named after the Paradisea liliastrum, also known as St. Bruno's Lily. The alpine flowers, medicinal plants and lichens were all so beautiful.

Wandering through the garden, I felt like a kid in a candy store. Each section was meticulously designed to mimic natural alpine environments, from wetlands to moraines and limestone debris. I spent hours admiring the vibrant colors and unique textures of the various plants. Informative panels provided insights into each species, making the experience both educational and visually stunning. The air was crisp and clean, filled with the sweet scent of wildflowers. I even spotted a few butterflies flitting about, adding to the enchanting atmosphere. The garden also has a herbarium, a laboratory and a small library.

I had a delightful breakfast at Hotel Restaurant Paradisia. Fuelling up with some local pastries and a strong Italian coffee, I felt ready to take on the day. The views from the restaurant were incredible, overlooking the valley and the surrounding mountains. It was the perfect way to start my day in Gran Paradiso.

Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished.

After my botanical adventure, I decided to explore the Sentiero Natura Cogne. This nature trail offers a loop that starts near the top of the Montseuc cable car. The trail is known for its panoramic views of the Cogne valley, the Gran Paradiso massif, and Mont Blanc in the distance.

The Sentiero Natura Cogne is divided into two sections, one easy and accessible to all, and another more challenging stretch along the Montseuc ridge. Given my love for a good hike, I opted for the full loop. The trail wound through forests and meadows, offering breathtaking vistas at every turn. The fresh air and the sounds of nature were incredibly soothing, a welcome change from the constant hum of Berlin. Along the way, I encountered several points of interest, each marked with informative signs. I learned about the local flora and fauna, as well as the geological history of the area. It was fascinating to discover the unique characteristics of this alpine environment.

I stopped for lunch at Rifugio Tetras Lyre - Campo Base Gran Paradiso, a cozy mountain refuge. I enjoyed a hearty meal of local cheese and bread, savoring the flavors of the Aosta Valley. The refuge offered stunning views of the surrounding peaks, making it the perfect spot to recharge before continuing my hike.

As the afternoon progressed, I made my way back to Cogne. Before heading to my campsite, I stopped by the Alpine World Shop and Guides to pick up a few essentials and gather some local tips. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful, providing valuable insights into the best hiking routes and viewpoints in the area.

For dinner, I treated myself to a meal at Lou Ressignon, a charming restaurant known for its traditional Aosta Valley cuisine. I indulged in a delicious plate of polenta with wild mushrooms, a local specialty. The restaurant had a warm and inviting atmosphere, making it the perfect place to unwind after a long day of exploring.

Back at my campsite, I reflected on the day's adventures. Gran Paradiso National Park had already exceeded my expectations, and I couldn't wait to see what tomorrow would bring. I was especially excited about visiting the Cascate di Lillaz and Rifugio Vittorio Emanuele II. I made sure my hiking boots were ready and my camera was charged, eager to capture more of this incredible landscape. I also planned to check out Vinosteria Antirouille, a local bar, for a relaxing evening drink.

As I zipped up my tent and settled in for the night, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience such natural beauty. It’s moments like these that remind me why I love solo travel – the freedom to explore at my own pace, to connect with nature, and to discover the hidden gems that each destination has to offer. I drifted off to sleep, dreaming of tomorrow's adventures and the stunning landscapes that awaited me.

Before drifting off to sleep, I made a mental note to buy a portable phone charger and sunscreen as I had forgotten them. I will need them for the next few days exploring the Gran Paradiso National Park.
