Solo Art Exploration on Naoshima Island
Day 10: Island Life: Fishing, Seaside Views, and Culinary Delights on Naoshima
Explore Naoshima beyond art: a fishing adventure, coastal beauty at Tsunosaki, and a taste of local flavors in charming restaurants.
A Day Away From the Art Scene
Sometimes, you just need a break from the masterpieces, even on an island famed for its art. Today was one of those days for me. I decided to explore a different side of Naoshima, one that’s a little more about nature and local life, and a little less about curated exhibitions. It turned out to be just what I needed, a refreshing change of pace that reminded me why I love to travel in the first place.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at APRON CAFE. I had read a lot about it, and it seemed like the perfect spot to fuel up for a day of exploration. The cafe is small and quaint, with a charmingly simple interior. I ordered the seasonal set lunch, which was a delightful mix of local vegetables and perfectly cooked fish. Apparently, the menu is designed by a nutritionist, so I knew I was getting a balanced and healthy meal. It was the perfect start to the day, and the staff were incredibly friendly, making me feel right at home.

After breakfast, I headed to Naoshima Fishing Park. Now, I'm no expert angler, but the idea of spending a morning by the sea, trying my luck at catching something, was appealing. The park itself is beautiful, with lush greenery and stunning coastal views. I rented a rod and some bait, and after a brief tutorial from one of the staff, I cast my line into the water.

I didn't catch anything spectacular, just a couple of small fish that I promptly released back into the sea. But honestly, it didn't matter. The peace and quiet of the park, the gentle lapping of the waves, and the warm sun on my face were reward enough. I even chatted with a local fisherman who shared some tips and stories about the island. It was a lovely, relaxing morning, far removed from the hustle and bustle of the art museums.
Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found not in grand museums, but in the simple moments of everyday life.
Next on my list was Tsunosaki, a scenic spot on the island known for its coastal vistas and tranquil atmosphere. Getting there involved a bit of a trek, but the views along the way were worth it. The landscape is characterized by lush greenery and stunning seascapes, making it perfect for photography enthusiasts like myself. As I walked along the coastal paths, I could hear the gentle sounds of waves lapping against the shore and smell the refreshing scent of sea air.

Tsunosaki itself is a peaceful haven, a place where you can unwind, take leisurely strolls, and appreciate the harmony of art and nature. There are even a few art installations scattered around the landscape, inviting contemplation and reflection. I found a quiet spot overlooking the sea and spent some time simply soaking in the beauty of the surroundings. It was a welcome escape from the crowds and a chance to reconnect with myself.
By this point, I was starting to feel a bit peckish, so I made my way to Nagomi for lunch. This restaurant is located within the Naoshima welfare center, which gives it a unique and inviting atmosphere. It's a place where locals and tourists alike can enjoy hearty Japanese meals made with fresh, local ingredients. I opted for one of their set meals, which was both delicious and affordable.

What I loved most about Nagomi was the sense of community. The communal canteen-like environment encourages social interactions, and I ended up sharing a table with a group of locals who were more than happy to chat and share their stories about the island. It was a truly authentic experience, and it reminded me that travel is not just about seeing new places, but also about connecting with new people. Maximilian would have loved this place, he always says that the best travel experiences are the ones where you get to meet the locals and learn about their culture.
As the day drew to a close, I decided to treat myself to dinner at Chikurin, an izakaya known for its traditional Japanese dishes and cozy atmosphere. The restaurant is run by one man who does everything from taking orders to cooking food and serving drinks. The menu features a delightful selection of dishes, showcasing local ingredients and seasonal flavors. I tried the sashimi and grilled fish, both of which were incredibly fresh and flavorful.

Chikurin is a place where locals gather to unwind after a long day, and the communal setting encourages conversation and connection. I struck up a conversation with a couple of regulars who shared some interesting insights about the island's history and culture. It was a memorable dining experience, one that I'll cherish long after I leave Naoshima.
To cap off the evening, I ventured to Cin.na.mon, a bar near Miyanoura Port. The bar has a funky ambiance and is known for its excellent food and drinks. I settled into one of the traditional tatami rooms and ordered a Naoshima seafood curry, which was generously portioned and full of flavor. The curry had a lighter flavor than your normal Japanese curry, with a hint of citrus. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration.

Before heading back to My Lodge Naoshima, I took a stroll along the harbor. The night was quiet, with just the gentle sound of the waves lapping against the shore. As I looked out at the dark sea, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the experiences I had today. It was a day that reminded me that travel is not just about seeing famous landmarks and visiting popular attractions, but also about immersing yourself in the local culture and connecting with the people who call a place home. Berlin feels a world away from here, but I know that the lessons I'm learning on this trip will stay with me long after I return.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Seaside Gallery and Shipyard Works by Shinro Otake, two more attractions that promise to be visually stimulating. But for now, I'm content to simply relax and savor the memories of a day well spent.
I also heard that the Setouchi Triennale is returning in 2025 and will be held across three seasons: Spring (April 18 to May 25), Summer (August 1 to August 31) and Autumn (October 3 to November 9). It seems like Naoshima is always buzzing with art and culture! Maybe Maximilian and I will come back together to see it!
