A Golden Start to My Kyoto Adventure

Kyoto, a city I've dreamt of exploring for years, finally welcomed me with open arms today. The crisp February air, a stark contrast to Berlin's damp chill, invigorated me as I embarked on my solo journey. While Hans and Sophie are dearly missed, there's a unique thrill in navigating a new city entirely on my own terms. My first day was ambitious, filled with iconic sights and culinary delights, and I'm already captivated by the city's blend of ancient traditions and modern life.

The first stop on my Kyoto itinerary was Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion. As the bus wound its way through the city, I couldn't help but feel a flutter of excitement. I'd seen countless pictures of this iconic temple, but nothing could have prepared me for the sheer magnificence of seeing it in person. Emerging from the bus, I followed the throngs of people towards the entrance, the anticipation building with each step.

The temple was breathtaking. The sun, though gentle, illuminated the gold leaf, making it shimmer against the backdrop of the serene pond. The reflection danced on the water's surface, creating an ethereal scene that felt like stepping into a painting. It was a photographer's dream, and I happily snapped away, trying to capture the magic of the moment.

The gardens surrounding Kinkaku-ji were equally enchanting. Carefully manicured trees and moss-covered stones created a sense of tranquility, inviting visitors to slow down and appreciate the beauty of nature. I wandered along the paths, listening to the gentle murmur of the wind and the soft crunch of gravel under my feet. There was a sense of peace that settled over me, a feeling of being completely present in the moment.

The beauty of Kyoto lies not just in its temples and gardens, but in the sense of serenity it instills in the soul.

Leaving Kinkaku-ji, I made my way to Ryoan-ji, another UNESCO World Heritage site renowned for its enigmatic rock garden. After the dazzling spectacle of the Golden Pavilion, I was curious to experience the understated elegance of Zen Buddhism.

Ryoan-ji's rock garden is a masterpiece of minimalism. Fifteen rocks are arranged in five groups on a bed of meticulously raked white gravel. The garden is enclosed by a low earthen wall, creating a sense of seclusion and contemplation. What makes this garden so intriguing is that, from any vantage point, one of the rocks is always hidden from view. This subtle detail sparks endless interpretations and invites viewers to engage in their own personal reflection.

I sat on the wooden veranda, gazing at the garden, trying to decipher its hidden meaning. Was it a metaphor for life's mysteries? A representation of islands in the sea? Or simply an exercise in abstract beauty? I couldn't be sure, but I found myself drawn into the garden's quiet allure. Time seemed to slow down, and I felt a sense of calm wash over me.

After a morning of temple hopping, my stomach started to rumble. It was time for lunch! I headed to Katsukura in Kyoto Porta, a tonkatsu restaurant recommended by several blogs I had read before leaving Berlin. I was ready for something hearty and comforting after the morning's Zen-like contemplation.

Katsukura didn't disappoint. The restaurant was bustling with locals and tourists alike, all eager to sample their famous deep-fried pork cutlets. I ordered the classic tonkatsu set, and it arrived with a generous portion of crispy, golden-brown pork, shredded cabbage, miso soup, and rice. The tonkatsu was perfectly cooked, the pork tender and juicy, and the breading light and crunchy. I especially enjoyed grinding my own sesame seeds to mix into the tonkatsu sauce – a fun and flavorful touch!

With my appetite satisfied, I decided to indulge in a bit of retail therapy. My next stop was the Kyoto Crafts Store, a treasure trove of traditional Japanese arts and crafts. I wandered through the aisles, admiring the intricate ceramics, delicate textiles, and exquisite lacquerware. It was tempting to buy everything in sight, but I managed to restrain myself, settling on a beautiful silk scarf for Sophie and a handcrafted wooden toy for Hans.

As the afternoon waned, I sought refuge in a different kind of establishment: L'Escamoteur, a quirky bar known for its creative cocktails and whimsical atmosphere. Tucked away in a quiet alley, this bar felt like stepping into another world. The interior was dimly lit, filled with curiosities and vintage paraphernalia, creating a sense of mystery and intrigue.

The bartender, a charming Frenchman, greeted me with a warm smile and offered me a seat at the bar. I ordered one of their signature cocktails, a concoction of local spirits and exotic fruits, served in a whimsical glass. As I sipped my drink, I watched the bartender work his magic, mixing and stirring with flair and precision. The atmosphere was convivial, and I struck up conversations with fellow travelers, sharing stories and laughter.

Before heading back to Hotel Grand Bach Select Kyoto, I enjoyed dinner at Kizahashi, the Japanese restaurant in the hotel. Surrounded by a beautiful Japanese garden, the restaurant offered an authentic atmosphere. I chose a seat by the counter to enjoy the smell of charcoal and conversation with the chef. I opted for a Kaiseki course, savoring each of the eight dishes. The flavors were subtle yet complex, showcasing the freshest seasonal ingredients.

And, as suggested by several articles I'd read, I ended my day with a visit to Kitano Tenmangu Shrine to attend the Baikasai Plum Blossom Festival. The festival was held in honor of Sugawara no Michizane, who loved plums very much. The shrine was filled with the scent of plum blossoms, and I enjoyed sweets with plum blossoms. I also got to see geiko and maiko from the Kamishichiken District serve tea in an outdoor tea ceremony.

As I walked back to my hotel, I reflected on the day's adventures. Kyoto had exceeded all my expectations. The city's beauty, history, and culture had captivated me, and I felt a sense of excitement for what tomorrow would bring. I am particularly looking forward to visiting the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest, Tenryu-ji, and Okochi Sanso Garden. But now, it's time for a well-deserved rest.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore Arashiyama Bamboo Forest, Tenryu-ji Temple, and Okochi Sanso Garden. Good night from Kyoto!
