Whispers of the Past, Sips of the Present

Today was a day of contrasts, a journey through time that started in the depths of the earth and ended with a toast to the present. From exploring ancient caves to wandering among megalithic stones, and finally indulging in a unique gin experience, Serra de São Mamede revealed its many layers. It's amazing how much history and culture can be packed into a single day, and I'm excited to share my experiences with you.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Café Restaurante Realinho - Francisco Realinho & Santos, Lda. in Urra. I decided to try a local favorite, the *galinhada*, a flavorful chicken and rice dish that set me up perfectly for a day of exploration. It’s amazing how a simple meal can give you a real sense of place, and this breakfast definitely did the trick. After breakfast, I set off towards my first destination: the Grutas de Santo António.

Delving into the Earth's Secrets: Grutas de Santo António

The Grutas de Santo António are part of a network of caves formed approximately 180 million years ago. To think that dinosaurs once roamed this very area is humbling! The caves were discovered in 1955 by quarrymen, and opened to the public in 1971, offering a glimpse into a hidden world beneath our feet. Stepping inside, I was immediately struck by the cool, damp air – a welcome respite from the July heat. The formations of stalactites and stalagmites created a surreal, otherworldly atmosphere. I've seen caves before, but there was something particularly magical about these.

The main chamber is vast, stretching 80 meters in length and 50 meters in width, with a height of 43 meters. As I walked along the circular tour path, I was mesmerized by the intricate details of the cave formations. One particular stalagmite, named after Our Lady of Fatima, stood out with its impressive size and shape. The lighting was well-done, highlighting the natural beauty of the cave without being too intrusive. It’s fascinating to think about how these formations have been shaped over millennia by the slow drip of water.

I couldn’t help but wonder about the stories these caves could tell. It felt like stepping back in time, imagining the earth slowly molding these underground cathedrals. Having lived in Berlin for almost a decade now, I sometimes forget the raw, untamed beauty of nature. This experience was a powerful reminder of the wonders that exist beyond the city limits.

The past is never dead. It's not even past. - William Faulkner

After emerging from the cool depths of the Grutas de Santo António, I felt a renewed appreciation for the earth's hidden wonders. It was time to journey further back in time, to a place where ancient stones whispered stories of civilizations long gone.

Whispers of the Ancients: Parque Megalítico dos Coureleiros

My next stop was the Parque Megalítico dos Coureleiros, a megalithic park located about 8 kilometers north of Castelo de Vide. This park is home to several *antas* (dolmens) and menhirs dating back to the 4th and 3rd millennia BC. It's incredible to think that these stones have stood here for over 5,000 years, witnessing the rise and fall of countless generations.

As I walked among these ancient stones, I felt a sense of awe and wonder. The Parque Megalítico dos Coureleiros is divided into four groups of megalithic monuments: Anta I, Anta 2 (also known as Anta Grande dos Coureleiros), Anta 3, and Anta 4. Each *anta* has its own unique characteristics and history. Anta 2, for example, is one of the largest megalithic monuments in the area, with seven standing stones still visible. Anta 3 is believed to have been built during the Neolithic and Chalcolithic periods, while Anta 4 has a polygonal floor and once consisted of seven pillars.

The landscape surrounding the park was beautiful, with cork trees providing shade and a sense of tranquility. I spent several hours exploring the different *antas*, reading the informational plaques, and trying to imagine what life was like for the people who built these monuments. It’s moments like these that make me appreciate my background in cultural anthropology. Connecting with the past in such a tangible way is incredibly rewarding.

I couldn't help but reflect on the enduring power of these ancient sites. They stand as a testament to human ingenuity and resilience, reminding us of our connection to the past. As someone who enjoys sustainable living, I also appreciated the fact that these monuments have been preserved for future generations to enjoy. It's a reminder that we have a responsibility to protect our cultural heritage and natural environment.

A Modern Toast to Tradition: The Gin Library + Outdoor Terrace

After a day of exploring ancient wonders, it was time for a change of pace. I drove to Nisa, eager to experience the local flavors and unwind after my historical adventures. I was ready for dinner at Taberna Facha, known for its traditional Alentejo-style cuisine, but first, I decided to stop by The Gin Library + Outdoor Terrace for a pre-dinner drink.

I had heard about The Gin Library from other travel bloggers, and I was intrigued by the concept. A library dedicated to gin? It sounded like my kind of place! As I stepped inside, I was immediately impressed by the stylish decor and the extensive collection of gins from around the world. The bar had a cozy and inviting atmosphere, with comfortable seating and knowledgeable staff.

I decided to try a local gin, recommended by the bartender, which was infused with botanicals from the Serra de São Mamede Natural Park. It was refreshing and flavorful, a perfect way to end a day of exploring the region. As I sat on the outdoor terrace, sipping my gin and tonic, I watched the sunset over the rolling hills. It was a peaceful and relaxing moment, a chance to reflect on the day's adventures.

The Gin Library was a delightful surprise, a modern twist on tradition that perfectly complemented my day of historical exploration. It’s funny how travel can lead you to unexpected places and experiences. I never would have imagined that I would end my day in a gin library, but I'm so glad I did. It was a unique and memorable experience that I will cherish for years to come.

A Taste of Alentejo: Dinner at Taberna Facha

Finally, it was time for dinner. I made my way to Taberna Facha, a charming restaurant in Portalegre known for its authentic Alentejo cuisine. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with a rustic decor and friendly staff. I was looking forward to trying some of the local specialties.

I started with the *lombinhos ao alhinho*, pork tenderloin with garlic, a traditional Alentejo dish that was bursting with flavor. For my main course, I had the *entrecosto*, a hearty pork rib dish that was cooked to perfection. The portions were generous, and the food was incredibly satisfying. It was exactly what I needed after a long day of exploring.

As I savored each bite, I couldn't help but appreciate the simplicity and authenticity of Alentejo cuisine. The dishes were made with fresh, local ingredients and cooked with love and care. It was a true taste of Portugal, a culinary experience that I will never forget.

After dinner, I decided to skip dessert and head back to my accommodation. I was tired but content, my mind filled with images of ancient caves, megalithic stones, and gin-infused sunsets. It had been a day of contrasts, a journey through time and culture that had left me feeling inspired and rejuvenated.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Judiaria de Castelo de Vide and the Sinagoga de Castelo de Vide, delving deeper into the history of this fascinating region. I’m also looking forward to trying some more local cuisine and exploring the charming town of Castelo de Vide. Until then, *boa noite*!
