Solo Exploration in Serra de São Mamede Natural Park
Day 2: Reaching New Heights and Discovering Hidden Waterfalls in Serra de São Mamede
A day of breathtaking views from Alto da Serra de São Mamede and the serene beauty of Cascata da Cabroeira. Solo travel in Portugal.
Summiting São Mamede and Chasing Waterfalls
Today was all about embracing the heights and hidden gems of Serra de São Mamede Natural Park. I set out early, eager to experience the panoramic views from the highest point in the range and the refreshing embrace of a secluded waterfall. It's days like these that remind me why I crave solo adventures – the freedom to explore at my own pace and truly connect with nature.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at A Adega. Fuelled up with local pastries and strong coffee, I felt ready to tackle the ascent to Alto da Serra de São Mamede. The drive itself was stunning, with winding roads offering glimpses of the park's diverse landscapes. As I climbed higher, the air grew crisper, and the views became increasingly expansive. I was so glad I remembered to pack a light jacket; even in July, the higher altitudes can be a bit breezy.
Reaching Alto da Serra de São Mamede was an exhilarating experience. At 1,025 meters, it's the highest point south of the Tagus River, and the views were simply breathtaking. From the summit, I could see the rolling hills of the Alentejo stretching out before me, dotted with quaint villages and verdant fields. I spent a good hour simply soaking it all in, snapping photos, and journaling my thoughts. It’s moments like these when I truly appreciate the beauty and tranquility of nature, a welcome contrast to the hustle and bustle of Berlin.

The beauty of solo travel lies in the freedom to lose yourself in the moment, to discover hidden treasures at your own pace, and to connect with nature on a deeper level.
After descending from Alto da Serra de São Mamede, my next destination was Cascata da Cabroeira, a hidden waterfall tucked away in the heart of the park. The drive to the trailhead was an adventure in itself, with narrow, winding roads leading through dense forests and past charming, stone-built villages. I even made a quick stop at Be Nature, a local shop I spotted along the way. It was a treasure trove of regional products, from handcrafted soaps to locally sourced honey. I picked up a few small souvenirs for Sophie and Hans, little reminders of my Portuguese adventure. I know Sophie will love the little hand carved wooden bird I picked up for her.

The hike to Cascata da Cabroeira was a bit more challenging than I expected, but the reward was well worth the effort. The trail wound through a lush, green valley, following the course of a small stream. The air was filled with the sound of birdsong and the scent of wildflowers. As I neared the waterfall, the sound of rushing water grew louder, and I knew I was close.
And then, there it was – Cascata da Cabroeira, a cascade of crystal-clear water plunging into a cool, refreshing pool. The waterfall wasn't huge, but its secluded location and natural beauty made it feel like a hidden paradise. I spent the afternoon swimming in the pool, sunbathing on the rocks, and simply enjoying the serenity of the surroundings. It was the perfect way to cool off after the hike and recharge my batteries.
For lunch, I stopped at Sabores Do Norte Alentejo - Empreendimentos Turísticos, Lda. I decided to try the local Alentejo cuisine. The flavors were rich and hearty, a true reflection of the region's culinary heritage. I had a lovely chat with the owner, who shared stories about the local traditions and ingredients. It's these kinds of interactions that make traveling so rewarding – connecting with people and learning about their culture.
In the evening, I treated myself to a delicious dinner at Restaurante O Malagueta in Portalegre. I opted for a traditional Portuguese dish, savoring the flavors of fresh seafood and local wine. The restaurant had a cozy, welcoming atmosphere, and I enjoyed chatting with the friendly staff. I was able to try some local wine which I found to be quite enjoyable. I definitely want to find some in Berlin to bring home. While I was there I did some research on the area and found out that the Serra de São Mamede Natural Park is known for having over 800 species of plants. That is absolutely incredible!

As I reflect on today's adventures, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude and contentment. Serra de São Mamede Natural Park has exceeded all my expectations, offering a perfect blend of natural beauty, cultural experiences, and opportunities for self-discovery. Tomorrow, I plan to explore the Grutas de Santo António and Parque megalítico dos Coureleiros, delving deeper into the region's history and geological wonders. I might even stop by The Gin Library + Outdoor Terrace for a nightcap before heading back to my accommodation. I'm excited to see what new adventures await me in this enchanting corner of Portugal. I'm glad that I didn't forget my travel journal, because I have had a great time writing down my adventures so far. I'm also glad that I brought my camera to capture the beauty of the area.
Before I turn in for the night, I realized I forgot to pack my binoculars and local hiking maps! I will need to make sure I pick those up tomorrow so I can fully appreciate the views and navigate the trails.
Good night from Serra de São Mamede!
