A New Chapter Begins

After months of anticipation, my solo adventure in Parque Natural da Serra de São Mamede has officially begun! Leaving behind the familiar comforts of Berlin and my family, Hans and Sophie, was a little bittersweet, but the allure of Portugal's hidden gem was too strong to resist. This trip marks a significant milestone for me – a chance to fully immerse myself in nature, reconnect with myself, and document my experiences in a way that I hope will inspire others. I'm eager to share every moment of this journey, from the stunning landscapes to the delightful local flavors.

My journey began with a flight from Berlin to Lisbon. Thankfully, the flight was smooth, and I managed to catch up on some reading. From Lisbon, I picked up my rental car, a compact little thing that I hope will be up to the task of navigating the Alentejo roads. The drive to Serra de São Mamede was a treat in itself, the scenery gradually transforming from urban sprawl to rolling hills dotted with cork trees. The air grew noticeably fresher, carrying the scent of wildflowers and distant rain. It was a welcome change from the city air I'm accustomed to in Berlin.

The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

My first official stop was, of course, Parque Natural da Serra de São Mamede itself. The sheer scale of the park is breathtaking. As I stepped out of the car, I was immediately enveloped by a sense of tranquility. The rolling hills, the distant mountains shrouded in a light mist – it was all incredibly picturesque. I pulled out my camera, eager to capture the vastness of the landscape and the unique beauty of this protected area. I spent a good part of the afternoon simply driving through the park, stopping at various viewpoints to soak it all in. It’s amazing how quickly the hustle and bustle of city life fades away when you’re surrounded by such natural beauty. I already feel a sense of peace settling over me.

For breakfast, I decided to try Dom Jardim in Portalegre. It was a delightful start to the day. The cafe had a cozy atmosphere, and the aroma of freshly baked bread and strong coffee filled the air. I opted for a traditional Portuguese pastry and a *galão* (a type of coffee with milk), savoring every bite and sip. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploring. I made a mental note to try and recreate some of these pastries when I get back to Berlin; Sophie would absolutely love them.

Lunch was at Restaurante Varanda do Alentejo in Marvão, and it was an experience I won't soon forget. The restaurant is perched on a hilltop, offering panoramic views of the Alentejo landscape. The view was simply stunning. I ordered a local specialty, a hearty stew made with lamb and seasonal vegetables. The flavors were rich and complex, a testament to the region's culinary heritage. The service was warm and welcoming, making me feel right at home. I savored every bite, taking my time to soak in the ambiance and the breathtaking scenery. I noticed they had vegan options like spaghetti with mushrooms and asparagus which is great to know, as I have some friends who would love this place.

After lunch, I couldn't resist exploring the charming town of Marvão. Perched atop a granite peak, the village is a maze of narrow cobblestone streets, whitewashed houses, and ancient walls. I wandered through the streets, admiring the architecture and soaking in the atmosphere. It felt like stepping back in time. I visited the Marvão Castle, a medieval fortress that offers even more stunning views of the surrounding countryside. It was easy to imagine what life must have been like centuries ago, living within those fortified walls.

As evening approached, I made my way to Portalegre for dinner at Tombalobos. This restaurant came highly recommended, and it certainly lived up to the hype. The ambiance was elegant yet inviting, with soft lighting and rustic décor. I decided to try another local specialty, a dish featuring black pork, which Alentejo is famous for. The pork was cooked to perfection, tender and flavorful, and the accompanying vegetables were fresh and delicious. The wine list was extensive, featuring a wide selection of regional wines. I opted for a full-bodied red, which paired perfectly with my meal. I overheard some other guests praising the service and the Alentejo dishes. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration. I was so engrossed in the experience that I almost forgot to check in with Hans and Sophie! I quickly sent them a message and a few photos, promising to call later.

To cap off the evening, I ventured to Natural Bar for a nightcap. The bar had a relaxed, laid-back vibe, with soft music playing in the background. I ordered a glass of local wine and sat outside, enjoying the cool evening air. It was a perfect opportunity to reflect on the day's experiences and plan for tomorrow. Sipping my wine, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for this opportunity to explore such a beautiful and fascinating region. I also made a mental note to buy some local wine to take back to Berlin; Hans would certainly appreciate that.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore Alto da Serra de São Mamede, the highest point in the park, and visit Cascata da Cabroeira. I'm also hoping to check out Be Nature, a local shop that sells regional products. I’m excited to see what tomorrow brings, and I’m sure it will be another day filled with adventure and discovery.

As I settle in for the night, I can't help but feel a sense of excitement for the days ahead. Serra de São Mamede has already captured my heart with its natural beauty, rich history, and warm hospitality. I look forward to sharing more of my adventures with you as I continue to explore this incredible region.
