A Fond Farewell

As my solo journey through the Serra de São Mamede Natural Park draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the profound connection I’ve forged with this serene landscape. Each day has been a revelation, a gentle unfolding of nature’s beauty that has seeped into my soul. Today, my final day, was a blend of cherished moments and thoughtful goodbyes, solidifying the park's place in my heart.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Mongo Burger Lisboa, a delightful spot I discovered somewhat unexpectedly. While burgers weren't exactly what I envisioned for a farewell breakfast in Portugal, I figured, why not? It's about the experience, after all! After breakfast, I set out to make the most of my remaining hours in the park.

My first stop was the Passadiços do Gameiro. The early morning air was crisp and invigorating as I embarked on the trail. The wooden walkways meandered through a landscape teeming with life, the sounds of birdsong filling the air. The play of light and shadow on the water created a mesmerizing effect, making every step a visual delight. I paused frequently, simply to soak in the tranquility, etching the scene into my memory.

Sometimes, the most profound journeys are those that lead us back to ourselves.

The Passadiços do Gameiro offered a gentle, reflective experience. The walkways are well-maintained and easily navigable, making it perfect for a contemplative stroll. I spent a couple of hours wandering through the area, taking photographs, and simply being present in the moment. The natural beauty of the park was on full display, and I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to witness it.

Next on my itinerary was the Monumento Natural das Pegadas de Dinossáurios – Ourém / Torres Novas. I was excited to see the dinosaur footprints, a tangible link to a prehistoric past. The monument was a bit of a drive from the Passadiços do Gameiro, but the journey was well worth it. As I approached the site, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe. To stand where dinosaurs once roamed was an extraordinary experience, connecting me to the deep history of our planet.

The footprints themselves were remarkably well-preserved, offering a clear glimpse into the lives of these ancient creatures. I spent a considerable amount of time examining the tracks, imagining the immense size and power of the dinosaurs that left them behind. It was a humbling experience, reminding me of the vastness of time and the ever-changing nature of our world. I even picked up a local hiking map, remembering I'd forgotten my binoculars and hiking maps back in Berlin. I made a mental note to be more thorough next time.

For lunch, I decided to try Tasca Do Zé Bébé, a local eatery known for its authentic Portuguese cuisine. I had heard rave reviews about their traditional dishes, and I was eager to sample some of the local flavors. The tasca was cozy and inviting, with a warm, rustic ambiance. The staff were friendly and welcoming, making me feel right at home.

I ordered a hearty plate of migas, a traditional Alentejo dish made with bread, garlic, and pork. The flavors were rich and satisfying, a true taste of Portugal. As I savored each bite, I reflected on my culinary experiences throughout the trip. From simple snacks to elaborate meals, I had enjoyed a diverse range of flavors, each one telling a story about the region and its people.

In the late afternoon, I sought out Cabeças do Reguengo - Turismo Rural, a bar known for its relaxed atmosphere and scenic views. I wanted to unwind and savor my last evening in the park, and this seemed like the perfect place to do so. The bar was nestled amidst rolling hills, offering panoramic vistas of the surrounding landscape. I ordered a glass of local wine and settled in to watch the sunset.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink, I felt a sense of contentment wash over me. I had come to the Serra de São Mamede Natural Park seeking tranquility and connection with nature, and I had found it in abundance. The park had offered me a respite from the stresses of daily life, allowing me to reconnect with myself and the world around me.

Dinner tonight was at Cavalinho, a restaurant in Portalegre I had been looking forward to trying. The restaurant came highly recommended for its traditional Alentejo cuisine, and I was eager to experience it firsthand. The restaurant was charming, with a cozy interior and a welcoming atmosphere. I decided to try the porco preto (black pork), a regional specialty known for its rich flavor and tender texture.

The porco preto was cooked to perfection, melting in my mouth with each bite. The flavors were complex and satisfying, a testament to the quality of the ingredients and the skill of the chef. As I savored my meal, I reflected on the culinary journey I had undertaken throughout my trip. From the hearty stews to the fresh seafood, I had experienced a diverse range of flavors that had tantalized my taste buds and nourished my soul.

As my trip concludes, I find myself contemplating the essence of solo travel. It’s not merely about seeing new places; it’s about the quiet moments of self-discovery, the unhurried pace that allows for deeper connections, and the freedom to follow your own rhythm. This journey has reaffirmed my love for sustainable living and cultural anthropology, enriching my understanding of both the world and myself.

The Serra de São Mamede Natural Park has been more than just a destination; it has been a sanctuary, a place where I have found peace, inspiration, and a renewed sense of purpose. As I prepare to return to Berlin, I carry with me the memories of this incredible journey, knowing that the lessons I have learned and the connections I have made will stay with me long after I have left. Although I’m looking forward to seeing Hans and Sophie, a part of me will always remain here, amidst the rolling hills and tranquil landscapes of this beautiful park.

Tomorrow, I embark on my journey back to Berlin, carrying with me the peace and inspiration I’ve found here. Until next time, Serra de São Mamede!
