Day 8: Summiting Serra da Estrela: A Day of Heights and History
Explore Portugal's highest peak and medieval towers in Serra da Estrela Natural Park, a journey through history and breathtaking views.
A Day Among the Stars
Today’s adventure took me to new heights, both literally and figuratively, as I explored the Serra da Estrela Nature Park and the historic Torre Medieval da Portagem. It was a day filled with stunning vistas, delicious food, and a deep dive into Portugal’s rich heritage. The park's rugged beauty and the tower’s stoic presence created a memorable experience that I’m eager to share.

The day began with a hearty breakfast at Sal e Alho in Portalegre. It's always a treat to start the day with a good meal, and Sal e Alho did not disappoint. I savored the traditional flavors of Alentejo, fueling up for the day's explorations. The restaurant was cozy, with a rustic charm that made me feel right at home. I took my time, enjoying the quiet morning before setting off towards Serra da Estrela. Thinking back to my days in Kirksville, Missouri, I remember how much I loved those small-town diners where everyone knew each other. This place had a similar vibe, warm and welcoming.

Serra da Estrela Nature Park was my first major stop. As the largest mountain range in Portugal, it’s a place of immense natural beauty. The drive up was breathtaking, with panoramic views unfolding at every turn. The air grew crisper as I ascended, and the landscape transformed into a tapestry of green valleys and rocky peaks. Although it's July, the sun shone brightly, making the temperature very pleasant for exploration. I made sure to wear sunscreen, as I had learned my lesson on previous trips!
Reaching the summit, I was greeted by the iconic Torre, the highest point in continental Portugal. At 1,993 meters, the views were simply spectacular. I could see for miles in every direction, the vastness of Portugal stretching out before me. It was a humbling experience, standing atop the country, feeling so small yet so connected to the land. I took a moment to journal, jotting down my thoughts and impressions, trying to capture the essence of the moment.
Sometimes, the greatest adventures are not about the destination, but about the journey and the moments of quiet reflection along the way.
I spent a good hour at the summit, wandering around and taking in the scenery. There were other travelers, of course, but the vastness of the landscape seemed to absorb everyone, creating a sense of peaceful solitude. I imagined what it must be like in the winter when the mountains are covered in snow. I've read that the roads to the summit can be closed due to heavy snow, making a summer visit an even better experience.
After descending from Serra da Estrela, I drove to Torre Medieval da Portagem. This medieval tower, located in the village of Portagem, has a rich history. Built in the 14th century, it served as a toll station for merchants entering Portugal from Castile. I learned that in the 15th century, it was also used to control and tax the entry of Jews expelled from Castile and Aragon. Knowing this history added a layer of depth to my visit, making me reflect on the tower's role in Portugal's past. It's fascinating how a single structure can bear witness to so much history.

The tower itself is a sturdy stone building, a testament to the craftsmanship of the time. While I couldn’t go inside, admiring it from the outside was enough. The surrounding village was charming, with narrow streets and traditional houses. I took a leisurely stroll, soaking in the atmosphere and enjoying the tranquility of the place. It was a stark contrast to the bustling city of Berlin, where I currently live, but I found a sense of peace here that was deeply refreshing.
For lunch, I stopped at Cabanas, a restaurant in Castelo de Vide. I had heard good things about their traditional Portuguese cuisine, and I was eager to try it. The restaurant had a cozy, welcoming atmosphere, and the staff were friendly and attentive. I ordered a local specialty, savoring the flavors and enjoying the relaxed pace of the meal. It was the perfect way to recharge after a morning of exploring.

After lunch, I decided to do some shopping at the Castle of Castelo de Vide. The town itself is a gem, with its medieval castle and well-preserved Jewish quarter. Wandering through the narrow, cobbled streets, I felt like I had stepped back in time. The castle offered panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, and I spent a good hour exploring its walls and towers. I bought a few souvenirs, small reminders of my visit to this charming town. The local shops were filled with artisanal products, from handmade crafts to regional delicacies. I couldn't resist buying some local cheese and wine, planning to enjoy them later in the evening.

Castelo de Vide is known for its well-preserved Jewish quarter, and I made sure to visit the Synagogue. Although it was closed, I was still able to explore the streets and alleyways, imagining what life must have been like for the Jewish community here centuries ago. The town has a rich history, and the Jewish quarter is a testament to Portugal's past. The Fonte de Vila, a 16th-century fountain, was another highlight. I paused to admire its architecture and enjoy the peaceful setting.
As the day drew to a close, I made my way to Regata for dinner. This restaurant, also in Castelo de Vide, had been recommended to me by a local, and I was excited to try it. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the menu featured a variety of traditional Alentejo dishes. I ordered another local specialty, savoring the flavors and enjoying the ambiance of the restaurant. The staff were friendly and attentive, making me feel right at home. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and discovery.

The food had been delicious, the sights were stunning, and the people were warm and welcoming. It was a day I would not soon forget.
Tomorrow marks the final day of my solo adventure. I plan to visit the Passadiços do Gameiro and the Monumento Natural das Pegadas de Dinossáurios near Ourém and Torres Novas. I’m looking forward to more exploration and discovery before heading back to Berlin. I’m also planning to stop by Cabeças do Reguengo - Turismo Rural for a drink, to celebrate the end of a wonderful trip.
As I prepare for my final day, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude for the experiences I've had and the memories I've made. This solo adventure has been a journey of self-discovery, a chance to connect with nature and history, and a reminder of the beauty and richness of the world around us.
