Echoes of the Eagles
Today was a symphony of nature's grandeur, a day where the rugged beauty of Portugal's Serra de São Mamede Natural Park truly captivated my senses. From the towering cliffs echoing with the cries of eagles to the tranquil riverside paths, it was an exploration that resonated deeply with my love for the outdoors. With each step, I felt a stronger connection to this land, a serene escape from the bustling streets of Berlin that I often find myself longing for.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Olha a Tosta in Nisa. I opted for the Tosta de Abacate. Pão de Centeio com Ovo e... (Rye Bread with Egg and Avocado Toast), a simple yet satisfying start to fuel my explorations. It reminded me of the simple breakfasts Hans and I enjoy on Sundays back in Berlin, though this one came with a distinct Portuguese flair. With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I set off to explore the first natural wonder on my list: the Portas do Ródão Natural Monument.

The drive to Portas do Ródão was scenic, with rolling hills and quaint villages dotting the landscape. As I approached the monument, the landscape dramatically transformed. The Tagus River, carving its way through towering quartzite cliffs, created a breathtaking spectacle. It was easy to see why this place is called the 'Gates of Ródão' – the sheer scale of the cliffs felt like entering another world. I parked the car and took a moment to simply stand and absorb the view. The sheer magnitude of the landscape was humbling.
I decided to take a boat tour to fully appreciate the monument. Gliding along the Tagus, I gazed up at the imposing cliffs, marveling at the geological forces that had shaped them over millennia. Our guide shared fascinating stories about the region's history and the diverse wildlife that calls it home. I learned that the cliffs are a nesting site for griffon vultures, and as if on cue, several of these majestic birds soared overhead, their impressive wingspans casting shadows on the water. It was a truly awe-inspiring sight.
The grandeur of nature is a constant reminder of the delicate balance that sustains life, urging us to protect and cherish our planet.
After the boat tour, I felt a pang of hunger and headed to A Tasquinha in Nisa for lunch. This charming little restaurant offered a taste of authentic Alentejo cuisine. I indulged in a hearty dish of migas, a traditional bread-based dish flavored with garlic, olive oil, and various meats. It was the perfect comfort food after a morning spent exploring the great outdoors. As I savored each bite, I watched locals gather and chat, a scene that reminded me of the sense of community I sometimes miss in Berlin.
With renewed energy, I set off for my afternoon adventure: the Trilho da Barca d'Amieira - Passadiços de Nisa.

This scenic trail follows the banks of the Tagus River, offering stunning views and a chance to immerse myself in the region's natural beauty. The trail is known for its unique 'passadiços,' or wooden walkways, that extend over the water, providing a unique perspective of the river and its surroundings.
As I started my hike, the sun was high in the sky, casting a warm glow on the landscape. The trail was relatively easy, making it a pleasant walk. The sounds of birdsong and the gentle lapping of the river accompanied me as I strolled along the path. I paused at several viewpoints to take in the scenery, each offering a different angle of the Tagus and the surrounding hills.
One of the highlights of the trail was the Ponte Pedonal Suspensa, a rope bridge suspended over the river. I admit, I hesitated for a moment before stepping onto the bridge. It swayed gently with each step, and the drop below was a little unnerving. But I took a deep breath and continued, determined to conquer my slight fear of heights. The view from the middle of the bridge was worth the effort – a panoramic vista of the river and the lush vegetation on either side. I felt a sense of accomplishment as I reached the other side, a small victory that reminded me of the importance of pushing myself beyond my comfort zone.
The trail also featured a 'sky walk,' a section of the path where the floor is made of glass, offering a thrilling view of the river below. While I am not particularly fond of heights, I braved the sky walk, carefully placing each foot on the glass panels. It was a unique and slightly unsettling experience, but one that I wouldn't have missed. I could see the river flowing beneath my feet, a perspective that gave me a new appreciation for the power and beauty of nature.
As the sun began to set, casting a golden hue on the landscape, I completed my hike and made my way back to Nisa. I decided to treat myself to dinner at Cantinho do Pescador, a local restaurant known for its fresh seafood.

I ordered grilled dourada (sea bream), a simple yet flavorful dish that perfectly captured the taste of Portugal. The fish was cooked to perfection, and the accompanying vegetables were fresh and delicious. It was the perfect way to end a day spent exploring the region's natural wonders.
After dinner, I decided to unwind at O Castelo - Café Lounge in Nisa.

It was the perfect spot to relax and reflect on the day's adventures. I ordered a glass of local wine and sat outside, enjoying the cool evening breeze. The café had a cozy and inviting atmosphere, and I felt a sense of contentment as I watched the locals go about their evening routines.
Tomorrow, I plan to explore the Ermida de São Mamede and the Caleiras da Escusa / Fornos de Cal da Escusa, further immersing myself in the history and natural beauty of this region. I am also considering a visit to Marvão Adventure, a local shop that offers outdoor gear and guided tours. It would be a great opportunity to learn more about the area and perhaps discover some hidden gems. I am looking forward to another day of exploration and adventure in Serra de São Mamede Natural Park.
As I sipped my wine, I thought about how much I appreciate these solo trips. They allow me to disconnect from the stresses of everyday life and reconnect with myself and nature. It's a chance to recharge my batteries, gather my thoughts, and gain new perspectives. And as much as I love Berlin, I know that I need these escapes to maintain my sense of balance and well-being. The experiences I have here will undoubtedly find their way into my teaching, enriching my lessons with firsthand accounts of culture and nature. It's these moments that make life truly fulfilling.
With a final sip of wine, I bid farewell to Nisa and made my way back to my accommodation, my heart full of gratitude for the day's experiences. The Serra de São Mamede Natural Park had once again worked its magic, leaving me refreshed, inspired, and eager for whatever adventures tomorrow may bring.
