Echoes of the Past, Tastes of Today

Today was a day of stepping back in time and savoring the present. Serra de São Mamede Natural Park continued to reveal its layers, offering glimpses into both its ancient industrial past and its vibrant culinary scene. It's amazing how much history and culture can be packed into a single day, and I'm so grateful to be experiencing it all.

My day began, as most do, with a hearty breakfast at Carlos Caeiro. The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong coffee filled the air, setting the perfect tone for the day ahead. I enjoyed a simple yet satisfying meal of toast with local cheese and a strong café au lait, fueling up for a day of exploration. It's funny, I never used to be a big coffee drinker back in Kirksville, but living in Berlin and traveling through Europe has definitely changed that! Hans would be proud of my newfound appreciation for a good cup of coffee.

First on my itinerary was the Ermida de São Mamede. The drive there was stunning, with rolling hills and cork trees lining the narrow roads. As I approached the chapel, I was struck by its serene setting. Perched on a small plateau, the Ermida offered panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The chapel itself, dating back to the 16th century, exuded a sense of history and tranquility. The simple architecture and whitewashed walls were a testament to its enduring presence. I spent some time wandering around the grounds, taking in the views and reflecting on the generations of people who had come to this place for solace and contemplation.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the quietest places.

After soaking in the peaceful atmosphere of the Ermida, I set off to explore the Caleiras da Escusa, also known as Fornos de Cal da Escusa. These ancient Roman lime kilns are a testament to the region's industrial past. As I arrived, I was immediately struck by the scale of the site. Nineteen kilns, nine of them grouped closely together, dotted the landscape. These structures, classified as a National Monument, were used to transform limestone from the Serra into lime, a crucial material for construction. Walking among the kilns, I couldn't help but imagine the workers who toiled here centuries ago, their labor shaping the very landscape I was now exploring. It was a fascinating glimpse into the ingenuity and resourcefulness of the Roman civilization.

The Caleiras da Escusa offered a stark contrast to the peacefulness of the Ermida. Where the chapel was a place of quiet reflection, the kilns were a reminder of the industry and labor that had shaped this region. It was a powerful juxtaposition, highlighting the diverse layers of history embedded in the Serra de São Mamede Natural Park. I learned that these kilns played a significant role in the region's economy until they were deactivated in the 1960s, marking the end of a centuries-old tradition.

For lunch, I decided to try Restaurante O Cantinho do Pica-Pau. The restaurant was bustling with locals, always a good sign. I ordered a traditional Alentejo dish, *porco preto* (black pork), which was cooked to perfection and bursting with flavor. The atmosphere was lively and welcoming, and I enjoyed chatting with the friendly staff about the local cuisine. It’s these small interactions that really make a trip memorable. Back in Berlin, Hans and I love trying new restaurants, but there's something special about experiencing authentic cuisine in its place of origin.

After lunch, I made a quick stop at Marvão Adventure, a local shop that specializes in outdoor gear and regional products. I was hoping to find a detailed hiking map, as I realized I had forgotten to pack my own. While they didn't have the exact map I was looking for, I ended up purchasing a beautiful handcrafted walking stick made from local wood. It felt like a perfect memento of my time in the Serra de São Mamede Natural Park, and I knew it would come in handy for future hikes.

As the day drew to a close, I headed to Snack Bar Restaurante Boavista for dinner. The restaurant was situated in a charming location, with outdoor seating overlooking the town. I ordered a simple meal of grilled fish and vegetables, savoring the fresh flavors and the warm evening air. It was a perfect way to end a day of exploration and discovery.

Reflecting on the day, I was struck by the diversity of experiences the Serra de São Mamede Natural Park had offered. From the serene beauty of the Ermida de São Mamede to the industrial history of the Caleiras da Escusa and the culinary delights of the local restaurants, each moment had been a unique and enriching experience. This solo trip is turning out to be exactly what I needed – a chance to disconnect from the everyday and reconnect with myself and the world around me.

As I prepare for tomorrow, I'm excited to explore the Mira de Aire Cave and the Estrada Romana do Alqueidão da Serra. It sounds like another day filled with history and natural beauty, and I can't wait to see what awaits me. I might even stop by Sem Stress for a drink in the evening. I also need to remember to call Sophie; I promised her I would tell her all about my adventures.

I'm also starting to think about the end of my trip. I fly back to Berlin on July 23rd, and while I'm looking forward to seeing Hans and Sophie, I know I'll miss the peace and tranquility of the Serra de São Mamede Natural Park. Maybe we can plan a family trip here next summer. I think they would both love it.

For now, though, I'm content to savor the remaining days of my solo adventure, soaking in the beauty and history of this remarkable place. I'm learning so much about myself and the world around me, and I'm grateful for every moment.
