Kyoto's Charms: Temples, Trains, and Treasures

Today was a day of contrasts, blending the serenity of ancient temples with the excitement of railway history and the allure of modern shopping. Hans and I explored some of Kyoto's most captivating spots, creating memories that I know we'll cherish long after we've returned to Berlin. It was a day of discovery, and I'm so excited to share it all.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Hyoto Shijo Karasuma. Since our hotel, TSUGU Kyoto Sanjo by THE SHARE HOTELS, doesn't offer breakfast on-site, we ventured out to this nearby gem. I opted for a traditional Japanese breakfast set, which included grilled fish, miso soup, and perfectly steamed rice. Hans, ever the coffee enthusiast, went for the Western-style breakfast with a strong brew. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration.

Our first stop was Higashiyama Jisho-ji, also known as the Silver Pavilion. The temple's serene atmosphere immediately washed over us. The meticulously maintained gardens, with their carefully raked sand and moss, were a sight to behold. We strolled along the Philosopher's Path, a peaceful walkway that meanders alongside a canal. The air was crisp, and the sounds of nature filled the air, creating a truly meditative experience. The Silver Pavilion itself, while not as ostentatious as its golden counterpart, exuded a quiet elegance that I found incredibly appealing.

Sometimes, the greatest beauty lies not in extravagance, but in the subtle details that reveal a deeper sense of peace and harmony.

Next on our itinerary was Nanzen-ji Temple. This expansive Zen temple is one of the most important in Japan, and I could immediately see why. The massive Sanmon entrance gate was awe-inspiring, towering over the treetops. We paid a small fee to climb to the top of the gate, and the panoramic view of Kyoto was simply breathtaking. The Hojo, the former head priest's residence, featured a stunning rock garden, its carefully placed stones said to resemble tigers crossing through water. But perhaps the most unexpected sight was the large brick aqueduct that cut through the temple grounds. Built during the Meiji Period, it's a testament to Kyoto's blend of ancient traditions and modern engineering. Hans, ever the history buff, was fascinated by the aqueduct's story, learning that it was part of a canal system designed to carry water and goods between Kyoto and Lake Biwa.

After immersing ourselves in the tranquility of the temples, we decided to switch gears and visit the Kyoto Railway Museum. As someone who grew up far from trains, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this museum. It was fascinating to see the evolution of Japan's railway system, from the early steam locomotives to the sleek, modern bullet trains. We explored the various exhibits, learning about the history of Japanese railway engineering and design. There was even a simulator where you could experience what it's like to be a train conductor! It was an unexpected delight, and I found myself gaining a newfound appreciation for the importance of trains in Japanese culture. Hans, with his engineering background, was in his element, poring over the technical details of each locomotive and marveling at the ingenuity of the designs.

By late afternoon, we were ready for a bit of retail therapy, so we headed to mina Kyoto, a shopping complex in the Nakagyo Ward. This modern mall is home to a variety of stores, including Uniqlo, GU, and Loft. I was on the hunt for some unique souvenirs, and mina Kyoto didn't disappoint. I found a beautiful silk scarf with a traditional Japanese design, perfect for reminding me of our trip whenever I wear it back in Berlin. We also browsed the Loft store, marveling at the quirky and innovative Japanese homewares and stationery. It was a fun and vibrant contrast to the serene temples we had visited earlier in the day. I even picked up a few small gifts for friends back home, knowing they'd appreciate a taste of Japanese design.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Yasakadori Enraku for lunch. Tucked away behind Kenninji Temple, this intimate restaurant offered a serene escape from the bustling city. We settled into a private room and prepared to indulge in their specialty: oden. The oden was exquisite, the broth light yet deeply flavorful, infused with the essence of seasonal ingredients. Each ingredient, from the daikon radish to the konjac, was perfectly cooked and bursting with flavor. It was a truly authentic Kyoto dining experience, and I savored every bite. Hans, who had never tried oden before, was immediately converted, declaring it one of his favorite dishes of the trip.

For dinner, we had reservations at Nishikawa, a two-Michelin-starred restaurant known for its exquisite kaiseki cuisine. From the moment we stepped inside, we were enveloped in an atmosphere of elegance and grace. The minimalist design, adorned with seasonal artwork, created a sense of tranquility. The service was impeccable, each dish presented with meticulous care and attention to detail. The kaiseki meal was a culinary journey, a symphony of flavors and textures that showcased the best of Kyoto's seasonal ingredients. From the delicate sashimi to the perfectly grilled fish, each course was a work of art. The chef's innovative use of traditional techniques and modern sensibilities was truly impressive. Hans and I were both captivated by the artistry and precision of the meal, agreeing that it was one of the most memorable dining experiences of our lives.

As we walked back to our hotel, the city lights twinkling around us, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the incredible day we had experienced. Kyoto had once again exceeded my expectations, offering a perfect blend of ancient traditions and modern delights. I'm already looking forward to tomorrow, when we plan to explore Ryoan-ji, Daitoku-ji Temple, and Kitano Tenmangu Shrine. And in the evening, perhaps we'll unwind with a drink at Kyoto Star Bar. But for now, I'm content to savor the memories of this day, the temples, the trains, and the treasures that make Kyoto such a special place. Good night from Kyoto!

Oh, and I almost forgot! I did read that there is a Ryokuoshoku shakai concert happening tonight at the Rohm Theatre Kyoto. I am not familiar with them, but it's great to know that there are always contemporary cultural events happening alongside the traditional ones! I'll try to keep an eye out for other events during our stay.

As for tomorrow, I think I'll remember to bring that travel umbrella I forgot to pack. You never know when you might need it, especially with Kyoto's unpredictable weather. And maybe an extra memory card for my camera—I'm sure I'll be taking plenty more photos!
