A Day of Serenity and Silk in Kyoto

Today, Hans and I embarked on a journey through Kyoto's quieter corners, seeking out the temples and traditions that whisper stories of the past. It was a day of unexpected beauty, a blend of spiritual reflection and artistic discovery that left us both feeling incredibly enriched. From vibrant maple leaves to delicate silk patterns, Kyoto unveiled its secrets one precious moment at a time.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Mezopotamia Kebab House. I know, I know, it sounds a bit out of place in Japan, but after days of traditional Japanese fare, we were both craving something a little different. And let me tell you, it hit the spot! Fuelled and ready, we set off for Eikando Temple.

Eikando Temple is renowned for its stunning autumn foliage, but even in mid-April, it was breathtaking. The fresh green leaves of the maple trees created a vibrant canopy overhead, dappling the sunlight as we wandered through the temple grounds. The Hojo Pond reflected the surrounding trees, creating a mesmerizing mirror image of nature's beauty. We spent a good hour simply strolling, taking in the peaceful atmosphere, and admiring the unique statue of the Amida Buddha looking over his shoulder. It’s said that this is to show the Buddha listening to the people. I found myself pondering the idea of always being mindful of others, a gentle reminder in such a serene setting.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the quietest corners.

Next on our itinerary was the Kyoto Shibori Museum.

Now, I'll admit, I didn't know much about shibori before today, but I was instantly captivated by this ancient Japanese dyeing technique. The museum showcased a stunning collection of textiles, each one a testament to the artistry and skill of the artisans. We learned about the various methods of resist dyeing, from intricate stitching to elaborate binding, and the way each technique creates unique patterns and textures. There was even a demonstration where we could try our hand at creating our own shibori patterns. Mine was… abstract, to say the least, but it was a fun and educational experience.

After immersing ourselves in the world of textiles, our stomachs started to rumble, so we headed to Sakuragawa for lunch.

This charming little restaurant served up some of the most delicious and authentic Japanese cuisine we've had so far on our trip. I opted for the tempura udon, while Hans chose the katsudon. Every bite was a burst of flavor, a perfect blend of savory and sweet. It was the ideal midday pick-me-up.

With renewed energy, we made our way to Kodaiji Temple.

This temple, founded in 1606 by the widow of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, one of Japan's most important historical figures, was a true highlight of the day. The temple complex is a beautiful example of Zen garden design, with meticulously raked gravel, carefully placed stones, and lush greenery. We explored the various halls and gardens, each one offering a unique perspective and a sense of tranquility. The bamboo grove was particularly enchanting, the tall stalks swaying gently in the breeze, creating a soothing rustling sound. I felt a sense of peace wash over me as we walked through this serene space, a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Before dinner, we decided to pop into Mumokuteki goods & wears Kyoto.

It was a delightful little shop filled with unique and ethically sourced crafts, clothing, and homewares. I picked up a beautiful hand-painted ceramic bowl as a souvenir, while Hans found a stylish scarf made from organic cotton. It's always nice to support local artisans and find something special to remember our travels by.

For dinner, we treated ourselves to a meal at Premium Pound Gion.

This restaurant is known for its exquisite wagyu beef, and it certainly lived up to its reputation. The meat was incredibly tender and flavorful, melting in our mouths with every bite. It was a truly indulgent experience, and the perfect way to end our day of cultural exploration.

I reflected on the day's adventures. We had explored temples, learned about traditional crafts, and indulged in delicious food. But more than that, we had connected with the spirit of Kyoto, finding moments of peace and beauty in the midst of the city's vibrant energy. I'm so grateful for these experiences, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings. We are planning to visit Shimogamo Shrine, Kibune Shrine, and Kurama-dera Temple. I am also looking forward to visiting Bar K6 for a nightcap.

Tomorrow, we're venturing further afield, heading to Shimogamo Shrine, Kibune Shrine, and Kurama-dera Temple. I've heard that Kibune is particularly stunning, with its picturesque setting along the Kibune River. I'm also excited to try Jiki Miyazawa for lunch – I've read rave reviews about their traditional Kyoto cuisine. And to cap off the day, we're planning a visit to Bar K6, a renowned cocktail bar known for its creative drinks and sophisticated atmosphere. It sounds like another day filled with adventure and discovery, and I can't wait to share it with you all!

As I sit here in our cozy hotel room, the gentle hum of the city outside, I'm reminded of why I love to travel. It's not just about seeing new places, but about experiencing new things, connecting with different cultures, and creating memories that will last a lifetime. And it's even better when I can share these experiences with my wonderful husband, Hans. Goodnight from Kyoto!
