A Cultural Journey Through Kyoto with My Husband
Day 4: Lost in the Bamboo: A Day of Serenity in Arashiyama
Journey through Arashiyama's enchanting bamboo forest, savor local flavors, and find peace in Kyoto's serene landscapes.
Whispers of the Bamboo Forest
Today, Hans and I ventured into the heart of Arashiyama, a district on the outskirts of Kyoto renowned for its natural beauty and tranquil atmosphere. It was a day filled with the soothing rustling of bamboo, the rich history of ancient temples, and the delightful tastes of local cuisine. Leaving behind the familiar streets of Kyoto, we immersed ourselves in a world where nature and culture intertwine, creating an unforgettable experience.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Anzukko. I had read so much about their gyoza, and I was eager to try them. The restaurant was small and cozy, tucked away in a quiet corner of the city. The limited seating made the place feel intimate and exclusive, which I adored. The gyoza were simply divine. Each piece was perfectly crisped on the bottom, with a juicy and flavorful filling. It was the perfect way to start our day of exploration.

The best journeys are those that lead us not only to new places, but also to new perspectives.
With our appetites satisfied, we made our way towards Arashiyama. The train ride itself was an experience, offering glimpses of the Japanese countryside as we sped along the tracks. Upon arriving in Arashiyama, we were immediately struck by the area's natural beauty. Lush green mountains rose in the distance, and the air was fresh and clean. I could already feel the stress of Berlin melting away.
Our first stop was the famed Arashiyama Bamboo Grove. As we stepped into the grove, we were enveloped by towering stalks of bamboo that swayed gently in the breeze. The sunlight filtered through the canopy, casting dappled shadows on the path below. It was an ethereal and almost otherworldly experience. I felt a sense of peace and tranquility wash over me as we walked deeper into the grove. Hans, ever the photographer, was in his element, snapping photos from every angle. I, too, couldn’t resist capturing the beauty of this place.

From the Bamboo Grove, we strolled to Tenryu-ji Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This temple is not only historically significant but also boasts a stunning garden. The Sogen Garden, designed by Muso Soseki, is a masterpiece of landscape architecture. A central pond is surrounded by meticulously arranged rocks, pine trees, and the forested Arashiyama mountains. It was a feast for the eyes, and I found myself lost in contemplation as I gazed upon its beauty.

Learning about the history of Tenryu-ji was also fascinating. Built in 1339 by Shogun Ashikaga Takauji to honor Emperor Go-Daigo, the temple has survived numerous fires and wars. The fact that the garden has remained largely unchanged for centuries is a testament to the enduring beauty of Japanese design.
After immersing ourselves in the serene atmosphere of Tenryu-ji, it was time for lunch. We had made reservations at Nakamura, a restaurant renowned for its traditional Japanese cuisine. The restaurant itself was an oasis of calm, with private rooms overlooking a meticulously manicured garden. We opted for the Kaiseki lunch, a multi-course meal that showcased the best of seasonal ingredients.

Each dish was a work of art, both visually and gastronomically. From the delicate sashimi to the flavorful simmered vegetables, every bite was an explosion of taste. The presentation was impeccable, with each course carefully arranged on exquisite ceramic dishes. It was a culinary experience that engaged all of our senses.
As we savored each course, I couldn't help but reflect on the similarities and differences between Japanese and German cuisine. While both cultures place a high value on quality ingredients and meticulous preparation, the emphasis on simplicity and natural flavors in Japanese cuisine was particularly striking. It was a refreshing contrast to the often heavier and richer dishes of German cuisine.
With our bellies full and our spirits lifted, we decided to explore Arashiyama further. We strolled along the Katsura River, watching as boats glided peacefully along the water. The Togetsukyo Bridge, a landmark of Arashiyama, provided a stunning backdrop for photos. We even considered visiting the Iwatayama Monkey Park, but decided against it, opting instead for a leisurely walk through the town.
As the sun began to set, we found ourselves drawn to a quaint little bar called The Common One Bar Kyoto. I had read about it online, and it sounded like the perfect place to unwind after a day of sightseeing. The bar was hidden away in a quiet alley, and its entrance was discreet and unassuming. Inside, we were greeted by a cozy and intimate atmosphere. The décor was a blend of traditional and modern, with tatami mats and a tea room creating a unique and inviting space.

We settled into a corner and ordered cocktails. I opted for a brandy-based concoction, while Hans chose a local sake. The bartender was a master of his craft, carefully measuring and mixing ingredients with precision and skill. Our drinks were not only delicious but also beautifully presented.
As we sipped our drinks, we chatted about our day in Arashiyama. We both agreed that it had been a truly special experience. The natural beauty of the bamboo grove and the Tenryu-ji Temple, combined with the culinary delights of Nakamura and the cozy ambiance of The Common One Bar Kyoto, had created a day that we would cherish forever.
Looking ahead to tomorrow, we plan to explore more of Kyoto's cultural treasures, including the Kyoto Imperial Palace, Heian Shrine, and the Philosopher's Path. I’m also looking forward to a bit of shopping at Kyoto LOFT. I can't wait to see what new adventures await us.
