Artistic Exploration on Naoshima Island
Day 9: Art, Baths, and Bites: A Perfect Farewell to Naoshima
Exploring Naoshima's Art House Project, enjoying a traditional bath, and savoring local cuisine on our final day.
Island Farewell
As our Naoshima adventure draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible blend of art, culture, and natural beauty we've experienced. Today was all about soaking up the last moments of this unique island, from exploring the Art House Project to indulging in some local flavors. It was a bittersweet day, knowing we'd soon be leaving, but also filled with the joy of discovery and the satisfaction of a trip well-traveled.
Our final day on Naoshima began with a hearty breakfast at maimai. I opted for the Naoshima Burger, a local specialty featuring fried hamachi (young yellowtail) with tartar sauce, while Hans enjoyed a classic Japanese breakfast set. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploring.
With renewed energy, we headed to the Art House Project in the Honmura district. This project transforms abandoned houses, temples, and shrines into captivating art installations. It’s such a unique concept, weaving art into the fabric of daily life. We started with Kadoya, the first house in the project.

Kadoya was a mesmerizing blend of traditional architecture and contemporary art. The use of water and light to create immersive experiences was particularly striking. Tatsuo Miyajima's 'Sea of Time '98' was a highlight, with its LED displays set in a pool of water, the numbers counting down at different speeds. It was a poignant reflection on time and existence.
Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.
Next, we wandered over to George Rickey’s 'Three Squares Vertical Diagonal, 1972-82'. This kinetic sculpture is set against the backdrop of the island's stunning coastal scenery. The gentle breeze caused the squares to sway, creating a mesmerizing dance between art and nature. Hans, ever the engineer, was fascinated by the mechanics of it all. I just enjoyed the peaceful rhythm of the sculpture.

Our artistic journey culminated at the Naoshima Public Bath 'I Love Yu'. Designed by Shinro Ohtake, the same artist behind 'Haisha' in the Art House Project, this bathhouse is a vibrant explosion of color and creativity. It's a fully functional public bathhouse, or *sento*, where you can actually bathe in the artwork.

The exterior is adorned with colorful mosaics, a giant elephant statue, and all sorts of quirky details. Inside, the bathing area is equally whimsical, with intricate designs covering every surface. It was such a fun and unique experience, soaking in the warm water surrounded by art. It felt like a true immersion into Naoshima's artistic spirit.
For lunch, we stopped at Raumen Tsumu, a local ramen shop. I had heard great things about their spicy curry ramen, and it did not disappoint. The broth was rich and flavorful, with just the right amount of heat. Hans opted for the seafood ramen set, which came with a side of karaage. It was a cozy and comforting meal, perfect for a relaxed afternoon.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Okonomiyaki Umikko for dinner. This family-run restaurant is known for its savory okonomiyaki, a Japanese pancake filled with various ingredients. We ordered the Umikko Special, which included pork, shrimp, and vegetables. It was cooked right in front of us on a teppan grill, adding to the interactive dining experience. The okonomiyaki was delicious, and the atmosphere was warm and welcoming.

Our evening concluded with a quiet drink at One Rest. This place offers a relaxing atmosphere to unwind after a day of sightseeing. Sipping on local beers, we reminisced about our favorite moments on Naoshima. It was the perfect way to say goodbye to this magical island.
