First Impressions of Ronda
Our adventure in the Ronda Valley has officially begun, and what a start it has been! Today was all about immersing ourselves in the heart of Ronda, a city perched dramatically atop cliffs and steeped in history. From exploring the ancient streets to savoring the local cuisine, every moment felt like stepping into a postcard. The air is fresh, the views are stunning, and the spirit of Andalusia is palpable. I can already tell this is going to be an unforgettable journey with Hans by my side.
Our journey from Berlin to Málaga was smooth, and the drive to Ronda was nothing short of spectacular. The Andalusian countryside unfolded before us like a vibrant tapestry, with rolling hills, olive groves, and charming white-washed villages dotting the landscape. I couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement building with each passing mile. It’s moments like these that remind me why I love to travel, trading the familiar for the unknown and embracing the beauty of the world. We even managed to find our hotel, Hermanos Macías Hotel, without too much trouble. While not the flashiest, it’s perfectly located and has that authentic Spanish feel that I adore. After quickly settling in, it was time to explore!

Wandering Through Ronda's Old Town
Our first stop was the Ronda Old Town Casco Antiguo. As we stepped through the ancient city gates, it felt like stepping back in time. The narrow, winding streets were lined with historic buildings, each telling a story of the city's rich past. The architecture was a beautiful blend of Moorish and Spanish influences, with intricate details and charming balconies overflowing with flowers. I couldn't resist snapping photos at every turn, trying to capture the essence of this enchanting place. Hans, ever the history buff, was in his element, pointing out architectural details and sharing snippets of Ronda's fascinating history. We wandered aimlessly, soaking in the atmosphere and discovering hidden squares and quaint shops.

One of the highlights was stumbling upon a small artisan shop selling handmade ceramics. I couldn't resist buying a beautiful hand-painted bowl as a souvenir. Supporting local artisans is something I always try to do when traveling; it feels good to bring home a piece of the local culture and know that you're helping to support the community. As we continued our exploration, the aroma of orange blossoms filled the air, adding to the magical ambiance. It was the perfect sensory experience, a reminder of why I love exploring new places.
Breakfast at Restaurante Abades Ronda
Before diving deeper into our exploration, we stopped for breakfast at Restaurante Abades Ronda. The restaurant is known for its traditional Andalusian cuisine and stunning views of the El Tajo gorge. I opted for a classic tostada con tomate y aceite de oliva, a simple yet delicious breakfast of toasted bread with fresh tomato and olive oil. Hans, of course, went for something a bit more substantial, ordering the Iberian ham. Sipping on strong Spanish coffee while gazing out at the breathtaking scenery was the perfect way to start our day. It's amazing how a simple meal can become a cherished memory when enjoyed in such a beautiful setting. The menu featured a delightful array of options, from Iberian ham to local cheeses, providing a perfect start to our culinary journey.

The Majestic Puente Nuevo Viewpoint
Next on our list was the iconic Puente Nuevo Viewpoint. This bridge is not just a bridge; it's a symbol of Ronda, and the views from the viewpoint were nothing short of spectacular. As we approached the viewpoint, the sheer scale of the bridge took my breath away. It stands tall and proud, connecting the old and new parts of Ronda, with the El Tajo gorge stretching out below. The views of the surrounding countryside were equally impressive, with rolling hills and dramatic cliffs as far as the eye could see.

Ronda's Puente Nuevo isn't just a bridge; it's a breathtaking testament to human ingenuity harmonizing with nature's grandeur.
We spent a good hour at the viewpoint, taking photos and simply soaking in the beauty of the surroundings. I couldn't help but marvel at the engineering feat of the bridge, completed in 1793 after 42 years of construction. It's a testament to human ingenuity and a reminder of the rich history of this place. Apparently, there's even a small chamber in the bridge that was once used as a prison. I made a mental note to check that out later in the trip.
Exploring El Tajo Canyon
After admiring the view from above, we decided to venture down into El Tajo Canyon. The hike down was a bit challenging, but the views from the bottom were well worth the effort. As we descended, the scale of the gorge became even more apparent. The towering cliffs loomed above us, creating a sense of awe and wonder. The path was well-worn, and we passed several other hikers along the way, all eager to experience the beauty of the canyon.

At the bottom, we found a spot by the Guadalevín River and simply sat for a while, listening to the sound of the water and taking in the scenery. It was a peaceful and serene escape from the hustle and bustle of the city above. I could see why this place has been a source of inspiration for artists and writers for centuries. The El Tajo gorge is up to 120 meters deep and 68 meters wide, formed by the erosion of the river over millennia. There are even remains of old water mills that once harnessed the river's power.
Lunch at Restaurante Azahar
By this point, we had worked up quite an appetite, so we headed to Restaurante Azahar for lunch. This restaurant came highly recommended, known for its modern take on traditional Andalusian cuisine. The decor was bright and airy, with a touch of rustic charm, and the atmosphere was relaxed and inviting. We started with some tapas, including patatas bravas and gambas al ajillo, both bursting with flavor. For our main courses, I opted for the grilled sea bass, while Hans went for the Iberian pork. The food was delicious, and the service was excellent. It was the perfect spot to refuel and recharge before continuing our exploration. There seem to be multiple restaurants with the name Azahar, and it seems that this one offers a modern take on Spanish cuisine.

Evening Tapas at Entre Vinos
As the day drew to a close, we decided to experience Ronda's tapas scene. We found ourselves at Entre Vinos, a cozy wine bar known for its local Ronda wines and lively atmosphere. This place was a gem! Tucked away on a quiet side street, it had a warm and inviting vibe. We sampled a variety of tapas, from cured Iberian ham to garlicky mushrooms, each paired with a different local wine. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable, happy to share their recommendations and insights into the local wines.

I particularly enjoyed the setas al ajillo (garlic mushrooms) and the tuna tataki, while Hans raved about the charcuterie platter. It was the perfect way to end our first day in Ronda, savoring the local flavors and soaking in the convivial atmosphere. I learned that Entre Vinos is a local favorite, known for its authentic atmosphere and selection of Ronda wines.
Dinner at Tragatá | Benito Gómez | Ronda
For dinner, we had reservations at Tragatá | Benito Gómez | Ronda, a restaurant that had been highly recommended for its innovative cuisine. The restaurant has a modern interior and a lively atmosphere. We decided to try the tasting menu, and it was an experience to remember. Each dish was a work of art, a fusion of flavors and textures that delighted the senses. From the salmon kimchi served on a lime to the tripe stew, each course was a surprise and a delight.

The service was impeccable, and the staff was passionate about the food they were serving. It was clear that Chef Benito Gómez is a culinary genius, pushing the boundaries of traditional Spanish cuisine. Hans and I agreed that this was one of the best meals we've had in a long time. Tragatá seems to be a popular spot, known for its fusion tapas and creative dishes.
Reflections on the Day
As we walked back to our hotel, the streets of Ronda were quiet and peaceful. The moon cast a soft glow on the white-washed buildings, creating a magical ambiance. I couldn't help but feel grateful for this incredible day. We had explored the heart of Ronda, experienced its history, and savored its culinary delights. I was also aware that today, May 10, 2025, is the day of La Legion 101 de Ronda, a mountain bike cycling event. While we didn't participate, it added to the vibrant atmosphere of the town.
Tomorrow, we plan to delve deeper into Ronda's cultural side, visiting the Museo Lara and the Casa Museo Don Bosco. I'm also excited to explore the Jardines De Cuenca, which promise even more stunning views of the El Tajo gorge. And, of course, we'll be on the lookout for more delicious food and local experiences. I am particularly interested in visiting Artesanía Medina to pick up some local crafts. I’m also excited about the prospect of witnessing the Procesión Virgen de la Paz tomorrow, a local religious event. Ronda has completely captured my heart, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings!
