Exploring the Hidden Gems of Friuli-Venezia Giulia
Day 4: A Day of Serenity and Shopping in the Heart of Friuli
Discovering the beauty of Aquileia's basilica, the natural wonder of Tagliamento river, and the excitement of Città Fiera.
Sacred Spaces and Retail Therapy
Today was a delightful mix of historical exploration and modern indulgence here in Friuli-Venezia Giulia. Hans and I set out to experience the region's rich cultural heritage, followed by a little retail therapy. It's amazing how much history and contemporary life intertwine here, creating such a unique travel experience.
Our day began in Aquileia, a town steeped in history, where we visited the magnificent Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta. As we approached, the Basilica's Romanesque-Gothic facade was truly impressive. The basilica dates back to the fourth century, with the current structure built in the eleventh century. Inside, the mosaic pavement from the 4th century was breathtaking. The artistry and preservation of these ancient mosaics were incredible. I found myself imagining the countless feet that had walked across these very stones centuries ago. The wooden ceiling, dating back to 1526, added another layer of historical depth to the space. The soft light filtering through the windows created a serene atmosphere, perfect for contemplation and reflection. Hans, ever the history buff, was captivated by the story of St. Hermagoras, the first bishop of the city, whose life is depicted in the frescoes within the Crypt. It was truly a spiritual experience. The Basilica is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and it's easy to see why. It is a treasure trove of art, history and faith.

The beauty of a place is not just in what you see, but in what it makes you feel.
After soaking in the spiritual ambiance of the Basilica, we drove towards the Tagliamento River. This river is renowned as one of the last morphologically intact rivers in the Alps, a true testament to nature's resilience. The Tagliamento stretches 178 km, creating a corridor from the Dolomite Mountains to the Adriatic Sea. As we approached the river, the vast riverbed with its numerous water channels was a breathtaking sight. The crystal-clear water and the surrounding lush greenery created a scene of unparalleled natural beauty. We decided to take a leisurely walk along the riverbank, enjoying the sounds of the water and the fresh air. The Tagliamento is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, offering opportunities for canoeing, rafting, and even hang gliding. Although we didn't partake in any water sports today, we watched kayakers paddle along the river. The Tagliamento is also a favourite spot for fishing, with locals casting their lines in hopes of catching trout and other freshwater fish. The river is home to a diverse ecosystem, supporting a wide array of plant and animal species. I was particularly fascinated by the various bird species we spotted along the riverbank, from herons to kingfishers. The Tagliamento is not just a river; it's a lifeline, supporting countless communities and ecosystems along its course.

Following our nature immersion, we decided to indulge in a little retail therapy at Città Fiera, a large shopping center in Martignacco. After a morning of historical and natural exploration, the vibrant atmosphere of Città Fiera was a welcome change of pace. We strolled through the various shops, browsing the latest fashion trends and local products. I was particularly impressed by the range of Italian designer brands available, showcasing the country's reputation for style and craftsmanship. Hans, on the other hand, was more interested in the electronics stores, always on the lookout for the latest gadgets and tech innovations. We stopped for a coffee break at one of the many cafes, savoring a delicious cappuccino and a pastry. It was a perfect opportunity to relax and recharge before continuing our shopping spree. I picked up a few souvenirs for friends and family back in Berlin, while Hans treated himself to a new watch. Città Fiera is more than just a shopping center; it's a social hub, bringing together people from all walks of life. The energy and excitement were palpable, making it a fun and memorable experience.

For breakfast, we enjoyed a delightful meal at Al Tirassegno. The B&B Tirassegno enjoys a location in Agnone, 21 miles from Lake Bomba and 31 miles from Roccaraso – Rivisondoli. Both free Wifi and private parking are accessible at the bed and breakfast free of charge. The reviews online raved about the cleanliness and warm welcome. For lunch, we chose Alla Frasca, a restaurant recommended for its authentic Friulian cuisine. The reviews I read mentioned the fresh seafood and homemade pasta, so I was eager to try it out. Alla Frasca is known for its charming atmosphere and friendly service, making it a popular spot for both locals and tourists. And for dinner, we have reservations at Antica Osteria Al Ponte. This restaurant is highly recommended for its traditional Friulian dishes and extensive wine list. I'm looking forward to trying some local specialties and pairing them with regional wines. Antica Osteria Al Ponte is known for its cozy ambiance and attentive service, promising a memorable dining experience.
As I reflect on today's experiences, I'm struck by the diversity and beauty of Friuli-Venezia Giulia. From the ancient mosaics of Aquileia to the natural wonder of the Tagliamento River and the modern excitement of Città Fiera, this region offers something for everyone. And tomorrow, we are off to Trieste to explore the Unity of Italy Square and the Museum Of The Great War. I’m excited to discover more hidden gems in this beautiful corner of Italy.
