A Day of Discovery in Tilcara

Today was all about embracing Tilcara from different perspectives – both literally and figuratively. From the panoramic views atop Cerro de la Cruz to the artistic expressions within the Ernesto Soto Avendaño Museum, it was a day that fed both my soul and my senses. I woke up with that familiar buzz of excitement, eager to see what new wonders this little town held.

My day started with a hearty breakfast at Killa Resto Bar. I was keen to try some local flavors before embarking on my morning hike. The atmosphere was cozy, perfect for fueling up before an adventure. After breakfast, I set off towards Cerro de la Cruz. The trail began near the main bridge over the Huasamayo River. As I started my ascent, I could already feel the altitude making each step a little more challenging, but the anticipation of the view kept me going. The path wound its way up, offering glimpses of Tilcara getting smaller and smaller below. It was a steady climb, and I made sure to take plenty of breaks to catch my breath and soak in the scenery.

Reaching the summit of Cerro de la Cruz was incredibly rewarding. The panoramic views of Tilcara and the surrounding landscapes were simply breathtaking. The town looked like a miniature village nestled in the valley, with the vibrant colors of the mountains providing a stunning backdrop. I spent a good amount of time at the top, just taking it all in and capturing as many photos as possible. The wind was strong, but the feeling of accomplishment and the sheer beauty of the vista made it all worthwhile. I even ran into a few other travelers, and we shared stories and tips about our adventures in Argentina.

After descending from Cerro de la Cruz, I made my way to the Ernesto Soto Avendaño Museum. Located in a historic building near the central plaza, the museum is dedicated to the works of the sculptor Ernesto Soto Avendaño, who created the Monument to Independence in Humahuaca. The building itself has historical significance, as it once belonged to Colonel Don Manuel Álvarez Prado, a hero of the Argentine War of Independence. It was fascinating to learn about the history of the building and its connection to such an important figure.

Inside, the museum showcased a collection of Soto Avendaño's original plaster works, offering a glimpse into his creative process. I was particularly impressed by the intricate details and the emotion captured in each sculpture. The museum also featured exhibits related to Colonel Álvarez Prado, including personal belongings and historical artifacts. It was a poignant reminder of the rich history and cultural heritage of this region. I learned that just yesterday, the museum received the sword and military cap of Colonel Manuel Álvarez Prado, which will now be part of the museum's collection.

For lunch, I decided to try Restaurante EL HUMAHUAQUEÑO, known for its authentic regional cuisine. I opted for the menu of the day, which started with a comforting soup followed by a hearty beef stew. It was exactly what I needed after a morning of hiking and exploring. The flavors were rich and satisfying, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. It felt like stepping into someone's home for a delicious, home-cooked meal. I overheard some other diners raving about the empanadas, so I made a mental note to try them next time.

In the late afternoon, I explored the town a bit more, soaking in the local atmosphere and browsing the artisan shops. I couldn't resist picking up a few souvenirs to remind me of my time in Tilcara. As the sun began to set, I headed to Viejo Olivo, Bar de Vinos y Tapas for a relaxing evening. The bar had a cozy and inviting ambiance, with a great selection of local wines and delicious tapas. I sampled a few different wines, each with its own unique character and flavor. The tapas were equally delightful, offering a taste of the regional cuisine. It was the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploring.

Dinner was at La Damajuana Restobar, a place recommended for its ambiance and regional dishes. It seems this place is permanently closed, which is a shame because I was looking forward to trying their empanadas de quinoa and papines andinos with goat cheese. Instead, I decided to revisit Restaurante EL HUMAHUAQUEÑO for some empanadas, which I had heard so much about during lunch. They did not disappoint!

As I reflect on today's adventures, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience the beauty and culture of Tilcara.
