Valley Views and Family Vines
Today was a day of embracing the sheer beauty and intimate charm that the Douro Valley offers. From panoramic viewpoints that stretch the imagination to family-run vineyards brimming with character, it was an experience that truly captured the heart of this wine region. It's days like these that remind me why I traded the familiar streets of Berlin for the winding roads of the Douro.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Barris Do Douro Restaurante. The restaurant is located in Vila Nova de Gaia, and while it wasn't in the Douro Valley itself, I wanted to start my day with a view of the Douro River before heading out to the valley. I enjoyed a traditional Portuguese breakfast, complete with strong coffee and *pastel de nata*, while watching the early morning bustle along the riverfront. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration.

The first stop on today's itinerary was the Miradouro de Valença do Douro. The drive there was an experience in itself, with the road twisting and turning through the terraced vineyards. As I climbed higher, the views became more and more spectacular. When I finally reached the *miradouro*, I was completely blown away. The Douro River snaked its way through the valley below, with the vineyards cascading down the hillsides like giant green staircases. I spent a good hour there, simply soaking in the view and snapping photos. It was one of those moments where I felt incredibly grateful for the opportunity to travel and experience such beauty.

The best view comes after the hardest climb.
After leaving the viewpoint, I made my way to Quinta do Jalloto - Family vineyards. This was an experience I had been particularly looking forward to, as I'm always drawn to the personal touch that family-run businesses offer. As I drove up to the quinta, I was immediately struck by its idyllic setting. The vineyards were perched on a hillside, with stunning views stretching out in every direction. The quinta itself was a charming, traditional building, with a welcoming atmosphere. I was greeted by one of the family members, who gave me a tour of the vineyards and winery, explaining the history of the quinta and the winemaking process. It was fascinating to hear about the family's passion for their craft and their commitment to producing high-quality wines.

The tour culminated in a wine tasting, where I sampled a selection of the quinta's wines. Each wine was unique, with its own distinct character and flavor profile. I particularly enjoyed the Grande Reserva, a full-bodied red with rich, complex flavors. As I sipped the wine, I chatted with the family member about the challenges and rewards of running a small vineyard in the Douro Valley. It was clear that this was more than just a business to them; it was a way of life.
For lunch, I headed to Castas e Pratos in Peso da Régua. I decided to try the *arroz malandrinho* (wet rice) with fish and prawns. It was a flavorful and comforting dish that perfectly complemented the Douro wines I had sampled earlier in the day. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere and friendly staff, making it a perfect spot to relax and refuel.

In the late afternoon, I decided to indulge in some local culture at Lado Wines - Porto & Douro Wine bar & Tastings by AVEPOD. Although technically located back in Vila Nova de Gaia, I couldn't resist the opportunity to explore a wine bar dedicated to small producers, especially those focusing on Port wine. It was a delightful experience, as I sampled a variety of Ports from lesser-known producers. The staff was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate, providing insights into the nuances of each wine.

As the sun began to set, I made my way to Casa do Arco by Douro Exclusive for dinner. Located in São Cristovão do Douro, this restaurant offered a unique dining experience with a focus on traditional Portuguese cuisine. I opted for the *bacalhau a baixa temperatura com puré de grão-de-bico e coli de pimento* (cod at low temperature with chickpea puree and pepper coulis). The flavors were exquisite, and the presentation was impeccable. The restaurant's ambiance was intimate and refined, making it a perfect way to end a day of exploration.

Reflecting on the day, I realized how much I appreciate the slower pace of life in the Douro Valley. It's a place where you can truly disconnect from the hustle and bustle of modern life and reconnect with nature, culture, and the simple pleasures of good food and wine. As I prepare for my final day in the Douro Valley, I'm already filled with a sense of nostalgia. Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Douro Promenade for a final view of the valley and explore Quinta Nova Nossa Senhora do Carmo, hoping to capture a few more memories before heading back to Berlin. I'll also be sure to stop by Aneto Wines to pick up a few bottles to take home, a small piece of the Douro to remind me of this incredible adventure.
The experiences of today have reinforced my passion for sustainable travel and cultural immersion. It's not just about seeing the sights; it's about connecting with the people, understanding their traditions, and appreciating the beauty of the natural world. And as I continue my journey, I'll carry these lessons with me, always seeking out authentic experiences that enrich my life and broaden my perspective.
Explore the enchanting Douro Valley solo, savoring world-class wines and captivating landscapes in a serene 11-day adventure.
