A Day of Discoveries
Today was a day of simple pleasures and breathtaking sights. After nearly a week immersed in the Douro Valley, I'm finding a rhythm, a comfortable pace that allows me to soak in every moment. It's amazing how quickly a place can feel like home, even when you're exploring it solo.
My day began with a leisurely breakfast at Ruby Douro Cafe and Restaurant in Ervedosa do Douro. It was a quaint spot, the kind where locals gather, and the aroma of fresh coffee filled the air. I savored a traditional Portuguese pastry, its sweetness a perfect start to the day. Fuelled and ready, I set off to explore the Douro’s famed landscapes.

The first stop was Quinta do Pôpa, a winery that had been recommended by several locals. The drive there was stunning, winding roads carving through terraced vineyards, each turn revealing a more picturesque view than the last. Arriving at the Quinta, I was immediately struck by its charm. The Pôpa family has clearly poured their heart and soul into this place, and it shows in every detail, from the meticulously maintained vines to the warm, inviting tasting room.

I opted for a guided tour, eager to learn about their winemaking process. Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable, sharing stories of the family's history and their commitment to sustainable practices. We wandered through the vineyards, the air filled with the sweet scent of ripening grapes. I learned about the unique terroir of the Douro Valley, the combination of soil, climate, and topography that gives the wines their distinctive character.
The tasting, of course, was the highlight. I sampled a range of their wines, from crisp whites to robust reds, each one a testament to the Pôpa family's skill and passion. I found myself particularly drawn to their Pôpa Selection red. As I swirled and sipped, I couldn't help but think of Hans back in Berlin. He would have loved this place; we would have loved this place together. I made a mental note to bring back a bottle (or two) for us to share.
Sometimes, the most profound experiences are the ones you stumble upon unexpectedly, the hidden gems that reveal themselves when you least expect it.
Leaving Quinta do Pôpa, I felt a sense of contentment. It wasn't just the wine; it was the whole experience – the beauty of the vineyards, the warmth of the people, the feeling of connection to something larger than myself. I set off toward the Viewpoint Sebolido, eager to capture the landscape from a different perspective. The drive was an adventure in itself, the roads narrow and winding, clinging to the hillsides. I even had to pull over once to let a flock of sheep cross the road, their bells tinkling in the afternoon sun.

Finally, I reached the viewpoint, and the view was nothing short of spectacular. The Douro River snaked through the valley below, a ribbon of blue against the green and gold of the vineyards. I spent a good hour there, simply soaking it all in. It was a moment of perfect serenity, a reminder of the beauty that exists in the world, and the importance of taking the time to appreciate it.
As the afternoon wore on, I decided to explore a local shop I'd spotted earlier, Douro Cycles. I am not a cyclist myself, but I was curious to see what it was all about. I ended up chatting with the owner for quite a while. He was incredibly passionate about cycling and the Douro Valley, and he shared some great tips about hidden gems in the area. He was also very keen on sustainability, and told me about a variety of cycling tours in the area.

For dinner, I headed to Restaurante Vila Douro Régua, drawn in by its reputation for traditional Portuguese cuisine. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with a warm, rustic ambiance. I ordered a seafood dish, eager to taste the flavors of the region. It was delicious, the seafood fresh and flavorful, the spices perfectly balanced. As I savored each bite, I reflected on the day. It had been a day of simple pleasures, of unexpected discoveries, of moments of quiet joy. It was exactly the kind of day I had hoped for on this solo adventure.

As I sit here now, writing this in my travel journal, I can't help but feel grateful. Grateful for the opportunity to explore this beautiful region, grateful for the kindness of the people I've met along the way, and grateful for the chance to reconnect with myself. Solo travel isn't always easy, but it's incredibly rewarding. It pushes you outside of your comfort zone, forces you to rely on yourself, and opens you up to new experiences and perspectives. I feel more alive, more present, more connected to the world than I have in a long time.
Tomorrow, I plan to visit Miradouro de Valença do Douro and Quinta do Jalloto - Family vineyards. I'm also looking forward to trying Barris Do Douro Restaurante for breakfast, Castas e Pratos for lunch, and Casa do Arco by Douro Exclusive for dinner. And maybe, just maybe, I'll find time to stop by Lado Wines - Porto & Douro Wine bar & Tastings by AVEPOD for a nightcap. It's all about balance, right?
Until tomorrow,
Jessica
P.S. I really need to remember to buy an adapter. My phone is nearly out of battery!
P.P.S. I saw the most beautiful sunset tonight. The sky was ablaze with color, painting the vineyards in hues of orange, pink, and gold. It was a moment I'll never forget. I wish Hans could have seen it with me.
P.P.P.S. I am starting to think about what I will do when I get back to Berlin. It will be good to see Hans again and to be back in my own home, but I have to admit that I am starting to feel a little sad that this trip is coming to an end. I will definitely be back to the Douro Valley again, and next time I will bring Hans with me.
P.P.P.P.S. I just remembered that I forgot to pack a light jacket. It is getting quite chilly in the evenings here!
