Day 1: A Taste of Tranquility: Discovering the Douro Valley's Hidden Gems
Immerse yourself in the Douro Valley's serene beauty, savor exquisite wines, and explore breathtaking landscapes on a solo adventure.
First Day's Charm
The journey to the Douro Valley was everything I had hoped for and more. Leaving behind the hustle of Berlin for the tranquil landscapes of Portugal was exactly the change of pace I needed. Today was all about immersing myself in the natural beauty and rich flavors of this renowned wine region, and it certainly didn't disappoint.
My day began with a delightful breakfast at The River. The restaurant lived up to its name, offering stunning views of the Douro River as I enjoyed a traditional Portuguese breakfast. I opted for the 'Douro' soup, a hearty mix of turnip sprouts, beans, and blood sausage – a truly authentic start to my culinary exploration of the region. Sipping my coffee while watching the river flow gently by, I felt a sense of peace wash over me. It was the perfect way to set the tone for my solo adventure.

Next on the agenda was a visit to Parque Natural do Douro Internacional. As someone who appreciates sustainable travel, I was eager to explore this protected area. The park stretches along the Douro River, forming the border between Portugal and Spain. The rugged landscapes, deep river valleys, and rocky outcrops were breathtaking. I spent hours hiking along the trails, taking in the panoramic views and observing the local flora and fauna. It was a welcome escape from city life, and I felt a deep connection with nature.

The best view comes after the hardest climb.
After working up an appetite in the park, I headed to A Companhia - Museu do Douro for lunch. The restaurant is part of the Douro Museum, housed in a historic building that once regulated the Douro wine trade. I decided to try the buffet, which offered a variety of local dishes. The food was delicious, and the ambiance was perfect. The friendly staff made me feel right at home, and I even got a complimentary glass of port wine at the end of my meal. It was a lovely touch that added to the overall experience.

In the afternoon, I visited Quinta do Bomfim, a renowned wine estate managed by the Symington family for five generations. As I approached the Quinta, I was immediately struck by the beauty of the vineyards, cascading down the hills towards the river. The air was filled with the sweet scent of grapes, and the sun was shining brightly, casting a golden glow over the landscape.

The tour began in a small museum, which told the story of the property, the family, and the wines. I learned about the history of port production in the Douro Valley and the Symington family's role in shaping it. There were old photographs and documents that recorded the history of the estate and the region. It was fascinating to see how much things had changed over the years, and I felt a deep appreciation for the traditions that have been passed down through generations.
Next, we embarked on a walk through the vineyards. The guide explained the different grape varieties grown at Quinta do Bomfim and the unique characteristics of the terroir. I was impressed by the dry stone terraces, built by hand in the 18th and 19th centuries. It was a testament to the hard work and dedication of the people who have cultivated these lands for centuries.
The highlight of the tour was the old cellar, built in 1896. It was one of the most magnificent structures I had ever seen, with a complex roof structure and rows upon rows of oak barrels. The cellar has been used for over a hundred years to hold the ports from each harvest before they are taken downriver to Vila Nova de Gaia for further maturing. The air was cool and damp, and the scent of aging wine filled my nostrils. It was a truly sensory experience that transported me back in time.
Of course, no visit to Quinta do Bomfim would be complete without a tasting of their famous port wines. We sampled three different varieties, each with its own unique flavor profile. The guide explained how to properly taste and appreciate port wine, and I learned about the different styles and aging processes. It was a delightful experience that deepened my appreciation for this iconic Portuguese beverage.
Before dinner, I made a stop at Douro Gourmet, a charming shop in Peso da Régua. I wanted to pick up some local products to take back to Berlin. The shop offered a curated selection of wines, artisanal goods, and unique souvenirs. I purchased a bottle of fine Douro wine, some handcrafted ceramics, and a few traditional Portuguese delicacies. The knowledgeable staff helped me find the perfect mementos to cherish my memories of the Douro Valley.

For dinner, I chose Castas e Pratos, a restaurant occupying a part of the old Régua train station. The space was divided into a wine bar, lounge, gourmet delicatessen, and wine shop, with a beautiful fireplace and an enormous table where guests could enjoy an aperitif. I started with a glass of local red wine, followed by a delicious meal of traditional Portuguese cuisine with a modern twist. The restaurant is known for its vast wine cellar, specializing in Douro wines, so I knew I was in for a treat. The ambiance was warm and inviting, and it was the perfect way to end my first day in the Douro Valley.

The Douro Valley has exceeded my expectations, and I am excited to see what tomorrow brings. Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Miradouro Casal De Loivos for panoramic views and explore Quinta da Foz. I might even treat myself to a drink at In Douro Bar in the evening. For now, it's time to rest and recharge for another day of adventure. Good night from the Douro Valley!
