Today was all about soaking in the breathtaking beauty of the Douro Valley and treating myself to some incredible food. As a freelance writer, I often work from home in Berlin, so escaping to a place with such stunning natural beauty is a welcome change of pace. It’s amazing how a change of scenery can spark creativity and refresh the soul.



My day began with a hearty breakfast at Tasca da Quinta in Peso da Régua. This cozy spot is known for its authentic Portuguese tapas, and it certainly didn't disappoint. The owner was incredibly welcoming, and I loved trying local specialties like the octopus salad and the sardine omelette. It felt like stepping into someone's home, which is exactly the kind of experience I love when traveling.

Fueled up and ready to explore, I headed to Miradouro Casal De Loivos. The drive itself was an adventure, winding through narrow roads lined with vineyards. I spent a good hour just taking it all in, snapping photos, and jotting down notes in my travel journal. It's moments like these that remind me why I love to travel solo – the freedom to linger and fully immerse myself in the experience. I could see Pinhão nestled below, looking quaint and inviting. I made a mental note to explore it tomorrow; it's on the itinerary after all. The BBC once declared the views from this spot to be among the best in the world, and I can certainly see why.

The wines were exceptional, especially the dry reds, which paired perfectly with the stunning vineyard views. The guide was incredibly knowledgeable, sharing insights into the region's winemaking heritage and the unique characteristics of each wine. I even got to sample their extra virgin olive oil, which was a delightful surprise.

After the wine tasting, I was ready for a culinary adventure. I had made a reservation at DOC - Chef Rui Paula, a restaurant known for its innovative Portuguese cuisine. The setting was stunning, with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Douro River. The tasting menu was a revelation, each dish a work of art that showcased the region's best ingredients. From the scarlet shrimp to the perfectly prepared lamb, every bite was an explosion of flavor. The service was impeccable, and the sommelier expertly paired each course with a local wine. It was definitely a splurge, but worth every penny.

As the sun began to set, I made my way to In Douro Bar for a nightcap. This trendy spot had a great vibe, with locals and tourists mingling over cocktails and local wines. I struck up a conversation with a couple from Porto who were visiting the Douro Valley for the weekend. They shared some recommendations for my upcoming days in the region, which I eagerly added to my list. It's always great to connect with locals and get their perspective on the best things to see and do.

For dinner, I decided to try Douro Velho in Vila Nova de Gaia. The restaurant had a romantic atmosphere, and I enjoyed sitting on the terrace, taking in the views of the Douro River. The food was good, but after the incredible lunch at DOC, it was hard to compare. Still, it was a pleasant way to end the day.

Reflecting on the day, I feel incredibly grateful for the opportunity to explore this beautiful region. The Douro Valley has a way of captivating you with its stunning landscapes, rich history, and warm hospitality. As much as I love Berlin, there’s something truly special about escaping to a place like this, where you can slow down, reconnect with nature, and indulge in the simple pleasures of life. I am looking forward to tomorrow, when I plan to explore Pinhão Douro Vinhateiro and Quinta do Panascal - Fonseca Porto. I’m also excited to visit Kopke Wine House, as I am hoping to bring back a bottle or two for Hans. He always appreciates a good Portuguese wine, and it will be a nice reminder of my solo adventure.



And speaking of adventures, I really should remember to buy an adapter. My phone is almost out of battery, and I completely forgot to pack one. Note to self: always double-check the essentials!
