Chasing Waterfalls and Natural Thrills in Chapada Diamantina
Today was nothing short of spectacular, a true immersion into the heart of Chapada Diamantina's natural wonders. From the misty heights of Cachoeira da Fumaça to the exhilarating natural slide at Ribeirão do Meio, it was a day filled with breathtaking views and playful adventures. It’s moments like these that remind me why I traded the familiar comforts of Bamberg for the open road, camera in hand, ready to capture the world's hidden gems.
The morning started early, as I was eager to make the most of the day. After a quick breakfast, I set off towards Cachoeira da Fumaça, Brazil's second-highest waterfall. The drive itself was an experience, the landscape transforming with every turn, showcasing the raw beauty of Bahia. The closer I got to Vale do Capão, the starting point for the Fumaça trail, the more my excitement grew.
The hike to the top of Cachoeira da Fumaça is no walk in the park; it’s a good 6-kilometer trek each way. The initial ascent was definitely a challenge, demanding a good level of fitness and a decent pair of hiking boots – I was thankful I remembered to pack mine! As I climbed, the views became increasingly rewarding, offering panoramic vistas of the Chapada Diamantina's vast plateaus and verdant valleys. The air was crisp and clean, filled with the scent of wildflowers and the earthy aroma of the surrounding vegetation.
Reaching the top of Cachoeira da Fumaça was an awe-inspiring moment. The sheer scale of the waterfall is humbling, with water cascading down from a height of 340 meters. The wind was strong, creating a misty spray that enveloped the area, giving the waterfall its name – Smoke Falls. I spent a good hour simply sitting there, mesmerized by the power and beauty of nature. I tried to capture the scene with my camera, hoping to convey the grandeur of the falls to those who couldn't be there in person. It's a challenge, though; some scenes just need to be experienced firsthand.

Nature is not a place to visit. It is home.
After soaking in the majesty of Cachoeira da Fumaça, I made my way back down the trail, my legs a little weary but my spirit soaring. It was time for the afternoon's adventure: Ribeirão do Meio, a natural water slide not far from Lençóis.
The hike to Ribeirão do Meio was much easier than the morning's trek, a pleasant 3.5-kilometer walk from the center of Lençóis. The trail wound through lush vegetation, crossing small streams and offering glimpses of the surrounding hills. As I approached Ribeirão do Meio, I could hear the sounds of laughter and splashing, a sure sign that I was in for some fun.
Ribeirão do Meio is essentially a natural rock slide formed by the Ribeirão River. Over time, the water has carved a smooth channel in the rock, creating a thrilling ride into a clear, refreshing pool. I watched as locals and tourists alike took turns sliding down, their faces beaming with joy. I couldn't resist joining in, of course! The water was cool and invigorating, and the slide was surprisingly fast. It was pure, unadulterated fun, the kind that makes you feel like a kid again.

I spent a couple of hours at Ribeirão do Meio, swimming, sliding, and soaking up the sun. The atmosphere was lively and festive, with people sharing stories and laughter. It was a wonderful reminder of the simple pleasures in life: good company, beautiful surroundings, and a healthy dose of adventure. I even ran into a group of kids practicing capoeira nearby. It was amazing to watch their athletic moves and feel the vibrant energy of the local culture.
Lunch today was a simple affair, enjoyed amidst the stunning scenery of Chapada Diamantina National Park. I packed a few sandwiches and some fruit, finding a quiet spot to sit and savor both the food and the view. It's amazing how much more satisfying a meal can be when enjoyed in nature's embrace.

Before heading back to my accommodation, I made a quick stop at Empório Chapada Diamantina. I had heard great things about this local shop, known for its curated selection of regional products. I wanted to pick up a few souvenirs for Hans and Liesel, something to remind them of my adventures in Bahia. The shop was indeed a treasure trove of local crafts, organic foods, and unique gifts. I ended up buying some aromatic soaps made in Vale do Capão, some locally grown coffee from Piatã, and a couple of Chapada Diamantina-themed t-shirts for my family. It's always a pleasure to support local businesses and share their creations with loved ones.

As I drove back, the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the landscape. I reflected on the day's adventures, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience the natural wonders of Chapada Diamantina. It was a day of contrasts, from the challenging hike to Cachoeira da Fumaça to the playful fun at Ribeirão do Meio, but both experiences were equally rewarding.
Tomorrow, I'm planning to visit Poço Azul and Salão das Areias Coloridas. I've heard that Poço Azul is an incredible cave with crystal-clear blue water, perfect for swimming and snorkeling. Salão das Areias Coloridas, on the other hand, is known for its stunning rock formations with vibrant hues. I am also looking forward to dinner at Restaurante Sabor da Serra. It sounds like another day filled with natural beauty and unforgettable experiences. I can't wait to see what Chapada Diamantina has in store for me next!
Back at my lodging, I made sure to apply some after-sun lotion, as I had forgotten to pack sunscreen. I also made a mental note to recharge my portable charger, as my phone battery was running low after a day of taking photos and videos. These little travel mishaps are all part of the adventure, though. They remind me to be more prepared and resourceful, and they often lead to unexpected discoveries and encounters.
As I sit here writing this, I can hear the sounds of the Brazilian night – crickets chirping, distant music, and the occasional burst of laughter. It's a comforting soundtrack, a reminder that I'm far from home but also connected to something larger than myself. Travel has a way of doing that, of expanding your horizons and deepening your understanding of the world. And as I drift off to sleep, I can't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to explore, to learn, and to share my experiences with all of you.
Until tomorrow, dear readers. Keep exploring, keep dreaming, and keep embracing the beauty that surrounds us.
