Florence's Embrace: Art, History, and Rooftop Views

Today was everything I imagined Florence to be – a whirlwind of art, history, and culinary delights. It’s days like these that remind me why I love sharing my travel experiences, especially with my family. Every corner turned revealed another breathtaking view or historical treasure, making it a truly unforgettable day.

Our Florentine adventure began with a delightful breakfast at Caffè Gilli. This historic café, established way back in 1733, exudes old-world charm. The elegant, Liberty-style room was a feast for the eyes, and the aroma of freshly brewed coffee filled the air. I opted for a classic cappuccino, while Hans enjoyed an espresso, and Liesel devoured a pastry. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration. I remember when I was a student, places like this seemed intimidating, but now I appreciate the history and elegance they offer.

With our appetites satisfied, we ventured towards the Uffizi Gallery. I had pre-booked tickets, thankfully, as the line stretched around the block even in January. The brisk morning air, hovering around 7°C, made me grateful for my warm coat and scarf. January in Florence is cool, with average temperatures between 2°C and 10.9°C, so layers are essential. The sky was mostly cloudy, but that didn't dampen our spirits.

Stepping inside the Uffizi was like entering another world. The sheer volume of art was overwhelming, but in the best way possible. We spent hours wandering through the halls, marveling at masterpieces by Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and Botticelli. Liesel was particularly captivated by Botticelli's “Birth of Venus,” and I found myself drawn to the intricate details of Leonardo's works. It's amazing how these artworks, created centuries ago, still resonate with us today. The Uffizi is open from 8:15 am to 6:30 pm, and I highly recommend arriving early to beat the crowds, or visiting around lunchtime when it tends to be less busy.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.

After immersing ourselves in art, we emerged into the bustling Piazza della Signoria. The square was alive with activity, even in the off-season. The imposing Palazzo Vecchio stood proudly, its tower reaching towards the sky. We admired the Fountain of Neptune and the replica of Michelangelo's David, trying to imagine what it must have been like during the Renaissance. The square is steeped in history, and I could almost feel the echoes of the past. We learned that on January 6th, Florence celebrates the Epiphany with a historical reenactment that passes through Piazza della Signoria, which I would have loved to see.

Next, we explored Palazzo Vecchio, Florence's town hall. The palace is a treasure trove of art and history, with opulent rooms and stunning frescoes. We climbed the Arnolfo Tower for panoramic views of the city, and it was worth every step. From above, Florence looked like a painting, with its terracotta rooftops and winding streets. Liesel was fascinated by the secret passages and hidden chambers, imagining what it must have been like to live in such a grand palace. The Palazzo Vecchio is open from 9 am to 7 pm, except on Thursdays when it closes earlier, and it's a must-see for any visitor to Florence.

Lunch was a culinary experience at Ristorante Santa Elisabetta, a Michelin-starred restaurant located in a Byzantine tower. The setting was intimate, with only a few tables, and the service was impeccable. I opted for the tasting menu, which featured innovative Mediterranean cuisine with a focus on seafood. Hans enjoyed a traditional Florentine steak, and Liesel savored a pasta dish. The flavors were exquisite, and each course was a work of art. This restaurant truly respects nature and the seasons, and I appreciated the emphasis on fresh, local ingredients. I learned that they offer a 3-course lunch tasting menu called “Carte Blanche”, which I think would be perfect for our next visit.

As the afternoon waned, we strolled along the Arno River, admiring the Ponte Vecchio. The shops lining the bridge were a tempting distraction, but we resisted the urge to splurge, knowing we had a full day of shopping planned for tomorrow. We're planning on heading to Florence Leather, as Liesel is hoping to find a nice purse there. The sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the city. The temperature was dropping, so we decided to seek refuge in a cozy bar.

Our evening culminated at the Loggia Roof Bar, perched atop the Hotel Palazzo Guadagni. This rooftop bar offered breathtaking views of Florence, and we sipped on Aperol spritzes as we watched the sunset. The atmosphere was relaxed and romantic, and it was the perfect way to end our day. Liesel enjoyed a non-alcoholic cocktail, feeling very grown-up. The Loggia Roof Bar is known for its great service and friendly staff, and it's a popular spot for both locals and tourists. The Loggia Roof Bar is built from the loggia on the top floor of the building and is the pride of Hotel Palazzo Guadagni. It has magnificent views of both the Bellosguardo Tower, the Boboli Gardens and the Church of Santo Spirito.

Dinner was a delightful affair at Osteria da Caterina, a charming restaurant recommended by a local. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, and the menu featured traditional Florentine dishes. I opted for the osso buco, while Hans enjoyed the ribollita, a hearty vegetable soup. Liesel devoured a plate of spaghetti carbonara. The food was delicious, and the service was warm and friendly. It was the perfect way to experience authentic Florentine cuisine.

As we walked back to our hotel, the city was bathed in a soft, golden light. The sounds of laughter and music filled the air, and I felt a sense of contentment wash over me. Florence had captured my heart, and I knew this was just the beginning of our adventure. I am already looking forward to tomorrow, when we will be exploring the Boboli Gardens, Pitti Palace, and Ponte Vecchio.

Tomorrow promises another day of exploration, with visits to the Boboli Gardens and the Pitti Palace planned. I'm particularly excited to see the Boboli Gardens, as I've heard they are stunning. We'll also be crossing the Ponte Vecchio again, this time perhaps stopping to admire the jewelry shops.

Back at Il Terrazzino Sulla Cattedrale, I couldn't help but reflect on the day. It’s moments like these, sharing experiences with my family, that truly matter. Florence is more than just a city; it's a living, breathing museum, a testament to human creativity and ingenuity. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings. For now, though, it’s time to rest and recharge for another day of Florentine adventures. Goodnight from Florence!
