Whispers of Giants and Basalt Towers

Today was a day of dramatic coastlines, mythical encounters, and embracing the raw beauty of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. With Pieter by my side, I set out to explore the area around Arnarstapi, a place where the land meets the sea in the most spectacular fashion, and where the echoes of Icelandic sagas still resonate. It was a day that reminded me why I fell in love with Iceland in the first place – a place where nature's grandeur and rich folklore intertwine.

Our morning began with a hearty breakfast at FRISTA Food Truck in Arnarstapi. I'd heard whispers about their legendary fish and chips, and let me tell you, they did not disappoint. There's something truly special about enjoying perfectly crispy fish with a side of golden fries, all while overlooking the rugged coastline. Pieter opted for a quesadilla, which he devoured with equal enthusiasm. It was the perfect fuel for the day's adventures.

With our bellies full, we set off to Lóndrangar, those imposing basalt stacks that rise dramatically from the sea. As we approached, the sight was simply breathtaking. The stacks, remnants of an ancient volcanic crater, stood tall and proud against the backdrop of the North Atlantic. The sheer scale of these formations is humbling. They're often referred to as the rocky castle of Iceland, and it's easy to see why. I could almost imagine ancient trolls guarding the coastline, their stony figures blending seamlessly with the landscape. We spent a good hour just gazing at them, snapping photos, and soaking in the wild, untamed beauty.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the simplest moments – a shared meal, a breathtaking view, a quiet connection with nature.

Next, we drove back towards Arnarstapi and explored the Arnarstapi Cliff Viewpoint. The coastal walk between Hellnar and Arnarstapi is renowned for its stunning views, and it certainly lived up to the hype. The path meandered along the cliffs, offering panoramic vistas of the sea, the basalt columns, and the unique rock formations that define this coastline. The fresh sea air invigorated us as we walked, and the sound of the waves crashing against the rocks was a constant, soothing presence.

We paused frequently to take photos, marveling at the intricate patterns carved into the cliffs by centuries of wind and waves. The birdlife was also incredible. I spotted numerous Arctic terns nesting on the cliffs, their graceful flight adding to the scene's charm. I really wished I hadn't forgotten my binoculars, as they would have come in handy here. The walk was an easy one, about 2.5 kilometers each way, and it allowed us to fully appreciate the dramatic beauty of the Snæfellsnes coastline. We even saw Gatklettur, that iconic stone arch, with the waves crashing through it.

Our exploration of Arnarstapi wouldn't have been complete without paying homage to Bárður Snæfellsás, the mythical guardian of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. The statue of Bárður stands proudly near the coast, a towering figure holding a large rock, symbolizing his strength and connection to the earth. According to the Icelandic saga, Bárður was half-human, half-giant, and possessed immense strength and wisdom. He is said to have lived on the peninsula during the settlement period and is now considered a protector of the region. Standing before the statue, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe and respect for the rich folklore that permeates this land.

After a day of exploration, we decided to treat ourselves to dinner at Hótel Snaefellsnes. The hotel restaurant is known for its traditional Icelandic cuisine, with a focus on local and organic ingredients. Pieter opted for the lamb, while I decided to try the fresh catch of the day. Both dishes were delicious, showcasing the flavors of the region. The cozy atmosphere of the restaurant was the perfect setting to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures. We also enjoyed a couple of local beers, savoring the moment and the incredible journey so far.
